im not going mad like some on here, the only blokes scoring for us were written off last season as past it and the saviour hasn't hit the net in 6 games......top 10

CRUNCH TIME

The signs are mostly positive. We should do well but exactly how well-let's wait til the end of January [ the usual line] and then see. I have to say though that I've had a punt on us for promotion which is the first in 50+ years!

Must admit that I haven't seen any of the friendlies - but haven't last season's write-offs got a couple of midfielders behind them creating chances, which they didn't have last year.

CRUNCH TIME

...having earlier made a run for the promotion places, in that up and down way that most football clubs have over a season.

But we've already been down this road. Let's not go there again.

If the new manager can uncover hidden riches in the same players we had last year, that would be great.

The discussion related to the players the present management is inheriting from last season. It would be a pity if 2010-11 were to become a non-season, airbrushed from history and not to be discussed under any circumstances.

.......................................so why did you - let's not go down that particular rue, non?...........................

We're German now, efficient and ruthless. We will beat the lesser teams

This has always been the key to a successful season for Brentford - we tend to raise our game for the big boys - then sit back and get mugged by the minnows (which can be painful!)

CRUNCH TIME

Getting a little concerned about Charlton Athletic.
Snapping up a lot of players. They've just added Ben Hamer and now Andy Hughes from Scunny.

Their signings have been very good i reckon.

i see where you are coming from however i have a feeling we will, at the very least, make the play-offs by a distance.

CRUNCH TIME

Going to be tough and we have to be realistic it wont be easy, but top 6 would be great, and maybe with some luck and consistency with good run of wins maybe sneak into the top 2. There are some big clubs in this league and I feel where we finish will depend on how the big clubs perform. Charlton have brough a whole load of good players and they will be up there, Hudders once again, expect Wednesday and United to be up there, Preston, MK Dons maybe.
Some positives are that lot of the top clubs have lost a number of their good players, and hopefully the three that came down will have slow start to adjusting to league 1.
There will no doubt be a team that will surprise us all.
Its definately not black and white of who will be challenging and who will not be challenging.

CRUNCH TIME

Ambitious owners. If Powell doesn't get the most out of that squad, then he's out of a job by Christmas, say if they're not top six.

Yep good signings but question marks over their manager. Could benefit us if it hinders them a bit.

Having said that from an outsiders viewpoint we're probably being viewed in a similar way.

Colchester and MK Dons will be around the play offs/top ten as usual, Chesterfield I think to be upper midtable too.

No one really seems to be mentioning Preston as title contenders but I wouldn't be surprised if they do similar to Norwich a couple of years back.

Huddersfield still have a handful of attacking players who can decimate defenders in this league on their day so they'll be well up there.

Sheffield Wednesday could go either way. Players in their squad they should have been nowhere near as low as they finished last season. Megson is a ****** though and still financial question marks over them.

Sheffield United should be there or there abouts. Especially with off field problems meaning Ched Evans isn't likely to move on. If he lasts the season he could bang in a few in League 1. Have they still got Ward as well?

I'm not too worried about Bournemouth. Their fans seem confident of emulating or improving on last season but I can't see it. Never know though.

Orient fancy their chances of play offs but I'm hoping last season was a fluke and the quality of sides this year has them back milling around mid table and below.

Scunny are another like Preston, not making headlines this summer but have a decent record in recent years of doing well in League 1.

Hartlepool and Oldham might have a good run of form again but probably short lived. Notts County to do similar and hover around mid table. 3 teams not likely to challenge for promotion but could take points of those that are.

1. Huddersfield
2. Sheffield United

3. Preston
4. Charlton
5. Brentford

Tricky semi final against Charlton could go either way but we shall see come the end of the season.

***Can't see much happening with Colchester. They haven't strengthened.
MK Dons will be their usual formidable but unglamourous selves.
Chesterfield have a good set-up but reading their fan's blog, they seem to feel they need a goalscorer.

No one really seems to be mentioning Preston as title contenders but I wouldn't be surprised if they do similar to Norwich a couple of years back.

****Won't do a Norwich, but Phil Brown isn't the plonker some people take him for and I reckon North End will be top six, playing some nice football.

Huddersfield still have a handful of attacking players who can decimate defenders in this league on their day so they'll be well up there.

***** Probably hard to beat, but also will drop points. Can't get excited by Huddersfield and basically don't like them.

Sheffield United should be there or there abouts. Especially with off field problems meaning Ched Evans isn't likely to move on. If he lasts the season he could bang in a few in League 1. Have they still got Ward as well?

***Sheff Utd might not fly out the gates, but I reckon they will be strong second half of the season.

Scunny are another like Preston, not making headlines this summer but have a decent record in recent years of doing well in League 1.

***thought so too, and tipped them as dark horses, but wondering now if other sides have strengthened more.

Agree with you selection, though not necessarily in that order. If Donaldinho gets his scoring boots on, we can set the pace along with Charlton in this division.

You can see what fans from various Div One clubs reckon of their chances here:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/football-league-blog/2011/aug/01/league-one-2011-12-preview
So that's eight teams to win promotion, ahead of another eight making the Play-Offs, with the remaining eight all comfortable in mid-table then...

Should be an interesting and enjoyable season!

P.S. Even if he didn't actually predict a relegation-battle, it's "Hat's Off" to the Stevenage fan for at least conceding that: "To be competing in the third tier of English football is an amazing feat for the club and something that we'll enjoy regardless of the outcome".

Interesting... showing other football fans have recognised our potential this season if plenty have put money on us.

I think the market is still changing. There are some late deals being done in both the Championship and Division One.
All I ask is that on the last day of the coming season, we are still involved in a promotion race.

Brave Predictions 1997. I've kept them to compare with the actual end of season table. :)

I think all we know is we don't have a clue.

Lets check back in after 10 games, after Christmas, and after 46 games. :)

Predictions is it. Im saying no to Charlton, spent a lot of money on not a great deal of quality, with a manager of questionable skills. Orient could be a dark horse with Cureton & Mooney up front. And I get a feeling that Sheffield United will do a Wednesday this season. I do think there will be a noticeable gap in quality this season between the top and the bottom. Sacked bosses in League 1...Powell, Dickov, Parry, Wadsworth, Bradbury, Wilson, Eyre.

Top 6

I wasn't sure where to put Brentford to be honest, think maybe it's possible they'll come 2nd, but that could just be favouritism. But don't want to go 8th or so as that could just be me trying not to apply favouritism.

Let's have a betting perspective on it. According to the market, ie the consensus view of a large weight of money from many quarters, our most likely finishing position is 7th, a whisker behind MK Dons for that final play-off place.

The clubs you mention USED TO be big once, but now they are on the same level as us.

If Dickov gets fired, he has my sympathy, he hasn't been given much to work with at Oldham.
Annoying l'il runt as a player (okay, tenacious bugger), but he's been doing a decent job as a manager.

Bees will emerge as automatic promotion contenders with this squad.............with Preston, Sheff Utd, and Notts County in the mix!

Think we have brought in definite quality, but still a couple men short. At the moment sticking with 9th place.

I like the look of Donaldson, but read an interesting stat where he scored about 80% of his goals last year against bottom the 9 sides in L2, but scored only 4 goals against the top 8 sides in 15 or so games which worries me. Not 100% sure he will be able to fully cut it at this level which is why I would like another striker up front.

I'd add Huddersfield and MK Dons but Notts County are more likely to be nearer the bottom than the top!
