For those not familiar, this account specialises in stats of clubs outside the traditionally "biggest 6".

Interesting, when compared to other clubs, how we keep a lot of the shots faced outside of the box ??
I think this actually indicates the strength of the defence in front of Raya which forces teams to have shots from distance (not very good ones in the main), so they are 'easier' for the 'keeper to save.

First stage of the "Raya isn't really as important as we think" process to reconcile ourselves with his departure.......
?

Only kidding by the way, as I agree with you!!! ?

The 'keeper still has to save them, though  ! And the confidence between him and the defensive unit is always key to success. Actually, even if our number 1 next season is statistically as good as David, there will be still differences as each player will have their own way of playing and integrating with the defenders.

Emiliano Martinez is ready to leave Aston Villa, each of Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea teams are interested wondering if this will effect our chances of getting a good fee for david
Nowhere near as good with his feet as David is, won't be wanted by Ten Haag. Hard to comment on the other two without a manager; would be a gamble to buy without knowing he'd fit new manager's style, especially for Chelsea.
Martinez may be a backup to whoever can't get David, so could help the price if anything

Interesting that all the other teams have 2 or more keeps in that list. May be different if a number for each team.

David Raya

He seems to be way ahead on saving shots from outside the penalty area. Perhaps, as a team, we are content for teams to be shooting from distance?
I think we can handle outside the box shots better this season.

Last season it felt like almost every goal we conceded was a “worldie” although obviously Raya was injured for a big chunk of the season and we had dodgy keepers in his place…

David Raya

If he was auditioning for one of his future employers he did a grand job :) and added an extra £10m on his price tag.

I have accepted he will leave this summer and he will be a big loss but think he deserves a chance at European football and could get into any of the top clubs in the league.

Even Thomas said in the after match interview that none of the squad was for sale this summer except Raya.

Captain v Spurs. How often has Raya worn the armband for us? Captaincy doesn’t seem to be marked on the line-up listings these days.

David Raya

(Almost definitely) signing off his time with us by captaining the side to a clean sheet vs Man City and by playing a crucial part in the winning goal with a clever pass to Schade from the free-kick.

Saman and Pontus got the farewells post-match but I hope he felt the love from the crowd today too.

David Raya

No doubt we’ll miss him. Has continued to improve each season and good enough to be playing in the Champions League.

but I’ve no doubt Flekken will be a decent replacement.

I have some doubt. Our last three goalkeeper replacements have not been successful ?

Lossl was an emergency so I’m not going to count him. Strakosha has spent too much time on the treatment tabe but I’m not going to judge him on one mistake against Benrahma. Not sure he’ll stay to be 2nd choice though.
We did pick up Matthew Cox in the same period and he’s going to be an England keeper one day!

Don’t forget Fernandez and I don’t mean of the Tamar variety

What’s penis size got to do with it?

He fits us like a glove and vice versa.
Maybe the grass really isn’t greener.

I feel we've learned a lot from that period as a club. Flekken seems more ready to go in terms of age, experience and underlining stats (being similar to DR).

We are signing the Bundesliga Golden Glove winner, so that's say to me he is a good GK with presence to control & shape his defence in front.

Alvaro unfortunately was younger, less experienced and thrown in half way through a first PL season for most of the squad. A full pre-season with Flekken, in an establishing PL squad will be a vastly difference experience for all.

Back to DR, what can you say? He's been amazing for us, despite some trepidation at the start of his career, and he's grown into one of the PLs best GKs.

He deserves a shot at the bigger time, so wish him well and look forward to seeing him back next season (with Utd I suspect).

But not for £20M.

Good post though.

Sadly* the failure of Chelsea and Spuds to make Europe means that the options are fewer. Depends if DR is prepared to take a chance on one of them getting back into the top 4 next season, but I’d say both have some ground to make up. So probably less chance of a bidding war unfortunately as United may be the only club that meets Raya’s expectations.

*sadly in that it may effect the money we get. I’m happy as Larry that both teams finished where they did, especially as we’re the best ******* club in West London ?

David Raya

Sorry still don’t get it . Been there before keep reading Raya deserves a shot at the big time. We’ve just finished top ten we are Premier League we are looking to improve why does he need to go. New contract pay rise ok he could get more else where but Chelsea below us Spurs could be no guarantee where anyone ends up so why does he not stay and see us improve. Perhaps we could win a cup next year . If it’s all about the money I get it but let’s see if he goes to Man U and sit on the bench. Nothing against him just don’t agree with comments about us. Best league in the world and we are competitive let’s not be big time but don’t put us down.

