Just heard on BBC he has sadly died.

Shocking news as he seemed fine on Football Focus yesterday.Always thought he seemed a decent bloke.

At that age, do you have to wonder if it was suicide? Terrible news, was doing a great job as Wales manager and was always a popular figure in the game.

Shocked and saddened by this news.

Fantastic player in his day, racked one of the all time apps in the Premier League, 85 caps for Wales and all round decent guy.

Cannot believe he took his own life.

He left behind 2 young sons.

Awful for the family. Back in the late 90s I experienced what they are going through right now, hope they get all the help they need.

There are not many deaths outside the family that brings tears to my eyes but this did I got a text from my son at lunchtime, so very very sad especially by the way of his untimely death

When Iheard the news of Garys untimely death and the response at Swansea im not ashamed to say I had tears in my eyes. He was a trully popular man to all football supporters . sympathies to his family especially his wife and two young children RIP Gary.

Totally shocked. His recent exploits with Wales was one of the more interesting stories in football. It shows, we can't judge and we can't guess some things.

me too yes never before seen a minutes silence turn into a minutes applause like that. extremely poignant. rest in peace Gary. really shocking news.

Shay Given had tears in his eyes before kick-off. Craig Bellamy has asked to be withdrawn from the Liverpool squad.

To have so many around you that thought so much of you, yet feel that lonely there was no one you could to turn too.

A very sad story, from the outside world looking in, a devoted father of two, MBE, coach of the most promising welsh team in years.
Must be something serious about to be revealed.

He always seemed a model pro and well liked and respected throught the football world.

A real shame.

Up there with the Jill Dando killing in terms of 'have I read that right?'. Saw something briefly about him and thought he must have gone to a top club as manager. Just shows how little one knows from the outside, I think most football supporters would have thought that he would have been very near the bottom of the list in terms of players likely to commit suicide.

I am 99% certain I was sat very near him in a pub in about 1997. If not it was a bloke who looked remarkably like him. Presuming it was him he was about the fittest, healthiest looking person I think I've ever seen.

Really bad news.

Walked off a pitch in Coventry with my lad and his 17 and 18 year old mates to hear this awful news. The lads were visibly shocked because even to their generation he was a model pro. What a terrible waste. Prayers are with his poor wife and sons and mum and dad, who watched his every game.

Feel for his Wife, kids, family and friends, that he's left behind.

There's always a reason why .. I can just see the toilet gutter press running around like headless chickens now, trying to find out why as I write this

Terribly sad , and shocking news. Difficult to take it in. He had achieved so much and was so highly-regarded.
Our thoughts go to Gary's family, friends and all his football pals. And the Wales FA and team and supporters.

The thing that gets me about this is.......WHY????

Why did he kill himself? Someone who seemed to have so much going for him.

Surely he hanged himself due to one of 2 reasons

1. Depression
2. Shame because of something he'd done

I'd never heard a whisper previously about either

Can't believe it, went to see a few Leeds games in their championship season to see two players, Cantona and Gary Speed....One can only wonder what led him to this
