Crowd Trouble

Seeing as crowd trouble was part of football in the oldun days, and I'm interested in the subject (although I must stress I'm not interested in getting involved unless I have too!) so I've opened a few more threads. also I'm sure my father inulged himself so to speak at one time
wink.gif

If anyone complains, fair enough, delete the thread. (again I dont think violence is 'good', I'm just interested as I'm sure other younger bees are as to what it was like in the bad days of our fathers).

Ok, enough of that, what I wanna know is basically (all about Brentford):
Mob names
Famous 'battles'
Ends took: where/when etc
Invaders of the Royal Oak/other stands
How did you feel getting involved/watching? etc etc

Over to you chaps....

Great thread DGB. I too are not condoning violence but the seventies atmospheres were something else !!. To the under 20's who are not aware , Watford used to be our biggest rivals in those days and when we played them at home it always kicked off. My earliest memories of crowd trouble in the Royal Oak was when Watford "took it" one game big time about 200 of them . You always had to rely on the New Rd boys to come round and try and take it back. In those days you had free movement all over GP. Sheff Weds caused aggro one time I remember. The former Hate corner used to house away fans and the abuse hurled to and from the Royal Oak was quite naughty !!. Does anyone remember when Crystal Palace fans invaded the pitch during a league cup game back in the seventies. But one of the best nights ever at GP was when we played Watford and won 3-0. We scored 3 times in the first 15 mins. The Royal Oak went mental that night. Oh the memories...

Cardiff City away FA Cup 4th round 1971.I was a total free for all and I was so lucky that day.You know how it is at that age peer pressure but I got in 3 excellent separate wacks in the ground and healthy solar plexus one in the toilet outside. All i got was a scuffed neck.Great memories also of a Swansea away game where we were ouit numbered but fought the bastards from each end of a railway carriage and we beat em.Then there was the Chesterfield supporters throwing fireworks at our rebel coach as it stopped at the traffic lights.....three of them wished they hadnt and in fact one of them was till on the ground when the officila Golden Miller coach pulled up behind. I was then banned form the supporters club after attending a hearing.Great fun and great days,no weapons just healthy defending ones clubs rights and keeping the colours flying.Thats what makes me sick today as if you call another teams supporter a fat, black, bald, ginger or ugly bastard you can get ejected.I was fighting with a crowd of Darlo fans once at Feethams and I got thrown out with them......sh*t!!!.....they were fine outside, even showed me how to get back in the ground.I dont understand today with all these stewards breathing down your neck

Anyone have tales of aggro with Luton?

(Good start btw)

You need to get Chrisbee to relate the battle of the Bricklayers as i wasnt in there

In the old days the football violence was never a problem, asa young lad of 12-16 I never felt threatend or intimidated. The two set of rival fans always met and in a rather 'polite' way asked each other if they wanted. No days its all ambushes and punch first ask questions later.

Somehow it was more exceptable then, as mori kind of indicated above only those who wanted to be involved were, there were never any knives, although I do recall Sheffield Wednesday throwing the jagged tops of off baked ben cans at the roof of the Oak so that they rained down on us Bees fans.

The voilence was also reported as ebing part and parcel of teh game, I recall reading one article taht said it wasn't Tottenhams night as they were completly outplayed by Arsenal who even held the Shelf all night and my mate who didn't travel to Swindon one year knew about the voilence as the the Capital radio reporter stated that the game was so so dour that most spectators were watching the Brentford hold their own in the home end.

Todays hooligan is definatley a different kind of animal, who must have no place in todays game.

Crowd Trouble

A decent topic at last!

Seriously though, gotta agree - even though I was too young for most of what went on during the late seventies and early eighties, todays lads seem to just want violence for violence sake which is wrong.

I heard some horror stories from some mates of mine who are Fulham fans about QPR 'lads' in their 40's walking down the Fulham Palace road after the game last season. Basically they were tw*tting anything that moved - women and kids included and that is so far removed from the old days its not true.

I wrote an article for TITS a few years ago called 'Back to the Seventies' which was basically about aggro from a young teenagers point of view and I got absolutely slaughtered for it. Why? The worst that happened to anyone back then was a split lip and a nosebleed! If you didn't want to get involved you didn't have to - end of story.

I get really pissed off with all the kids down at GP talking about what they're going to do to QPR next season. Get real boys - they will murder us! I for one am certainly not looking forward to their lads attacking our women and children supporters - are you?

I blame Charlie myself.

Thankfully, at least you can now normally avoid the mindless cretins (no sorry I suppose you have to have some form of mind to be a cretin) who pose as football fans but are really just seeking violence.

