I think it is quite common for players to be released 7 days before the tournament by negotiation with the national team - similiar to what we saw for players brleing released for the Qatar World Cup.

It's Leeds (H) on 13th December and Wolves (A) on 20th December. Burkina Faso play their first game on the 24th so I would expect him to be available for Leeds... We'll see.

As others mentioned, yes the four best third place teams get out of the group. I think AFCON players will miss three games if they are eliminated in the group stage and five games if they make the last 16 - the timing of the early January games is not very helpful, Sunderland is the midweek after Everton and then there's a 10 day gap for the FA cup third round.
