Raya stopped and set himself as the ball was dropping for the first bounce after Armstrong’s first touch, as that was the first opportunity he could have struck the ball...if he had “gone all the way” as you’re suggesting and Armstrong had taken the earlier shot he would have not been balanced to make the save...

This is standard stuff keepers are taught.

I understand what you are saying, but as Raya did not make the save with his "standard stuff keepers are taught", getting midway was not the right decision this time.

there's a lot of "benefit of hindsight" being used here (on this thread) though!!

David Raya

He made 2 goal-savings stops (albeit giving away a pen after one of them, not that I think it was a pen), and credit Armstrong he finished well. We wouldn't be anywhere near the top without Raya and Pinnock so neither deserves to dwell on that goal

What would the right decision have been?

Please, read my earlier posts. As I wrote, I saw the entire situation (from Blackburn goalie's kick) from several angles because I was watching it on Viaplay.

This is old story already, and we have match tonight... so.

Go all the way or not at all?
I forgot goalkeeping was so simplistic lol

The equivalent of just saying...”just put the ball in the net, you’re a striker” ??*♂️

1. So he doesn’t go and he allows Armstrong the chance to drill the ball across him into the far corner.
2. Doesn’t go and allows Armstrong to bring the ball inside thus creating a better opportunity.
3. Goes “all the way” aimlessly and Armstrong takes the early shot whilst Raya off balance and more than likely scores.

Righto...lol

a goal was scored, therefore a mistake was made. you just have to look hard enough. if we keep working on this, eventually we can achieve the target of not conceding any goals :sorted:

But what about taking care of the ball and pitch geography? ??*♂️

David Raya

Absolutely. Has been an interesting debate on here, but, at the end of the day, my opinion of Raya remains very, very high. He is a breath of fresh air as a keeper. Positive, enthusiastic and, above all else, very decisive. He is a fantastic shot stopper, does incredibly well in one-on-ones, claims the ball more frequently than many keepers (as opposed to punching), but reads situations very quickly so that he decides judiciously when to catch and when to punch. His feet are also excellent and he distributes effectively and intelligently with both feet (and out of hand). Finally, his passion for the team and the club is clear to see. Wears his heart on his sleeve in this respect (in a very positive way).

:imwith:

David Raya

That is not possible, silly you.

well indeed. so why over-analyse. he could've made any decision in that situation and been beaten. and he faced the same guy in an even clearer one-on-one later and came out on top. no need to over-analyse ( lol lol lol )

No need to analyse, of course, over or under. But it is so much more interesting, and this is, among other things, a football forum after all... lucky me nobody has called me a Blackburn fan yet.

Another clanger for their second. Coincidence or not, there have been several cock-ups since his mate left for Arsenal.

Swansea, Millwall, Leeds, Birmingham, Blackburn, Luton...that’s off the top of my head

Don't think it's clangers as such, just that the opposition now recognise his weakness and play on it. He is small for a modern day keeper. They put a couple of men on or around him at freehicks and corners and he struggles. Simple really.

I think the opposition must have recognised his weaknesses previously, given how many games he played for Blackburn. Their fans told us he'd make errors. For the first half of the season it looked like they were wrong, but this string of mistakes feels like Dan Bentley's bad patches all over again. Call me old fashioned, but I like a keeper who dominates his area, and it feels like an awful long time since we had one of them. Daniels should surely come into contention at the moment?

I don't want to comment on his performance last night until Hakonen_72 has analysed his performance :D

No way, Rayas distribution is way too good. I know what you mean, but he is only a short ass for a keeper, so he will never be commanding - he is used for his shot stopping and distribution.

He wasnt the reason we lost last night or drew against Blackburn, there are 10 players ahead of him who need to buck their ideas up.

David Raya

He's not as good as people had thought but he's competent enough for what we need. Raya needs to buckle up and realise he's going to get jostled at set pieces. It's no good crying to the referee afterwards.

You could argue that he was sandwich in between 2 Luton players last night - where was our defence?

If we continue to get refs as poor as yesterday it won't matter a jot what he does.

He is definitely the best we have ever had. Longer he stays at us the better he will get i believe. All keepers have an area of weakness . Raya's is his lack of height. His shot stopping and distribution are exceptional. He saved us a point against Blackburn only recently with the save against Armstrong. Only a select few have got it all. Currently probably only Allison, Ederson and Ter Stegen? Even people like De Gea and Kepa are susceptible too errors. I think the measurement of ability should be how many points he wins us with big saves in big moments. No one would of put it down as a mistake if Armstrong had tucked that chance away as it was not a clear and obvious error but not all keepers would have saved it. The anticipation, the body position etc. It feels like he saves more efforts than the average keeper would but there is no way to measure that metric. I don't know if this makes any sense but i gave it a shot.

Are you serious? He's the best keeper we've had for years. All keepers make the odd mistake but they are highlighted a lot more because they can inevitably lead to conceding a goal. A couple of good games and he'll come through O.K.

Very big statement. I am inclined to disagree. The following are better, imo:

Szczesny
Bentley
Lee
(you could argue Button)

To say he is "definitley the best we have ever had" when he has been here less than a season -- and has recently made a string of quite costly mistakes -- is an overstatement imo. But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

My take on the matter is that he simply isn't tall enough. Gets dominated too easily in the box. Also could be more vocal and commanding

ALSO: For the second goal, he appeals to the referee about a poss foul before the Luton goalscorer even shoots.

