In the predictions thread I confidently stated that Newcastle, on the couple of times I had seen them, did not employ a high press which would play into our hands. Presumably Howe instructed his players to put Raya and the defenders under pressure this time and it paid off for them. Any manager setting up his side against us us is going to do this now so David's ability to hit a long pass will be vital, as will getting players within ten yards of Ivan for flick-ons.

Yes and we should’ve learned from early in this game that we were gonna come under presssure from the press and stopped the intricate passing out from the back. I understand the aim is to help retain possession and build from the back with aim of hitting teams quickly with forward passing,
But sometimes against high pressing teams it is just downright scary!
It’s lovely when it works, but awful when it goes wrong.

So Howe read your comments on the GPG & thought...I know how to f#$k those pesky Bees up ?. It's all your fault.....

You're not wrong about Teams in increasingly doing this, especially since a couple of our defenders look like Raya's thrown them a live Hand Grenade on occasion (sorry Chic) when he passes short.

Not sure on occasion that DR's usual laser like precision has hit the heights of games last season but that could be for a number of factors including teams wishing up, him feeling a bit more under pressure & yesterday saw Toney win several headers on occasion but Bryan just starting too wide or not quite read the movement.

The killer second goal alas was just plain & simple a 100% David cock-up & we move on. Hoping we got 75% of our Circus act moments out of the way in one fell swoop......

I have never understood some of our fan's obsession about Raya being a great keeper who should be playing for Spain.

He has made some amazing saves to keep us in the game, yet every major keeper does that in the Premier League - but he is flawed by his amazing distribution of the ball .......to our opposing players.

I think we missed a trick when we didn't go for Pope or Henderson when they were available. Two who were willing to go anywhere either due to their desire to stay in the PL or play as a first teamer..

Don't get me wrong. I still pinch myself that we are playing in the Premier League, but I hope he isn't next season ... well at least not for us.
I hope we start using more of Strakosha or get someone new in the transfer market.
I also hope we lose the Scandinavian tourist guide when searching for additions to the squad in the next few transfer windows.
Maybe lose Mbeumo too.
So to confirm, you reckon Raya is a poor keeper and our policy of buying Scandinavian players who go onto become Internationals hasn’t worked?
I’ve seen Pope and Henderson both have howlers in last fortnight and Raya has had one bad game in I don’t know how long.
On reflection I need to just put you on ignore, you’re an idiot

David Raya

Raya made one fatal error but that doesn’t mean he had a bad game… not stunning but not bad.

As much as I love & rate Raya as being one of the top keepers in the PL I think it's a fair assessment to say he had a bad game yesterday. His handling was sound & he made one outstanding save but the mistake killed us & David at his absolute best might have done something with the first & third goals- harsh but I think with his foot speed & reflexes we've seem him keep similar efforts out.
Bad is obviously a subjective term & I appreciate others would disagree.

That's crazy mate, Raya along with Toney and Norgaard is are most important player. Do you not remember how poor we were last season when we lost him for a few months? He's our "quarterback" and sometimes gets things wrong, but he's vital for the way we play.

Why can't you see that?

David Raya

Love Raya as my goalkeeper, but not yesterday.
After the first went in, he ran around like Joe Hart on speed For the next 10 minutes.
52k got to him, his possession out of hand or ball to feet became frantic and very erratic.
He killed us at 2 nil. Instead of glove up and head up, he moaned at Jensen.
He came over to the coaches to moan again minutes later.
Raya is one of our top two keepers in recent history if not the best, but that took a few million off his price for anyone looking and put him safely in 3rd spot in the Spanish rankings of playing in Qatar.
Hes very very good, but yesterday he contributed to the nerviness across the line.
Credit where its due, but yesterday he used some of it up, making the 3 centre halves on edge when he had the ball to feet and that is a bad day at the office.

David Raya

Made some errors yesterday but still think he is comfortably a top 10 keeper in the prem, perhaps top 6 and we will miss him when hes gone
Don‘t disagree but I was surprised by the stats of this table from Fantasy Football Scout. According to the opta stats he should have saved 4-5 more goals than he has. Only the Southampton and Leicester keepers of the regular starters have a worse rating.

Doesn't that just mean the shots he's conceded from were from low xG positions not necessarily that he should have saved them? For example Arsenal's third goal against us was a very low xG chance but was also completely unstoppable.

Exactly right. xG is consistent because it normalizes all shots from the same area in terms of the chance that they would go in. For example, Zaha's goal against us when we played Palace had to be incredibly low in terms of xG, but he hit it so hard and right inside the post that Raya still didn't have much of a chance.

He eats paella,
His gloves are f***ing massive!!"

David Raya

Going to make the most out of watching Raya this season cause it looks like this will be his last season with us. Unreal performance last night.

David Raya

In my dreams.World Cup Final,England v Spain, penalty shoot -out,Raya fails to save Toney's penalty and the trophy is won

David Raya

Brilliant last night . After Ivan said he had four hands perhaps we should call him Visnu . Indian god with 2 sets of arms

David Raya

Everything I love about David on display last night. Great saves, that one where it was offside anyway was superb. Great distribution, that pinpoint ball to the right wing. A beauty. Spains number 1

David Raya

What about his 2nd half pass down the line over the halfway line to Ajer! Was the pass of the night by anyone on the park
Maybe, but Jensen hit a beautiful curling pass into the southwest corner, in the first half, that made me drool ?

David Raya

Probably my bad memory, but I only remember one truly world class save, and that was offside. Knows he has it when needed, but their shooting was awful.

Earlier one in second half from unapposed header from our RB position was exceptional too……
DR was going right, and stuck out his left hand to save IIRC…….Sort of reminded me of his one at the same end v Liverpool last year, in terms of reaction time……

A couple in the first half looked good too. (But we’re down the other end admittedly). Tip over from long shot, and reflex save from (subsequent??) corner……