It was not always the case. I remember going to Colchester with Wise Old Bee and being indisciminately pelted with sharpened coins by the home fans. Quite a few people got bad cuts. Legging it from Millwall after a cup replay (I wish someone had timed me because Linford had nothing on my running that night). There were kniives then and bottles and other 'nasties' including the infamous Millwall 'steel hook. I also remember being beaten up in Oxford on the walk back to the station from the Manor Ground for not wearing an Oxford scarf. There was a far more prevalent "threat" of violence in the 70's and there were some grounds you just did not visit or where you took it VERY carefully.

Crowd Trouble

The 2 away grounds that I dreaded leaving were Swindon & Oxford , where you had to walk past the home end to get back to your car ! . The worst walk back to your car ever must of been the year we beat Millwall at the old Den. We beat them 2-1 or 1-0 I cannot remember , it was the game Stan Bowles got attacked when he was warming up and the fan ran on the pitch to punch Paul Roberts. In those days it was wise to take out some life insurance when going to an way game !!.

Any stories from this season or last ?
I know that Reading away this season saw Reading being prevented from entering there own pub !

we were on the train at reading station after last seasons 0-1 at madjeski when the 'reading youth' decided we looked game for a bashing. these guys looked bloody mental, but were luckily too thick to work out that they would have to cross the platform to get on the train. contented themselves with hammering on the window and issuing threats, then ringing their mates at the next station (luckily also thick and waiting at the wrong end). my mate recognised one of them off that dougal mcintyre uncovered. very nasty work.

Nah, it will be just like league games against Fulham. Having said that they will want to bring a few more, but if the game was palyed in April the tickets could be sold out pre-season

it's been a while since we played them tho hasn't it??? i hope they go down, like i've said before i would definitely make the effort for that game, it would be a cracker!!

Yes, we'll get our f++king heads kicked in. Just ask Fulham what happened to them last season.

Good thread! I can remember
Millwall home early seventies - each pub was systematically destroyed destroyed and at half time the Brook Road programme stand went up in flames. I can still hear one publican obviously in shock yelling to anyone who'd listen "look what they've done to my toilets" while standing knee deep in the remains of his bar.

1971/72 promotion year I travelled to most of the games
Newport away - A trainload went. Typical of the lower divisions crowd control we were chaparoned by a single Morris Minor panda car. I remember every bus shelter losing it's glass and for lunch a hot dog vendor was chased off. We were pelted from the ground with sizable stones. One just missing the head of yours truly. They turned out to be reprobate children of about 12 years old! Score 0-0 rained all day - horrible dump.
Aldershot away - Aided with a bunch of Chelsea supporters (who strangely just showed up), the Aldershot end ran away. I finally understood why the ground was called a park. 2-1 Bees, great header from O,Mara

One of the strangest was against Charlton
(a cup game I think)when they massed down at the Brook Road end and for the whole of the game and there wasn't a hint of a Brentford voice. However, right at the end of the game from out of the New Road stand came a huge Brentford mob who walked silently into the heart of the Charlton lot and without so much of a hint of trouble the Charlton crowd simply drifted off.

In those days in my misspent youth Brentford relied upon other London clubs to help us out. Regular visitors I remember were Chelsea.

Crowd Trouble

I remember a big off with Fulham circa 1980 in the Royal Oak. I think it was as the teams came out. Fulham made themselves known and all hell broke looe with the Police eventually separating the 2 warring factions.

Those were the days when it was the done thing to have a go at the home end.

One other was Swindon away last game of the season. Also about 1980.

On arrival we got chased from the station.
At kick off there was a huge ruck in the home end and eventually about 50 Brentford were led along the pich to the away end to a heroes welcome.

Those were the days - jumpers for goalposts!!!

Crowd Trouble

I was at the Newport away ,we were segregated untill you wanted to go to the bog, there was only one set of urinals, well it was a cow shed swimming in piss really.

I remember the Royal Pak was quite spasmodic in its numbers.Evening games drew larger crowds with Chelsea coming to join us.They used to attend when they could to ' help us out ' against larger London foes

Trouble was Nige, that match was a second replay on a neutral ground between us and Southend and the league decreed it should be played at Millwall. The Millwall scumbags turned up and beat the crap out of both sets of supporters. Do you remember the testimonial with QPR for, I believe, Peter Gelson? That was a right nasty affair as well and I remember climbing up into the seats on the Braemar terrace to avoid a kicking. we made our own entertainment in those days eh?

Well remembered WOB! Was it London Bridge that we had to leg it form? I remember scabbling up into the Braemar seats at the testimonial. Also can you remember which teams supporters turned up at GP in white boiler suits and bowlers a la Clockwork Orange looked like a bunch of tw*ts and were promptly kicked to buggery by the boys in Brooks Road!

