Dwain Chambers

How do you view his situation?

Should be banned for life, that's it, admitted you knew what you were doing and take the consequences

OR

Deserves a second chance, should not be a scapegoat for the sports problem. He's served his time, let's move on.

IMHO, can see both sides but I'd give him a chance ...

Dwain Chambers

Drugged up or not he's a talented runner. He got his suspension and did it so we'd be cutting off our nose to spite our face if we banned him

Dwain Chambers

He's very, very talented. Doesn't have a trainer at present either, is doing his training alone in a park

Dwain Chambers

.............banned for life....................that is a deterrent...........................

Dwain Chambers

Banned for life. He sets an extremely bad example to kids. I don't want this geezer running in the Olympics for my country.

He's not a scapegoat, he's a cheat.

He is claiming to be a victim, but he himself has made the situation.

That aside, the British Althetics bods have shot themselves in the foot by only having a 2 year ban, thus leasving themselves open for the ensuing circus once the person has served a ban. They should have minimum 5 year, be tested throughout, unles the retire. If, at the end of the ban, they are able to be competative, they should be given a chance.

They should also co-operate in any investigation. It seems that an athelete can get a ban but there is no investigation into the supply chain. He/she gets the drugs from somewhere whether it be a trainer or pusher on the inside. Find them and shut them down.

If they don't co-operate, then they have a life ban.

Bloody hell you're tough Chapman. Next you will be agreeing with 3 points for 37mph down the A30 at Sunnindgale at 10.50pm!:(

ps. since when has this become your country? :fishing:

And footballers do?

Anyway, Athletics is like Tennis, best forgotten, nobody cares because it's run by self important old tossers in blazers and we never win anything!

Dwain Chambers

I was inclining towards sympathy for him till I heard him interviewed at the weekend, boasting of how his notoriety was giving athletics publicity (that was how I interpreted his remarks about him being good for athletics before and again now)

I don't think it should always be a life ban - there are borderline cases - but he was caught bang to rights for sustained misuse

Dwain Chambers

i would say ban him for life and so would anyone else who saw his unrepentant attitude on INSIDE SPORT on the bbc the other week. however, i guess a 2 year ban is just that.

ps - GET THE F**HAM OUT OUR CLUB !!!!!!!

Same goes. Anyone caught taking drugs in football should be kicked out for life too.

He won't be running in the Olympics thanks to BOA rules which is one saving grace.

Dwain Chambers

The rules should have seen him banned for life, particularly given how brazen he was. But the rules don't do that. So it's not really cricket to ban him for life.

Change the rules

The IOC rules ban him for life, so he will never run in the Olympics.

Until other governing bodies come into line with the IOC, you will not stop situations like this happening.

It would seem that Dwayne will be 'NFI' to many of the 'invitation' events that are staged throughout the year in this country.

Dwain Chambers

He has done the crime in cheating and got caught and punished, according to the rules at the time.
He has now served that punishment so should be allowed a second chance.

The root problem in all this, in my opinion, is the rules are not strong enough.
The rule should be any sportperson who has been caught knowingly taking performace enhancing drugs should receive an automatic lifetime ban. This ruling would stop any situations like this happening again.

Dwain Chambers

He shouldn't be allowed a second chance imo. That would give the message that it's ok to cheat because you'll get another chance after your ban. The worry then is that everyone would give it a go.

Athletics has got a massive credibility problem and should adopt a zero telerance approach to anyone caught using drugs.

Are you going all right wing on us? :D

Perhaps we should adopt a zero tollerance, no second chance policy in our society full stop :fishing: ;)

Dwain Chambers

being banned from the Olympics will hurt him a lot, he gets a 2nd chance from me as it's his livelihood just like a driver who gets done for DD he gets his license back after a certain time so he can earn a living..

Perhaps he should of thought of that before he took them. No sympathy from me .

Dwain Chambers

The bloke has achieved fame, fortune and now infamy from long term cheating. Why should he get a second chance?

He hasn't shown any remorse, he comes over as if he's a victim, no funding, has to pay to train etc, whose fault is that?

How much of the funding he received fraudulently has he actually paid back?

The rules should be universal so that anyone caught whose guilt is proved beyond doubt(as he was) is a life ban.

Then anyone considering knows and has absolutley no argument or mitigating circumstances. It would certainly deter raw youngsters from dabbling if they were really dedicated.

He is banned for life from the Olympics, but he can still run in the World Championships.

I understand people feelings but there is a loop hole where he is allowed to run again... they should close it totally to be honest as he is a very lucky man..