No one is putting us down?

We aren't a top six side. Just because Chelsea finished below us this season, do you expect that to happen next season?

As for United, they're a huge global brand and a top four side. Even when they've finished outside the top four I think most fans would likely put them up there every season in their predictions.

Spurs would be the odd one, because they've also not qualified for Europe, but let's face it, there is expectation there it won't be long before they're back.

Maybe listen to De Zerbi’s interview after Saturdays game and you might get it

Get what you’re saying of course and yes to get the money for him will beneficial long term. When was the last time Spurs won anything Chelsea could easily bounce back but are in a right mess. What I was getting at the comments he deserves a shot at the big time. We are not going to Halifax anymore and yes we are miles behind Man U but surely we don’t want to end up like Southampton.

David Raya

In some ways, David going to one of the big 6 clubs would be a seminal moment for us as a club. if we can prove to prospective players that not only are we are an established EPL club but the richest clubs in the world will buy our players, our potential to recruit some of the best young talent in the world increases massively.

Well, he's not signing a contract so we can either call him an ungrateful money-grabbing whatnot or wish him well for the future.
Most are going for the latter.

I think I see what you’re saying. He could go to quite a few places and just earn more money. The clubs that offer him no.1 status AND be higher in the league are much fewer.

He could see out the final year of his contract and see how we progress.

Seems like he’s gone though seeing as we’ve signed a replacement already.

David Raya

I was trying to read his body language after Sunday's game and he didn't give much away or display much emotion at all. Mind you last year when Eriksen was on the pitch with his wife and kids I thought fir a moment he might be staying with us. I think we've seen the last of David in a Bees shirt with his desire to leave. Don't really care where he goes as long as we get the cash.

I think the point is that a football career is very short and can be curtailed at any time (see Alan Judge) so if you have an opportunity to play for one of the very top clubs, then it’s a bit of a no brainer (both career wise and financially). It’s also a positive for the club in that it shows potential targets we can help players up to the very top level.

Exactly. He's given us 4 great years. Cost £2m, likely to go for somewhere north of £25m. Deserves his big payday and shot at the biggest of the big time.

Agree, it's in the DNA of the club and will help us continue to attract young talented players when there is interest from other clubs. This process has been very clear now for 10 years or more it's not going to change now we are in the PL.

Also no guarantee new Spurs manager & Pochettino will rate DR as highly as he is here & also the pressure will be ramped up at those clubs.A large transfer fee & entitled fans could mean a few mistakes & he will be bench warming.
A lot of ex Bees have found the grass is'nt greener elsewhere.

That’s where I’m coming from Steve Phillips told Neal Maupay exactly that a few years back at the end of season. Yes he’s looking in hindsight but we’d give our right arm to wear the red and white and get a million for it. Yes I know it’s naive and still gutted Sinton left us but now we are in the top league hoped he’d stay. Rayas always given his best but for now chuffed Ethan’s staying so I’ll look forward to that and seeing DR’s replacement!

Makes the the Opta stats team of the season

David Raya (Brentford)

One of only four players to play every minute of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign, Brentford goalkeeper David Raya was a huge part of the Bees' highest top-flight finish since 1938.

The Spaniard made the most saves of any goalkeeper (154) and had the best save percentage (77%) of any goalkeeper to play at least five times across the campaign.

Raya's ability to play long passes has also suited Brentford, who played the most long passes of any Premier League side in 2022-23. Raya completed 410 long passes, the most by a goalkeeper in a season since 2017-18 (Jonas Lossl, 420 for Huddersfield).

While I love your confidence he could easily be playing Champions League next season and with a good campaign be first choice keeper for Spain in the Euros. We can’t guarantee that anytime soon.

but just think of the context…a Bees player for the past 4 seasons could be going to a top CL team! It’s amazing, especially considering the last first team keeper we sold went to Bristol City!

Which Champions League team could he easily be playing for?

It would have to be abroad because City, Arsenal and Newcastle have settled first choice keepers, and Utd’s is a bit wobbly but there’s no guarantee a new keeper would walk straight in and take over.

He’s a great keeper but I don’t see where he goes that’s a significant step up and he gets regular first team appearances.

He could earn more money at lots of clubs, but Chelsea and Spurs are the only ones where he could be the main man and they’re not even in Europe next season.
