BFC Set-up Development Squad

Great news. We really will be the Barcelona of the lower leagues (well, perhaps Ajax).

Our most succesful seasons in recent years under Coppell & Allen, we didn't have a reserve team in any leagues and survived on ad hoc friendlies etc. So not sure it is a problem.

Seems as though Bush has finally been given a pro contract for next season, in the development squad, along with Cosgrove, Kamau (sp) and Morgan. Blake has to wait it seems. There's another friendly, v Kentish Town, for the other 'Trialists' to see if they can get into the Development Squad.

Will this mean Wenger doesnt have to go too far to nick young foreign players for peanuts once we've spent loads of money developing them ?

Seriously , if we spend time and money on these kids how can we protect our selves from big clubs poaching the best ones on the cheap ?

I thought they would all be signed on professional contracts? If so I presume we could command a decent transfer fee?

Doesn't matter how long the contract is, we'd be due compensation if another club came in for them.

Don't we get comp based on the costs we incur developing them if we sell a player under 24?

How does the compensation work... Surely so much per season on a sliding scale to cover the initial investment. If that is correct if they are just signing now then minimal return. Could be wrong but would like to understand how the compensation thing works.

Id like to know more too . Lets be honest most of these kids ,spesh the foreigners dont want to play for BFC .They want another chance to play with the bigger boys at bigger clubs .We have a ex Feyenoord winger at the mo ,has his dream always been to leave the Dutch giants for us ?

Probably not, but if it earns us a few quid then why not ;)

I guess the lads are just desperate to get a foot on the ladder and anywhere will do. I am sure he would have preferred Feyenoord but they probably let him go for a good reason.. Not good enough.
Funny how people mention the big guns coming in and stealing the talent. In my experience is usually works the other way round with the smaller clubs getting the cast offs from the big boys.

Please excuse my ignorance, are we really going to have for example 15-20 pros in a development squad and 20ish pros in a 1st team squad. If so, it is staggering and we must really be serious! If I have got all confused please tell me.Thanks in advance.

will it not cost an absolute fortune to run with wages etc? and whats the difference between this and just having a reserve team who play friendlies?

There will be probably eight to ten young pro's in the Development Squad which is financed separately from the playing budget. Yes it is another substantial investment by Matthew Benham and we have been looking at scores of youngsters who have been released by mostly Premiership and Championship clubs but where it is believed they have a good chance of making a decent career as a pro footballer. These youngsters will play friendly games against other comparable sides and there is also the ability to play any of our first team squad returning from injury (say) by prior arrangement with the other club. So what we have working upwards is the Centre of Excellence (in turn moving hopefully to Academy status) with the best youngsters going into the Development Squad and then on to the First Team squad. We are looking for a conveyor belt essentially and I am reminded that Crystal Palace released Jay Tabb when he was fourteen I believe and he was picked up by Brentford. Probably only a small number per year of the Development Squad will move on to First Team Squad status each year but they will all be given a fair shot at making a career in the game.

That's probably just QPR trying to up their profile on the back of a relationship with Brentford. Typical eh!!!

Striker Dwight Gayle is one of his former Stansted players on the radar and is currently on trial at League One side Brentford.

The former Arsenal schoolboy won the Essex Senior League Golden Boot award last season, scoring 35 goals for the Airportmen on their way to League Cup success and a place in the last 32 of the FA Vase.

But if Gayle doesn’t make it at Brentford, and decided to play Ryman One North football next season, Spillane can only see him joining the Motormen.

“Dwight is a young lad that is capable of stepping up the pyramid,” he added.

“He did the business for me last season in the Essex Senior League and as there always is at this stage, plenty of clubs are interested.

“But if he is playing at this level next season I can only seeing him coming to Redbridge.”

Interesting stuff. I heard a couple of young hot prospects from one of the biggest North West clubs were likely on season long loans.

Harry Beautyman, just released by Orient, played very well for their ressies in the last game at BFC. Captained the side, scored 2 goals - one a cracking freekick - and looked a very good m/field player in the making. Could be a useful player for this squad - surprised that they haven't taken him on.