Dwain Chambers

Different governing bodies deliver different rules. How ironic the Olympic movement, riddled with corruption, takes such a hard line on drug cheats.

Dwain Chambers

he's served his punishment so he should be allowed to compete at whatever level he can. those are the rules as it stands.
BUT imho i think the rules should be changed, drugs and your out for life. competitive sport is only truly competitive when each contender starts on a even field. lose that, and you lose all the spirit and passion that goes with it.

Dwain Chambers

When he was found guilty he wilfully admitted using drugs for a number years.

No. He admitted using THG from 2002 till August 2003.

The IOC rules ban him for life, so he will never run in the Olympics.

I believe it is the BOA rules that ban him, not the IOC. The quicker other authorities take this line, the better. Drug bans should be put back to 4 years.

Stupid thing is, Chambers isn't the first person to come back from a doping. ban. The authorities have had several chances to put strong rules in place but have failed to do so, for whatever reason.

Personally, I do not feel he should be running. This wasn't a disputed elevated Nandrolone level case. He blatantly took a drug specially designed to be untraceable by drug tests. (on the flip side, so did some of his peers)

Dwain Chambers

I believe he should come back. Whats so different to the other cases who were reprived such as the 400m runner who missed 3 drug tests including one when she was within easy travelling distance.

Athletics is being two faced.

Not really.

The system is that they will arrive where they believe you should be and wait for a period of time, then leave. Ohurugu was doing a school visit. It the US, they will tell contact you and tell you they are waiting. In the UK, they do not.
Ohurugu passed tests the week before and the week after the third one whe missed.

Chambers deliberately took a drug specifically designed to be undetectable in drugs tests. It wasn't until someone sent a vial of THG to the authorities, that they became aware it even existed, therefore were able to design a test to pick it up.

They are not the same thing.

However, you are correct in the fact that they have never stopped people returning from drugs bans from competing before, so shouldn't do so now.

Dwain Chambers

I was inclining towards sympathy for him till I heard him interviewed at the weekend, boasting of how his notoriety was giving athletics publicity (that was how I interpreted his remarks about him being good for athletics before and again now)

If you watch the heats of athletics events at major championships on TV (not many do nowadays), you'll see fewer occupied seats than you would at an Orient reserve match. People are no longer interested in athletics thanks to people like Chambers, it's viewed as a dirty sport. The decline probably started with the final of the mens 100m at the Seoul Olympics where there were only 3 clean runners in the final, none of whom made the top 3 - http://observer.guardian.co.uk/osm/story/0,6903,1270863,00.html. The best of the clean runners (Calvin Smith) finished 4th. Why bother watching something determined by who has the best chemist?

Dwain Chambers

I liked Chambers, he was a decent chap who came across as a guy who put the hours in and enjoyed his luck in life. His interviews sounded I was listening to a humble man who was getiing close to the world's best without the advantages they seemed to have overseas. I always thought he beefed up too much and now realise he was just a cheating sh*t and a disgrace to the sport. I use to really enjoy athletics and know all of our athletes and have a a fair idea of who was coming through, because of Chambers, Jones and co I have no interest or idea about the sport anymore.

Dwain Chambers

I don't feel for Chambers, because he cheated. I have no doubt he is talented, but there are young athletes who would have looked up to Chambers, and it sets the wrong example.
What interested me is that Chambers said that you cannot be the best runner in the world if you don't take steroids, so that sends out a terribly poor message to the rest of the sport.
Chambers has not been tested for 2 years, and has been playing American Football to keep up his fitness, and there are no drug tests in that particular sport. Who is to say that he is still not taking steroids?
Also, what about Carl Burscough(?) the shotputter? Isn't he allowed to go with the full backing of UK Athletics?

I think they will be checking that he is not taking steroids now (at least those that can be detected... that applies to all athletes), but I don't know how long they stay in the system, so he could presumably have taken them for part of his time outside athletics; I'm not saying he has, but there wouldn't have been checks.

Shot-putter is, I think, Myerscough (spelling?), who has represented UK since his ban, but is banned from Olympics - I think he was relatively unknown before his ban (possibly it was while at college in US?)

Athletics will always have a problem with the drugs labs trying to stay one step ahead of the testers. Its main appeal (for me) - that it is a straight test of who runs fastest, jumps/throws fastest without any need for subjective decisions by officials - perhaps also means that it is a sport where those who would cheat think there is most to gain by boosting their natural physique

Dwain Chambers

chambers is my hero and role model. i will have to take drugs now.

Dwain Chambers

He should be allowed in, but should start a few metres back, from the rest, as a punishment.

Dwain Chambers

he looks likes he is on steriods now
