you can't smoke in a pub but you can go out into the garden and smoke. so surely people should be able to smoke on the braemar forecourt?

Farrar

You can smoke on the forecourt, there is no law against it so in theory
the club having accepted your money cant do a thing about it. The scary thing is that the poeople who passed this draconian law have exempted themselves which is exactly what the club will try to do

Farrar

The forecourt is private property and the owners of it can choose not to allow smoking if they so wish.

The law against smoking in public places is not draconian.

Farrar

Not true if Scotland is anything to go by. My company's offices outside Glasgow have chosen to ban smoking on its entire site, in and out, except in a small shelter as they are entitled to do. Employees can smoke in their cars in the car park unless they are provided with company cars.

arent we all lemmings,1984 has arrived with the masters exempting themselves from the laws they pass on us. I remember going to football being just that,a day out for the working man to relax and enjoy. I wont accept this and just lie down like the masses so it looks like another lost supporter. I will be watching to see who creeps out for a cig,it will be fun. Regardless of what anyones views on here are about me,I am a Bees nut and their treatment of supporters is a disgrace:wave:

Are you arguing against the smoking ban which you won't change or the clubs reaction to your complaint?

It's also illegal to hunt foxes with hounds within Griffin Park - shall we blame BFC for meekly allowing this disgraceful erosion of our rights?

Spot the deliberate mistake.

Oh and you might find that for places like restaurant forecourts and beer gardens the ban will be there too, because that's still a place of work for the staff and non-smokers shouldn't be confined to sitting indoors all the time and those areas are defined as 'the premises' under licensing laws. Smokers may find it hard to believe, but it's really ****ing sh*t when you're sitting somewhere on a nice sunny day eating something you've paid upwards of 20 quid for and someone nearby decides to light up and waft cancer all over you. Even sitting outside with someone smoking nearby, it gets in your hair and clothes and really smells. Iirc smokers make up 21% of the population, so if there was a referendum on it (my ideal solution to all political problems that involve the public) smokers would not win. Don't take it personally, because it isn't, just saying like.

Now can we get back to the topic which was that the club hasn't properly answered your enquiry? As a non-smoker I'm just as interested as moribee as to what exactly is happening, especially as in New Road it's clearly painted 'No Smoking' on the pylons but at 15:00 alternate Saturdays cigar smoke wafts across without fail.

am arguing against the clubs reaction, there is always ways round having a cig.The fact is I was told that staff would go out for a cig,as a season ticket holder there should be no problem in me or any other season ticket holder going out for a cigarette. If there was a coffee shop nearer than albany parade I would go out for a coffee at half time too cos there sure isnt anywhere to get a coffee in the ground which is of reasonable quality. I dont drink nowdays so being expelled from the bar didnt worry me.
Look at end of day if the club no longer wants me what can i do or say,but the hypocrisy of it all stinks and the way after a life time the sh*t way they view you. I exempt JG from this criticism, every one else ran away, dodged the issue and by time I put my season tkt form in were lying to me.
Wish some of the goodie goodies on here had been in Baghdad on the first night of bombing then they might realise what a health risk is.
As I have already said the people who passed this law exempted themselves from it and that is what the club will do as well. quite honestly i am speechless that going to football has turned into a palm sunday church visit:sad:

Arh, The club had a "No Smoking Section" in the New Road, which no body used (well it was always the least populated area of the ground) so in there wisdom (or Roy Kings) its was decide to designate the seating areas in the whole of the Breamar and the Brook Road Upper as no Smoking.

When the club moved the no smoking area they forgot to paint over the signs in the New Road. I say "move" becuase they didnt list the part of the New Road in the Communiations listing the No Smoking areas that were issued at the time. In truth our esteemed stadium manager probably didnt know that it even existed.

If the 20% of the poulation decided that it was a bit much not being officially allowed to smoke in the open areas of the ground such as the Braemar Road forecourt and ceased to go, Would the other 80% moan about having to pay 20% more to get in? £24 for a seat, and £22 to stand is a lot of money to have to pay for the privledge.

Farrar

As a smoker for the last 38 years and a pipe smoker to boot ( so perhaps of even greater annoyance to other fans) I actually see no problem with being unable to smoke in any area of the ground. To let supporters out of the ground would, I imagine, necessitate employiong more stewards to control the gate and be an additional cost. Bearing in mind we are talking a max of 3 hours is it really such a problem???

Given the nature of an area like Brentford, I'd have thought the proportion of smokers is higher there, but that's just supposition. Personally, I see no real problem with designating an area behind the stands and away from the 'food' areas for people to go at half time if they're so desperate for a cig that it can't wait 1 1/2 hours, although most matches at BFC require more than a fag to calm you down. I just don't want people lighting up in my face, that's all. For the most part, they don't, it's the relatively few cigar or chain smokers that cause the problem. Moribee sounds like he doesn't really care about not smoking during the match, but while I'm in full support of the ban I'm also in support of him and others being designated an area outside the stands, away from the 'food' but within the ground that they can happily go and have a half-time puff without incurring extra stewarding costs and irritating other supporters and residents.

The problem is that anywhere where stewards or other employees may have to go would need to be no smoking and I don't think the police would allow BFC to have a steward free zone.

And if the club's not prepared to let back in anyone who goes out, as already stated, then that defines out the policy, no? Now all they have to do is communicate it politely and formally and people can make their own decisions based on that. Simple really, I don't know why things are so difficult. When people become managers, are they given lobotomies?

