went in to the club house at London scottish with a great big grin on my face after watching grasshoppers u13 win, saw this on the on the tv and left the club house totally shocked.

I am sure there was a reason and it will come out eventually. I just hope he wasn't being hounded by someone or others.

Depression for one is not always visible to others , Robert Enke in Germany kept it all away from his team mates as did that referee recently.

That's exactly right.
You always hear with these sad stories quotes from family and friends saying something along the lines of "He seemed so happy" etc.
The fact is depression is a very debilitating illness and a lot of people don't understand it. You don't want to tell people because you will get people treating it with disdain, possibly because it is referred to as a 'mental illness' and the connotations of mental and an asylum, as we saw it this year with Geoffrey Boycott's remarks about Michael Yardy.

So very sad.......puts everything else in perspective. moaning about work, lack of firepower, lack of funds and whether or not we can afford a holiday next year. Said a little prayer and hope he's at peace.

Always sad when someone takes their own life.

Particuarly sad to hear that Gary has passed away - always seemed the model professional, a class act, and one of the biggest and best when the Premiership started... Nothing really to dislike about the bloke, what a tragedy.

It maybe clear from the circumstances that there is a reason. It's not ours to know why. The only people that should be in a position to query this, is his family. Why he took his own life should remain private. WIthout wishing to be rude, your upset and mine is paltry compared to that of his family and friends. Idle speculation is the job of the News of the World and look where that got them.

I really hope that his sad death isn't linked to press speculation and we don't hear or see anything that changes my perception. Leave the family grieve privately and with their dignity.

If its linked to 'press speculation' of something which he ultimately shouldn't be too ashamed of, then I hope those press feel guilty. Tbh I'm just speculating on speculation. Whatever the reason, this is just so sad for those close to him and unfortunately will bring back horrific memories for those who have suffered loved ones committing suicide. My thoughts are with such people.

I know a few footie people, and to a man they thought him a great guy.
I have no idea what drove him to take his life when he had so much to live for.

Such an awful shame.

As for Gary Speed, there must have been something serious troubling him for him to take his own life. That could anything from an emotional crisis (maybe he never adapted to his playing career ending), an issue in his private life which is either shameful or devastating, or maybe even a brain injury sustained during his playing career (a number of American Football players have taken their lives, believed to be a result of injuries sustained during their playing careers). Either way, it is a very sad state of affairs. RIP.

Met him once in the 90's in a wine bar in Weybridge with Gareth Hall. Bloody nice bloke.

Couldn't agree more.

My father took his own life in similar circumstances when I was three years old and my heart goes out to his wife and children. It is a sad fact of life that the tabloid press will descend like vultures in search of salacious gossip. I just hope that his family are left to grieve and find answers in peace but I cannot see this happening. Whatever stories come out in the coming days and weeks I hope people will remember that he does have a young family and the wonderfull footballing legacy he left.

Still can't believe this news.

Many fellow pros and close friends have said that he seemed so happy and had everyhting to live for, but who knows what was going on in his private life.

Thoughts are with his wife and two children.

Well said, my worry is that there is likely to be some bad stories out soon, I've been warned that they are not good but said I didn't want to know. I am using someone else's opinion of "not good" but my question is what good will they do? If it is the murky football affairs that have caused this, firstly I was be deeply shocked and saddened that it is enough to commit suicide over and none of my fecking business. I'm not looking forward to this.

I do not think any of us want to hear the bad stories that may well come out NB as they will not do any good now he has gone.All it will do is feed the hacks with the crap they normally serve us so my response would be remember the man for what he gave us all wether we followed his clubs or not.Try and ignore the crap that will,no doubt,surface.

Me neither. If there is something and it comes out what good will it do to his family who must be devasted?
I'm hoping against hope that any 'stories' are put in the bin for the sake of his wife and kids. I'm not interested in knowing.

Sort of what I wrote yesterday mate. With the Levenson inquiry still in progress, I hope that whoever has the power to publish re considers and consigns whatever salacious scandal they were about to make public to a bin, never to re appear.

So, so sad, tragic. Terrible for his wife, children and parents in particular. He seemed to have everything including great style and film star looks. You would think nothing is bad enough to consider taking your own life, as a last resort just walk away from the problem, maybe he couldn't. I sincerely hope no 'bad stories' as mentioned above emerge over the next few days as he seemed like a thoroughly decent guy.

Totally agree. How very sad that even in todays climate, that could be a reason to take your own life

i don't want to go on about it particularly, as i side with the sensible among you who are saying "i don't wanna hear the stories". but i'm so stunned and curiosity got the better of me.

we will see but i agree, it is incredibly sad - the "story" was innocuous tittle-tattle which would possibly raise an eyebrow for us commoners, but would turn Gary's life upside-down. if (and it's naturally a big "if") it turns out that way, i hope the scum journalist who was "investigating" him and threatening him with breaking the story realises what he's done.

However some football fans still buy The Sun after it`s disgraceful Hillsborough comments, so their is still a market for this trash news unfortunately. The people who buy this filth are just as guility as the hack.

If a hack from The Sun or another tabloid was threatening Gary Speed with a expose and he had could see no way out in his life for himself or his family, thus driving him to hang himself, would you in the future continue to purchase that newspaper?
