David Webb

Former manager, David Webb, has been appointed assistant manager back at Southend - his fourth spell there.

It would be a close run poll between Webb, Noades (as our manager not owner) and Butcher as to who was our least popular manager post war. I suspect Webb would win hands down followed by Butcher.

At least Noades did take us 'up' when he was our self-appointed boss.

David Webb

W£bb and Noad£s are the scum! Butcher was just incompetant, he didnt try to feck us over like the other two, he is just a bad manager.

David Webb

I can only echo the setiment on another thread that Bees fans should never forget what Webb did to this club. I can't think of him as just a manager as all he did to our club comes to mind whenever his name is mentioned.
Butcher was inept, and,as you say Noades at least got us up.

This has added more than a bit of spice to the league game at Roots Hall in a couple of weeks - can't wait to give the w.a.nker a lot of grief

David Webb

Word of advice, Shrimpers, don't let him see the cheque book!

David Webb

I don't recall W£bb being that unpopular until he became Chief Executive?
Day's of David W£bb's Barmby army still play back in my head :(

It was Webb who introduced Mr. Noades to BFC.
The start of all our problems.
Webb played a major part in trying to destroy our club
He's a very bad boy:nono:

That's because he was sneeky little two faced sh*t. We thought he was the best thing for our club. But once he knew that Lange wanted to sell up. We££ just saw the £££ signs. Then, as mentioned above, he sold out to Noades.

:imwith:

you are clearly not a brentford fan putting Butcher in the same league as those parasites.

My thoughts exactly. Hate the ground and the town and a fairly sh*te journey on a Tuesday night, but most certainly not going to miss this one now!

David Webb

that was great when he came back for southend and everyone went in the braemar and webb was spitting at us and throwing coins etc. a true european night of glory.

:zzzzz:

David Webb

Thats Southend finished then... :(

David Webb

Surely he's missed the christmas cracker selling window

I thought that Webb had a cut of the transfers before Lange left as well, hence selling loads of our players.

I HATE that man, as much as Noades. If you look at their records with the various clubs they've been involved in, it tells it's own story.

Yes I am aware of all that, but the original post was about him being one of the least popular managers.

However that status that was only achieved retrospectively when he realised he could make money by asset stripping the club.

EDIT: Come to think of it he did sell Nicky Forster at a crucial time whilst manager which ****ed our chances of going up. OK I agree!

David Webb

i suggest the manager wears a dagger proof vest as i suspect webb will 'ave 'im.

problem is whilst i don't wish gillingham or sarfend well, they are at least neo-local derbies for us ---- so i suppose best that they stay up? otherwise more trips up north.

but back to the thread.....

Palace, Reading, Posh, Bournemouth all moving in to replace them possibly, so happy to  bye-bye to two odious teams.

I was informed that he was on 25% of deals, the devious f cking bas turd, the c unt that really started the rot at GP. To think that "we" hoped he didn't go to Soton.....if only:rolleyes:

I hope he helps take those c unts to the conference they deserve each other.

He summed up his love for this club by turning his back on us at Wembley against Crewe haven't forgiven him for that moment, to think that when I was 10 and he scored for my then second team Chelsea in the cup final I thought he was great, now I think he is SCUM and always will be in my eyes

Oh by the way I don't like David We££:(

David Webb

He was a devious bastard but not in the Noades league. If he had stuck to just being a manager it could have been different and the 1995 side was one of the best I have seen at GP. His activities in the 96/97 season were the start of the rot, selling Forster etc. and when he took over the club it all went wrong. Butcher was just inept, it is Noades who is the real culprit for our present state.

David Webb

It's a cunning plan by Southend to get more Brentford fans to the game.

David Webb

Lange offered Webb the sell on percentages to enable him to buy the club. That is why he rejected the southampton job. He had a plan. The shame was that he was a very good manager and will be remembered for his greed, sabotaging his own team for profit. In those five years he bought, Ashby, Grainger, Smugger, Asaba, Forster, Taylor (noades got Taylor profit). He made a few bad signing, Metcalfe etc, but he didnt mind as the bad ones were on peanuts and didn't cost him directly. The only thing that seems a contradiction was paying Paul Davis massive money, but We££ probably used him as a pawn, to make the club look cash straped.

I don't belive that to be the case, I'm fairly certain he had sell-on percentages whenhe first joined Brentford in 1993. You are certainly correct in that Lange and Webb had a co-ordinated plan for the latter to get the debt down and buy Brentford. The Davis signing was a ricket, nothing else.

I thought he left on a free, because he didn't want to play in the bottom league?

David Webb

I thought he left on a free, because he didn't want to play in the bottom league?