What about the stewards that smoke of which there are plenty:idea:

Farrar

The law applies to everyone, including stewards.

I think people on this thread are mixing up several issues:

  • The no-smoking law itself
  • The fact that the club is implementing the new law in a way recommended by the Football League
  • Whether or not rude emails have been sent between moribee and Stuart Farrar

Farrar

I'd imagine that its also illegal to hunt foxes with hounds anywhere in Brentford, let alone GP...

What will happen if I employ a serf to hold my ciggie outside the forecourt gates and fashion myself some sort of extendable device with which to inhale my fix??

Farrar

If there are people like that, they aren't like me, as I wouldn't want that at all. I suspect that you don't know me very well, or are confusing me with someone else.

just basing it on your previous 11,000 posts mate. ;) ;) ;) ;) rofl rofl

This is wrong. Otherwise you wouldnt be able to smoke in the street beause of Traffic wardens and road sweepers

Farrar

I think the confusion is coming from the law as its understood saying it bans smoking in enclosed public spaces. The problem is what the definition of enclosed public spaces actually is. It's got nothing to do with a place of work. However, lots of companies are enforcing a smoke ban in semi-outdoor areas that they own as well. South West Trains are banning smoking on all stations, even though it could very easily be argued that most of them are outdoors. As far as I know, the law bans smoking in indoor public places only, the outdoor or semi-outdoor bits are being done at the discretion of the company. So, again, what's the club's actual policy? We should have an answer in the next 10 days anyway.
Moribee: Anything further and have you approached PG about it? He seems to be a man who gets the job done.

Farrar

the law states no smoking in any structure with two or more sides

so many bus shelters are now built with just a back and roof Thats ok to smoke in

but a back, roof and one side thats a no smoking area

so most stands have a back and two sides so thats a no smoking area but the forecourt is a open space and smoking will NOT be illegal but it may breech the clubs own policy but dont let them tell you its against the law!!

Farrar

This ban is ridiculous- load music in a but 'annoys me on a night out', but I choose to go to a pub without loud music. If you don't like smoke, don't go to smokey pubs. It's all about consent, ladies and gentlemen. It's this illiberal government who think that you can legislate away harm. You can't legislate away harm from passove smoking just as you can't legislate away asthma from car exhaust fumes or skydivers' parachutes not opening.

What the government should do is to regulate businesses to take 'reasonable steps to minimise harm' by having a minimum standard of ventilation in pubs and clubs. I am sure that Brentford's open air would more than qualify.

Now Edmudo and Hazel Blears and co. can go back to trying to ape the Tories in seeing who can be the harshest nanny of all.

Farrar

Please don't class me with that odious woman whose head is stuck up Tony Blair's arse. Or suggest that I want to ape the Tories.

In fact since you clearly haven't got a ****ing clue about my opinions, I suggest you stop making ridiculous claims about them.

Farrar

For what it's worth, I was advised by a BFC Director (On the day the walkers got back to GP) that it was a Football League Ruling that has Grounds in total classified as non smoking areas this coming season.

The law as it will stand on July 1st "may/may not" allow smoking in the forecourt but the Football League are stipulating to Clubs that all areas are to be deemed non smoking so the law itself is overuled by the Football League's dictate (As I understand it)

Or something different of course.

It's absolute b***ocks to talk about the government trying to legislate away harm. They are clearly allowing you and other smokers to continue harming yourself. They haven't banned smoking outright, have they? What they have done is to offer me, a non-smoker, and other people like me some protection from the consequences of your actions.

A minimum standard for air conditioning is not going to offer sufficient protection to members of staff who are exposed to smoke for several hours a day, week in, week out. It doesn't work sufficiently well.

Why should I stop going to pubs, clubs and restaurants because the amount of cigarette smoke I am expected to ingest ruins my evening? Strange thought it may sound to you, I don't want to end the evening with my eyes stinging and my clothes and hair stinking of cigarettes. Smokers like many car drivers are very quick to assert their "rights" though I have yet to see the worldwide charter that sets out your inalienable right to light up right next to me and to hell with whether I like it.

If Brentford Football Club decide that it's going to be a non-smoking Club then good on them as far as I am concerned. I don't care whether it's legislation or Football League guidance.

The only thing that sounds off to me (assuming it is correct) is that there will be no pass out system for those who want to smoke outside in the street and then come back into the ground. I don't believe that the Club canvassed opinions of the local residents about this though I may be wrong. If the locals don't want lots of cigarette butts outside their houses, I think they probably should go and talk to the 4 relevant pub landlords first.

Farrar

Why would it cost much to have your hand stamped... or be given a paper ticket to be returned to a steward upon re-entry... so you can recycle the paper tickets :computer:

Farrar

Who should fund the cost of a pass-out system?

The Club. How expensive can this be? A PC and a laminator and you're away. We've got stewards hanging around the place every match day. Put a couple on the gates at half-time to let people in and out.

To set the record straight ? this is the wording of the rules as per the official web site on May the 8th.

"In conformity to government legislation and The Football League policy, Brentford Football Club will introduce a 'smoke free' policy on 1st July this year. Consequently, smoking will not be permitted throughout the stadium confines from this date onwards."

Now to me the Stadium confines are within the stands excluding the various forecourts

For what it counts that is the way they are treating it at Lords I understand.

...........my interpretation of that is that it includes forecourts etc.....anything within the 'four walls' of the ground I would imagine would be classed as 'throughout the stadium confines'..........and I make the point as a previous smoker (the worst kind of the lot, so I'm reliably informed - by my good lady)......
