It was dear old Fred Ryecraft.

Fortunately more a rarely used reserve (no subs in those days) as he was slightly (!) overweight and went down to save in several movements over several seconds!
Many happy Saturday afternoons spent at a largely deserted Griffin Park watching Fred in goal for the reserves in the Football Combination whilst the first team were playing away fixtures. That makes me old Brentford by my reckoning.???

Sounds like there is a story there as to how it took you until 2022 to find the GPG?

Good for you why would I know if that was before I started going ffs please enlighten me with your wisdom oh masia?
WW 2 was done and dusted well before I was born but I still know who won :judge:

Its called history and I for one when it comes to the team I support don't just live in the here and now I like to try to understand as much as I can about the past of the club.

Care to offer a guess on why 1967 is such a significant year in the history of the club, for example

There’s a big leap between knowing why we hate QPR, and remembering a fringe player from the 1990s!

There is and I bet a good number of our "younger" fans don't know the answer but I guess it may be time for one of these

Probably going to sound silly, but it occurred to me that if David had taken a sideways swipe at that ball, with his right hand, rather than just try to block Salah’s final touch, he might just have cleared it into the air or over the bar. Random? Silly?

Yes I think it was saveable as Salah mis hit his first shot, but Salah did react quickly after kick it in.

David Raya

His distribution has been a little off in recent weeks and was particularly so yesterday
Agreed, several very uncharacteristic clearances straight to oppo or shanked out. Hasn't had his long kicking radar fully tuned for several weeks.
Decent save in second half & couple of catches but not overworked. Looked bamboozled by the crapness of Salah's touch before the scrambled goal.

David Raya

DR is still clear at the top of SSN’s Goalkeeper chart with 138 saves this season….
Never quite know how to take those kind of stats, maybe better to include the percentage of saves made from shots.

David Raya

Well, it’s only 3 and a bit per game, I suppose. He’s top of whatever it is they’re counting! He could always be average, and still make lots of saves behind a useless defence (Meslier)…
I know he wasn’t top last season, presumably because he missed a big chunk of it.

In today's, Monday 9th May, Times.

Yes like Real Madrid. We didn't sell our top players like Watkins etc. to rivals we sold them to PL clubs but now there's a problem.
No one in Span, that would need him, could afford what we would want for him

This was the question I put forward in one of the Phil Giles Q&As. Damned if I remember the answer but think it was along the lines of our model was going to be evolving

I’m delighted my Tamar reference has sparked such debate. I only remember him because I was always struck by how smiley he looked walking past the paddock on his way to the bench. He seemed happy to be there and approachable . Barely ever saw him play .
next week I will recall Craig Ravenscroft and see what S hits the Fan .

I only remember Tamar because he was the only goalkeeper i ever saw score an own goal from a goal kick. Fortunately it was a pre season friendly.

Against Wimbledon at GP. I was standing right behind it on the Ealing Road. I've got a vague recollection that the ref might have ruled it out though? I think we ended up losing 3-0.

Think Craig scored twice at Huddersfield (Leeds Road ground!) in 1993ish, I was 9 or 10 and probably taller than he was

Loved dear Fred Ryecraft. He did his best when he got a chance if Cakebread not available, but he did appear a few times in the team that won promotion from the 4th DIv. In 1962/63.

Played less than 40games for us, but just happens to be one of those players you remember.

Often took a bag into goal with him, which is believed to contain sweets!

Regarding Raya, this from today’s media -

"Manchester United are one of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya’s many admirers …..

Whether Ten Hag has the money to spend on a new goalkeeper will depend on a variety of factors, including Champions League qualification, how much cash United raise through sales, the ownership situation and what funds are earmarked for other positions, as well as the manager’s own priorities.

Ten Hag has prioritised the recruitment of a top-class centre-forward, …"

So that could be a double deal for both Raya and Toney to go to United!

Shouldn't he have awarded a corner?

I once saw Craig and Carl Hutchings stop in a clapped out old Escort to go into the Kebab takeaway next door to The Castle in St Mary's Road opposite Ealing Tech.

I think his answer to it (or a similar question another time) was that the evolution was in the level of club that would want to buy our players and that we’d see success as top/big 6 clubs being keen on them. I don’t think we’ve ever been strongly motivated by the negative approach of not selling to competitors.

Considering Toney's ban threat and Raya coming into the last 12 months of his contract, £80m for the pair would be fair ??

The pass to Brian Mbeumo that split the Villa defence and led to our goal was on the money and brilliantly executed - how short are peoples' memories!
Yes but he’s normally a lot more consistent. ? just not been living up to his normal v high standards with the ball IMHO.

David Raya

Will miss him when he goes. Pivotal part of our spine and influential on a lot of our tactics. This is not common really from a goalkeeper