Crowd Trouble

The games at home to Millwall, considering their reputation, were always tame affairs from what I can remember.

I know there was trouble in a Kent Cup game (it was a pre-season mini tournament made up of two groups of 4 teams, we lost 1-0 Luton in the final which was played in about the second week of the season).

During most games hey would take the Oak and would stand on the left hand hand side whilst Brentford sttod at the front and to their right. There was a no mans land of about ten feet between the supporters who both sang, cheered and went mental when they scored.

I remember once asking my mate, as a niave little boy 'When are we going to run them out' to be honest we had the boys to do soand I had witnessed them take on alot more than what was invading, when this bloke said to me 'Son, we could kick them out today in five minutes, but next week they will back with twice as many and will kick our arses'.

I recall a rumour that the leader of the Millwall's F Troop was the brother of one of the people in the New Road firm.

Crowd Trouble

I remember at Alan Nelmes' testimonial in the late 70's a fair amount of off-pitch "entertainment" with the boys from Chelsea.

Interesting thread! Personally I've never ever seen any aggro at the ground itself but one day in particular stands out.
I was a barman at the Red Lion in 1982-84 - What a pub! Anyway one day OXFORD were visiting us - just a couple of weeks after Millwall had. Now my boss closed for the Millwall game (reputation I guess) but he had no idea that Oxford were a lot of bastards and opened up the pub for the lunchtime session. Guess he wanted to make up the extra cash since he closed earlier that month.
Well all the other local pubs shut there doors didn't they so the Oxford were well pleased when they found the Lion serving booze. I was working behind the bar with some New Zealand bird - Honestly it was a nightmare - they were 5 deep at the bar - all along it - and each "Customer" wanted 5 or 6 pints - honestly with a staff of 6 you would have been hard pressed.
Of course the Oxford got the sh*ts waiting for drinks and suddenly the sh*t hit the fan - first of all a pool ball when through the plate glass window, quickly followed by a fire extinguisher in a different window, then believe it or not glasses rained down on the bar - on to there own supporters! They loved it of course but f*** I was sh*tting myself - Eventually the coppers restored order - told my boss he was a f***wit for opening and left. never thought oxford was that bad till then, but reading this thread makes me realize I , and the boss were very naive!
Makes me laugh now though!

Watched football at a lot of London grounds in the 70's ( well I could'nt get my mates to come to GP surprise surpise) and as I remember it GP was very quiet place for trouble.

I can remember two blokes having a real go at each other on the Ealing Rd terrace and most fans around laughed and mouthed the same question "Why".

We might get romantic about aggro at Bees matches but in truth it was very tame.

Crowd Trouble

i dont agree - remember addlestone and weybridge replay in 1980 - kicked off on the Ealing with 30 Brentford skins(most in Red Harrington jackets) against 100 addlestone/chelsea headcases. lasted for 10 minutes as OB couldnt control it and most of the crowd missed Brentford scoring a penalty as the entertainment on the Ealing was gripping!!!!!
i even think someone was stabbed outside after and speaking recently to a bloke from Addlestone, he said it was a mental night and all the kids at his school were saying how dangerous it was to go to Brentford!!

there are plenty of other occasions but im sure ChrisBee will tell more???!!!

Crowd Trouble

I remember that Addlestone game well. I was up the Royal Oak end that night and I remember when we got the penalty. The 2 mobs just went at it and were eventually separated. I know a few blokes from Addlestone who were there that night and said they got run all over the place afterwards by Brentford 'nutcases'!

Crowd Trouble

remeber Bristol city at home in 1985, when 30 pissed up ciderboys came onto the Braemar looking for a ruck and where taken apart by the Braemar boys??
around 50 city in the seats above tried to get down and join in but took one look at the demolition going on below and ran out down the stairs and into the Ealing rd.
turned very nasty with OB hitting out at anyone with truncheons(remember an old bloke caught up in it and being knocked down by a copper).

seems quite peaceful these days doesnt it??!!

Crowd Trouble

I liked the "crowd" trouble at Oldham yesterday. The little northern scamps in baseball caps and Kappa tops runnning into the Brentford end when the gates were open at the end - only to run out pissing them selves. In the words of another annoying mank "My Arse"

Crowd Trouble

remember the trouble at oldham in our 3rd rd cup game back in the early 90's??
quite a few bees got knicked and charged for a ruck with oldhams main boys(fyc) outside just before the game.
it was a good 30 on 30 toe to toe for 5 mins with Brentford getting the upper hand until the old bill arrived.

it was also the coldest ive ever been at a football match!!!!

