Be fair, the points are awarded based on your opponents, and the type of game you played. Reason why England and other European nations tend to drop at some points in the year without playing and countries from other continents rise as they played competitive games compared to our friendlies and vice versa.
Also, European nations seem to carry much more weight in the points so Wales beating/drawing against other European nations actually would give them more points than say Australia beating constantly any of their opponents, or Japan, and even some of the Africans. Europe, though, only carry more points as they are generally harder to beat.

As we have all worked out, the rankings is a load of tosh and we been saying that for years anyway.

The fact is, if you'd beaten Israel you'd be up to 4th.

So that means any of Brazil, Germany, France, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Italy etc only 3 of them would be supposedly better than Bales?

Not a chance.

You've only risen (and fair play to beating Belgium) because the wins you did obtain were against fellow minnows and thus get more points than if you were a top ranked team playing the same teams. For instance, a win against San Marino for you guys 12 months ago would have generated more points than if England beat them a few days earlier/after. We won both our games this international weekend, whereas you didn't - but you got more points... We also only played 1 decent team - Switzerland. San Marino actually loses nations points.

Must admit I'm getting fed up with this Wales 'love-in'…… and how incredible it is that they've qualified.....looks like they'll finish runners up in the group ....any other tournament they'd have been in the play offs.....and hopefully ****ed up as usual.. (NI have done brilliantly though)

This is how f@&£ed up the rankings are.....

Cape Verde Islands are 32nd, above the likes of USA, Denmark, Greece, Poland and even the Republic of Ireland (and Scotland). Scotland are even ahead of Sweden who are 45th.

how do you know that Cape Verde don't deserve to be that high and aren't better than those teams though :suspect:
even the Faroes beat Greece, so it's not a surprise that they are low!

why not? i know sh*t-all about them, they might have 11 dynamite prospects for all i or you know. how can you say they don't justify their place if you don't know anything about them?

I remember losing a bet many months ago where they played Portugal and won 2-0 but Portugal played a mixture of 2nd and 3rd string players and finished the match with 10 men.

They're unbeaten in 5 matches this season including a 7-1 win over another minnow in Sao Tome e Principe but seriously, they're not exactly playing big nations. They've also only played 5 matches. The points earned in so few matches work in their favour with earning more due to averages.

Romania benefited for the 2018 Qualifier to become a seeded team by playing just playing 1 friendly.

The rankings are so mismatched. Brazil dropped to 22nd because the matches they did play were only friendlies leading up to the WC 2014.

Cape Verde, strong Portuguese influence (Portugal are pretty good at footyball), population nearly 600,000 - it's possible 11 of them know which direction to kick the ball
Iceland, population just over 300,000, just out-qualified Netherlands

so based on my experience in real life, yes it's possible

i have no disagreement whatsoever that the rankings are crap. i've said it many many times, and agreed with your first point (albeit with a different example). but, you brought them up, and we simply don't know - they might well give USA, Denmark or Ireland a good match. so it was hardly an irrefutable point. harsh to criticise a team that you know very little about just cos they made you lose a bet once lol they haven't lost for ages by the sound of it, what more can they do :D

What's even the point in the rankings? Load of old *****. Seedings for competition should be based on positions in the last competition.