Taylor was sold by Noades for £400k and with Cullip (after a few weeks) and Hutchins also sold for £50k and £135k Noades started his first season with a debt free club and banked the fat end of £600k from player sales in short order. Noades had made an offer to Taylor and seemingly didn't want him to go but the player wanted away.

If you had just bought a club for around £850k to start a League Two campaign wouldn't you love it to be with a debt free club, an unmortgaged stadium (this is what he got from Webb) and £600k in the bank from early player sales.

David Webb

I thought we got about £100k for him, as I think it was just before Bosman rule came in.

To give a fair appraisal of Webb, you perhaps have to separate the team-building and talent-spotting from the financial stuff. On the former, he was a good manager, who built a team that was unlucky not to get promoted. But on the latter, his dealings left a lot to be desired - I can't be bothered to type "allegedly" as often as I'd need to if I tried to go into detail

i agree he was a good football manager.

David Webb

Imo, Webb was the start of the huge problems for this club. He was a reasonably good football manager but he took an enormous amount of money from the club in cuts of xfer fees as well as the money he made out of selling the club.

I will not forgive him for:

Telling us that all the Asaba money would be re-invested in new players

Setting up Eddie May & Clive Walker - one of my most embarrasing moments in watching the Bees was May's long walk along the touchline after we'd lost to Carlisle. He wasn't my choice as manager but he really did not have a chance of succeeding

Videoing home fans in a most sinister way

Only turning up for one game while he was CEO - what was he doing for the salary he was taking from the club? - & in due course leaving Swaisland to face the fans. At least Swaisland had the guts to come to the games.

And that's just for starters!

If he'd said, I'm hear to sell the club as a debt free, going concern for the best offer I can get, I would have disliked him intensely but at least it would have been honest.

David Webb

Ghost,

I wondered what it was all about too! To have the plods walking slowly down the New Road touchline at half-time videoing a completely placid crowd was very unnerving. To not be allowed to exit New Rd via Ealing Rd on Webb's instructions was also strange - it was a completely normal egress at that time.

Webb was imo, a reasonably good football manager, & credit is due to him for signing & selling on some of the players mentioned above. However all those players cost substantial money barring Asaba & he was lucky to have that money to spend. His 'free' signings were much less successful - think of Myall, Spencer, Williams x 2, Benjamin, Martin, Hooker, Metcalf, Thompson, Wormull - & that's just off the top of my head!

I've said it elsewhere before, but it really sticks in my throat now remembering that ovation he got when he'd just turned down Southampton. As you say, if only.

David Webb

I can never forgive him for selling Forster and Grainger to our promotion rivals. The bloke is a class 1 bellend, to553r, parasite and any other words which you feel like adding.
I really hope Southend do a double relegation and end up with Loo Town.

Wasn't there a clutch of awful centrehalves in there as well (David Greene and a couple of others..?)

And I can still see Metcalf putting a shot 10yds over the brook road goal from about 3 yds out. :(

Thanks abee, I must have developed a selective memory!

David Webb

Webb was an amazing appointment at the time IMO. We needed a manager and he had just been shafted by Chelsea (all from memory), I remember pissing my undies in excitement when he was announced as our new man. The football was mostly good, he let Terry Evans go too soon and by the end we had bottled some good chances to go up. I liked him as our manager, he came across as a crafty manager who IMO gave us good PR when interviewed on the box. It's a shame he was hiding the fact that he was such a fecking snake, the £ signs obviously got to him as I always believed that he had genuine feelings towards our club. He was a 100%er, I saw him play in a charity game at Loftus Road on that plastic pitch, he went in for a slide tackle and took all the skin off his knee, later he did the same to the other knee when most would have simply left it after the first experience. Lack of brains or loads of guts? I think the latter and I would prefer to have been left with good thoughts about a bod who gave us many good times, however ........

yes.

David Webb

I had to deal with him throughout the 1995-6 and 96-7 seasons as I was managing Ericsson's sponsorship of the club .

The MD of Ericsson, myslef and DW used to meet for regular planning and review meetings where we would be told of his plans for the club and team.

Let's just say that Steve Slade on loan from QPR was not quite the replacement for Nicky Forster that we had been led to expect!

I used to pull my jumper over my head. For all Webb's dodgy dealing the Ricky Reina transfer was the strangest. Wasn't it an old mate of Webb's who owned Dover and we paid £50,000 (?) for a player who was already crocked? Perhaps I'm wrong and it was all above-board. They should have been videoing Reina on the pitch because I'm sure we bought Dover's coach driver by mistake.

Mind you, he did manage to score a goal (at Brighton?) which was more than Murray Jones did, and he cost less so that makes him a bargain in my book :)
