He tells the players to kick the ball into that big white rectangle with a net behind it before you can count to three.

Always Winnie why is Percy never remembered he made Winnie look happy

Often seen chatting to TF at side of pitch. Never remembered who he was. VIVA MÉXICO

I’d guess the club are happy to allow this as it brings different interpretations and ideas.

Freelancing no doubt. Not really a problem as it doesn't conflict with each party's interests or affect competition. Bees in the Premier league and Norwegian international side re very different.

Very true - just the same as eg Austin McPhee working for Hearts/FCM and NI, now assisting Dean Smith at Villa while filling a similar role with Scotland.

If nothing else, if a club was to prohibit this sort of "double-jobbing", it would risk losing him to some other club which does allow it.

Having a Norway international on the team may add another synergy too

Is it him enjoying the celebration during the play off final?

Fully agree, and he is probably very good at what he does. If he is adding value to what we already have, why not.

Not sure this is a new story at all but there's a piece here suggesting we're starting a recruitment program in Mexico run by Bernardo..

Another Mexican piece
Bernardo Cueva is part of the technical staff of Thomas Frank, Manager of Brentford. Currently, the London team works with three assistants, a goalkeeping coach and the physical trainer. The Mexican is the "tactical statistician", that is, the person who is focused on the stopped ball and the restarts of the game, a concept linked to the "four phases of the game". In other words, how a team behaves offensively and defensively once the ball leaves the field, from a goal kick to a throw-in. Soccer, from an analytical angle, is becoming more complex every day because it has many areas of study. All the time there is innovation.

According to this, Ch*lsea's after him now. I was able to read it but now it's asking me to create an account. Do I look that stupid? Anyway, I had the sense to C&P and then save it in my notes. ;-)

Brentford’s ‘tactical statistician’ on Chelsea radar for set-piece role

Chelsea have identified Brentford guru Bernardo Cueva as one of their targets to work in the club’s new set-piece department.

Telegraph Sport exclusively revealed last Friday that Chelsea are going to recruit set-piece specialists to work in a newly created club-wide department.

And Cueva is understood to be one of the men on the radar of Chelsea, who believe their opponents last Saturday, Brentford, are one of the best examples of maximising set pieces.

Cueva’s official title at Brentford is ‘tactical statistician’, which includes responsibility for the set-pieces and he will often shout instructions to the players from the technical area. He was booked during Brentford’s victory at Stamford Bridge earlier this season, below.

Born in Mexico, Cueva was previously strategic analysis manager at Club Deportivo Guadalajara, known as Chivas, before he moved to the UK in September 2020.

While it is not known whether there has been an approach or any talks yet, Brentford are used to having their set-piece specialists poached, having seen Nicolas Jover, who went to Manchester City and then to Arsenal, Gianni Vio, who worked with Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur, and Andreas Georgson, who has worked for Arsenal and Malmo, all depart.

Brentford have been one of the most effective and innovative teams at set-pieces for some time, while Aston Villa have a set-piece specialist and Nottingham Forest employed one at the end of last year.

Injuries have impacted Brentford’s statistics this season, but only Arsenal and Manchester City had conceded fewer goals from set-pieces than Thomas Frank’s team before last weekend’s games, although Chelsea had scored two more from set-pieces than the Bees.

Chelsea say Pochettino has been involved in the process of creating a set-piece department, despite sources stating otherwise and the head coach dismissing the importance of specialists last month.

Pochettino declared that “football belongs to the players, not to the specialists” and suggested the club should look to the summer transfer market to improve their set-piece record.

“We work a lot on set-pieces. After that, it is about the quality of the player. It is about the takers,” said Pochettino. “We don’t have a specialist. Maybe Chilly [Ben Chilwell] is good in the delivery but after that, we don’t have a specialist. If you want to be good at set-pieces, we work a lot. But then you need good takers.

“When you have good takers, and of course, Wolves have good takers, and like Manchester City have or other clubs. It is not down to the work. We work similarly. But the problem is to have good takers.

“We have specialists [coaches]. We are a coaching staff in charge of everything. You can have a specialist and you can promote the specialist. Or you can have the specialist and not promote the specialist. It depends how you want to sell the idea of working on set-pieces. We have a specialist, we have a group of analysts for set-pieces, we have the coaching staff and we work a lot. And then it is about the quality. At the moment, we were talking about trying to find a good specialist [player] for next season.

“Look before at West Ham and after. What changed? After and before? It’s not the same. The taker is [James] Ward-Prowse. Or he is Pochettino, no? Prowsey is a much better taker than me. For sure, you can work, like West Ham were working. But now, you add a player like him, you increase the percentage. That is football. Football belongs to the players. Not to the specialists.”

Chelsea’s creation of a set-piece department is part of a number of performance-related changes that were first put forward during a club review last summer.

You would think the players would be interested enough to create and practice their own plays wouldn’t you? They would probably have an instinct into whether it would work or not. Maybe the discs and magnetic board are out of bounds to the players.

Martin Samuel comments.

He makes it sounds like it's virtually a done deal though mainly in order to have a dig at Chelsea rather than his usual grumbles about us. so I'll let him off

Bernardo Cueva

His initial role was "tactical statistician". Does anyone know if he contributes in any other way aside from set pieces?

Bernardo Cueva

Mad as a box of frogs, love it when he loses it on the line and first one in when it does get feisty. Met him in The Cricketers with his family last season and lovely, friendly bloke who recognised us from the Dug Out.
Wish him well, the big bald Scandi is definitely Thomas right hand man and person he talks to most during a game

He runs around waving the tactics folder and pointing stuff out and then stands ss close to the pitch as he can screaming instructions to players when we have set pieces or are defending them

Bernardo Cueva

A massive loss. He’s Thomas Frank’s most trusted colleague.

Bernardo Cueva

The grass is not always greener, except in Ireland, of course
He will be back. mark my words.

Bernardo Cueva

This is the price of success which I am sure the owner of the club anticipates . Others will always try to buy your magic formula , in particular cash rich fools who put people in charge and then interfere when they feel like without any respect for the structure of the organisation they own . I am confident we will have succession plan in place for all key roles.

I always thought his brother, Jose, was a better coach, he had something especial about him.