Big, big no-no. what do you think? https://youtu.be/3rxOeA_ldqI?t=55

I wasn't too amused at him smiling after the first OG either. Questions need to be asked about him.

Thought he was fouled for the second to be honest. But he started appealing to the ref rathe than setting himself for the shot.

Szczesney- A loan player so that does not count. Otherwise you could add in Alex McCarthy also.
Bentley- We literally sold him and replaced him with Raya. Bentley the season he left was shocking. Daniels came out the other side looking the better keeper.
Lee- Fair enough if thats what you think. I don't agree though. He played two proper seasons for us and was second choice to Button.

He is literally 1 inch smaller than Ter Stegen from Barcelona.... So as i stated in my first post. His weakness is his height at the moment. But its not the be all and end all. Better that then something else such as shot stopping. It can worked on similar to De Gea when he first came to the premier league and use to get battered from all angles and opposition use to just stick it on his head and make him make a decision.

The goal was annoying yes. But, he has far less mistakes to his name than points won. Even in the luton game he made a great save to keep us in it at 2-0 from Cornick.

As for the smile. I thinks its a rye smile. Not a happy smile... No one is happy to concede. It is more a smile of disbelief!

You just have to get on with it like everyone else does. I have been hacked off for some time now regarding the level of performance that we experience on an almost weekly basis by the 4 officials, nothing will change. The FA could make some really simple changes to make things a whole lot better, but they choose not to. Eveytime I watch a 6 nations game it just highlights to me how badly football is run and managed, but nothing will improve anytime soon.

David Raya

He's made a lot of mistakes recently but how many keepers in this division don't? Leeds have been moaning about their keeper all season, Fulham's gave them 3 goals away against Barnsley according to my Fulham supporting cousin.

I think once we have Jansson back the entire back line will feel a lot more in control, it's frustrating to watch yeah and I wouldn't want Raya in goal if we went up but he's as good as we're probably going to get at the moment.

Massive statement. Long too.

I’m inclined to disagree with your opinion.

Raya is the best reader of the game I have seen. He’s also, for me, the best distributor of the ball and this is instrumental in the way we play.

Bentley cost Brentford too many points over his time here.

Lee isn’t in the same league as Raya.

Button had a tendency to cock up too and wasn’t as strong distribution wise.

Wojiech was a special keeper but, for me, I don’t include. As, imo, I could add Steve Sherwood.....

ps how many points do you think we’ve lost because of Raya? I think five

Agreed mate. The change of GK coach can not of helped either. With the points he has gained us its definitely equalled out. Mistakes he has made just off the top of my head. Hull? Leeds (questionable whether foul or not) and Luton? So 1 maybe 2 points dropped max. Stoke at home and Blackburn at home he gained us 2 points. It's funny that when we play bad all our players are suddenly sh*te.

Millwall away I’m thinking of. 3 points. Hull at home too. So five points.

I said last weekend that he seemed to make more mistakes in the warm up than he used to. I’m no coach ( we’ll only FA Prelim) but it doesn’t seem the new GK coach is as dynamic as the last one. Could be a load of bollx though!

David Raya

I would agree that Raya is great at one-on-ones and with his feet but there is no getting away from the fact that he is small for a keeper and doesn't dominate his area. Frankly he isn't the kind of keeper I would be looking to have paid big money for as I would always go for a dominant keeper well over 6ft, but you pays your money and takes your choice. I'm not convinced Bentley made as many mistakes as some on here suggest. Over the course of a couple of years he made a lot of good saves and few mistakes

David Raya

but if you close the player down it reduces the angles even further. it's what most keepers would do. It was a great finish to be fair and you'd assume Raya was expecting Pinnock to head the ball away as he normally does.

The brilliant pinnock missed the ball. How can the blame be laid on the keeper. If he says on the line Armstrong just rolls it past him.

Should he have stayed, should he have gone, does my auntie have bollox, what we should be doing is blaming the CB for making the first error of the season.

Until about 3 games ago everyone was saying how he does dominate his area. A couple of mistakes doesn’t make him bad. All keepers make mistakes, name one keeper in the last 20 years who didn’t have a little spate of games when he made a few mistakes.

Should have had a penalty for the shirt pull last night by the way, VAR would have given it.

David Raya

I agree that all keepers make mistakes but I think he will continue to ship goals when coming for crosses in a packed area because he will be dominated by bigger players. Richard Lee had the same problem. As did Kevin Dearden, who was about the same height and weight as me!

The last two years Bentley cost the team upwards of 25 points. Too many errors and too many goals were down to him.

Bloody hell a few dodgy performances from the team and we look for scapegoats! Raya is now not good enough and on another thread Said is not a team player and totally selfish.

When my children were little toddlers if they didn’t get their own way then they would have a strop, seems like some on here fall into the same category.

He may not be the tallest keeper but this season has done wonderfully well stopping shops and distributing the ball well. He is smaller than Bentley yet have a little peek at the Bristol board and see what their fans think about him, I would much prefer Raya playing for us than Dan and genuinely believe he has saved us numerous points.