I remember it well. There was a load of city boys on the pitch at the end and a few of them confronted me and my Dad while we were trying to leave. (They were big tough boys too, coz I was only 14 at the time).

I think my Dad told them to "grow up or f*** off" and they ambled off looking embarrassed!

Crowd Trouble

Cardiff City and Swansea Town, as they were then before they attained City status, were always hot spots on the away travel scene.

No one has mentioned Exeter City in the late 60's. I rememeber that at the end of the game thay always used to migrate from their cow shed to the coach park.(no parking outside the ground like now). Used to then run away twice as quickly when anyone confronted them.

Crowd Trouble

having gone to every exeter away since 81 they still practice their olympic sprinting whenever we're there!!!!

Seems tame in comparison to the seventies (I was only born in 76') but there was quite a bit of trouble after the BCFC v BFC game when we were relegated from Div 1.

I was only 14ish thus in the official coaches. As we were waiting to pull away the gates from the main stand next to the away end were opened and what looked like 1000's (but prob a few 100) of Bristol lads came out rocking the coaches and throwing stones etc etc.

When they got to our coach the emergency door at the back was opened and they had a pop at the guy behind me (gobbing into the bargain !) and did'nt stop until ONE copper appeared - good on him as he was outnumbered just a bit !!!

ok then, if youre sitting comfortably i'll begin....................at the 2-2 game when we went down, very volatile atmosphere in the ground with the New Rd B Block in its prime(must have been around 200+ youths and older boys in there for that game).
luton scored late on and 2 of their boys jumped over and ran along new rd thinking they could take the p1ss. suddenly one bees fan ran on(u know who u r sir!!!) and lamped 1 luton and chased after him only to fall flat on his face from skidding in the mud.
looked very funny when they showed it on the local tv news!!!!

after the game mostly quiet BUT THEN at 7pm the brickies was attacked by 50+ luton and these were no kids or muppets. in going to bees since 1976 this was the nastiest firm i'd ever come accross and for 10 minutes it was absolute mayhem. luton were all armed with metal bars, sticks, baseball bats and knives. yes its true and was bloody frightening. bouncer on the door had a brick thrown in his face and a few of the older blokes ran out only to come flying back in.
luton tried to smash their way in but we all stormed to the door and fought them out with whatever was lying around. pub was having windows put through and everyone inside was braking up the tables, chairs etc to throw back out along with ashtrays and bottles.
we succesfully stopped them coming in (there were only about 20 of us in there at most) and they stood outside not wanting to rush the door again.
old bill that were outside in car when luton turned up DROVE OFF(just remember that when they pick on 15 year olds in the ground)and only returned 15 mins later when they all had riot gear on. luton were taken under escort back to st pancras and no-one was arrested(apart from one black guy)for what was a deliberate and very nasty attack on bees fans having a quiet drink.

just shows what the ob are like when something really happens at GP.
still got scar on hand as souvenir from that day but could have been a lot worse if we hadnt stopped them from getting in. i really think someone could have been killed that day as you dont come back over 2 hours after the game armed for war unless you really mean it.

funniest thing to come out of this horror story was one of our mates went to get some money out from the high st bank 2 min before luton turned up and returned 20 mins later when the pub looked like a nato attack on belgrade!!!! he missed it all and couldnt believe what had happened.............and they all lived happily ever after. damn right, and around that time there only used to be about 6 or 7 seven of us in there at 7pmish for most matches. thank f@ck there were enough to keep em out.

still at least the brickies looks nicer these days...........

Anyone remember Man City at home in the 89 cup run...

All off outside the Brickies before the game then inside we were sat just below their seats!!!!!!

Cue a shower of bricks, coins, seats bottles down on us(very messy!!!!)

It might be old age but i distinctly remember a certain sweetie man throwing his fishing brolly into their seats and king haralding one of the manc B&*tards!!!!

Funniest thing was one the real old skool characters on the braemar got nicked along with 3 city fans and we held in the back of a van until the end of the game. With about 10 mins to go the mancs ask the copper the score and he says 3-1. They're going mental (in the van!!) until the copper says "To Brentford" and our man promptly lays all 3 of em out!!!!!!

Still you've got to laugh havent you?

One game I will always remember from the late seventies was a trip to Pompey.

I'll set the scene, Portsmouth Played 4, Won 4. Attendance for the day 20,000

And what do Brentford do on our visit, beat them 2-0.
I remember bags of piss being thrown at us BEes supporters, yes bags of piss, cans of beer, coins and stones. I have never visited that groound since.

Voice - re Luton.

We probably brought it on oursleves after giving Watford a similar late kicking two weeks earlier. Never mind good fun to the end. Just think, we can send the basta@rds down in a few weeks, just about worth the wait.
