ah, well that's that then. totally trust the sun.

not really.

however, would they really be so dumb to plan an expose in the current climate? ie. during the whojamacallit report thing?
yes, probably.

Gary Speed

it's their business isn't it.

and Ace Face is right in a way which I think got slightly trivialised by the "clever" response that followed - the people who lap up this tittle-tattle are the ones responsible for investigative journalists looking for it.

this is such a shocking event, it may help some better values to come about in society.

not that that's any consolation whatsoever to the grieving family.

Gary Speed

:( sorry, that's all a bit unnecessary too. for all we know it could be the depression thing we already speculated on.

Gary Speed

it's all very sad.. inquest starts tomorrow..

After reading what the S*n have been saying/doing during the Leveson inquiry (Anne Diamond/Charlotte Church) , I really wouldn't trust anything they say......

Gary Speed

Tragic News. My thoughts are with his wife, two children and close family who have to cope with this sudden loss. RIP Gary .

Gary Speed

do they have there own journalist or simply rely on plagiarism?

Bit of both i think.Morals mean nothing to this rag imo.
Want to say something on this tragedy about Robbie Savage.I watched earlier Mr S talking about his mate Gary and how he got through the interview i do not know because he was clearly upset from the outset, yet he did,all the time his eyes were welling up and couldnt get the words out.A moving peice from a freind who, lets be honest,is not everybodys favourite man.Doff my cap to Robbie for doing what he did for his mate.

To be fair, since he stopped playing the panto baddie on the pitch he's gone up in my eyes. I like him on 606 as he has a strong opinions yet is prepared to let callers get their point across and while I try to avoid Strictly Come Dancing as not my cuppa, I will always look up and keep an eye on when he's on screen. To me he comes across as fairly shy, self deprecating and a genuinely decent bloke. he is very close to his family and his father is very ill and it clearly upsets him when it does get raised albeit far too frequently by others.
How he got through that interview I don't know, it's very clear that he really was a very good friend held Speed in high regard and was determined to do the right thing and pay his tribute.

Gary Speed

........yep.........just seen the interview........ The fella is in bits.........

Those journalists are scum but to label everyone who has bought the sun paper in the last 20 years as such is pushing it in my view.

:imwith: Human nature. You can go back centuries and find that everyone has always loved a bit of a scandal. I can guarantee that there would be more than enough posts on here if something came out about Gary Speed and he hadn't committed suicide.

Gary Speed

As I think someone else has pointed out, it would be good if some positives somehoiw come out of this horrendous event. A Gary Speed Foundation to help people going through whatever issues led to his 'apparent suicide' whether it be depression or something else. Hopefully in time something like that would be some small comfort to his family. Whatever caused his actions, its safe to say there will be others in and out of football in a similar place.

Gary Speed

Hear Mark Speights father on Radio 5 today who talks about he gets on with his life.It was very, very moving.

RIP Gary. Thoughts with your family. Tragic waste of a good man.

i don't think he said that, but i'm not really in the mood for discussing it further.

Gary Speed

However some football fans still buy The Sun after it`s disgraceful Hillsborough comments, so their is still a market for this trash news unfortunately. The people who buy this filth are just as guility as the hack.

If a hack from The Sun or another tabloid was threatening Gary Speed with a expose and he had could see no way out in his life for himself or his family, thus driving him to hang himself, would you in the future continue to purchase that newspaper?

RIP Gary Speed

I think he did to be fair. Bish, you have mugged off about 25% of the Brentford support

Gary Speed

Shearer said they were arranging the details for Speed to stay at his house nxt weekend on sat....12 hrs later he commits suicide...something not quite right about this

i don't see the words "20 years" or "scum" there at all. i think by "this filth" he's referring to "trash news" generally, rather than the Sun specifically. i think you're way out of line to say he's "mugging off" anyone, especially on an otherwise sombre and respectful thread. like i say, i'd really rather not have petty arguments over semantics, especially at this time.

hanworthbee - this is the worry i guess. i really hope there's not a terribly unsavoury story behind this. the reaction so far has shown how revered the man was - i hope it can stay that way

Gary Speed

Can't u lot take this discussion elsewhere please!?

Gary Speed

A very good friend of mine would have been working very hard to get the storey for his paper, and I am sure a quick phone call will tell me all, however at this moment I don't want to know. Perhaps when I next see him at football I may ask
Too sad to discuss what I am sure are more depressing details than we know

Gary Speed

Whatever the reason for his actions it is nothing short of a terrible waste of life. My sincere sympathy goes his wife and family. However, if the scource of his untimely action is laid of at the door of scum journalism, then, and only then, I hope it becomes public and that the newspaper concerned gets it just reward.

Having been born in Wales and long ago accepted that Welsh football cannot compete on the world stage, I am now beginning to believe that the football gods are conspiring against us. Just when it was starting to look like we might, just might be finding a breakthrough this terrble event happens. He was the first man for sometime that actually got the better players to have pride in playing for their country and I only hope they will use this terrible event to motivate rather than crush the dream.

A sad loss to the Welsh football nation, but even sadder for his loved ones.

Gary Speed

I don't think football should be in anyway mentioned in the tribute to Gary and his family

Regrettably Gary was known to the world through football and his short life was all about football, therefore it is really not possible to leave football out of the equation.

However, I do agree it is a tribute to the man that matters and sympathy to his loved ones is paramount. For what it is worth I am more grieved that such a young gentleman, or any other lesser known person come to that, should be driven to such a tragic action. However, if the reasons behind this are ever laid at the door of the tabloid media I trust that they will feel the full weight of ther justice system for their disgraceful actions.

Rumours state the daily star.

Wouldn't surprise me, their online news is already dropping hints with quotes from his wife's twitter from a few weeks ago. You'd think they would leave alone for a while at least, if only for the sake of their children..

Gary Speed

Leeds fans are planning a pretty impressive tribute by singing Gary Speeds name for 11 minutes starting at the 11th minute of tonights game at Forest.

Why 11th minute or was he always squad number 11?

I only saw it in the petrol station tonight, headline 'last picture (photo) and had a picture of him with a guy with his arms round his shoulder, I may be reading too much into the scum press but don't think so

Gary Speed

Innuendo. I hope they sleep well in their beds.

Thanks, I didn't want to spell that word for fear of getting it wrong !
My thought exactly though

Re. Star photo and cover?
Is it really innuendo?
Football manager pictured with fan?

However...
If true they hounded him, then scum concerned deserve to suffer.

Gary Speed

i honestly can't believe they'd print that, within 48 hours - have they no shame? (sadly we know the answer here)

i hope that someone (who?!) comes down on them like a ton of bricks. outrageous.

i had a brief look last night but didnt notice anything.was wondering if you really meant to kill himself or was he hoping to be found and where was his wife if she found him at home at 7am but reading the paper todays it seems he went to the garage to do it...hope f for her and the kids sake he left a note

Gary Speed

I can't help thinking that whatever it was, it's a tragedy that he couldn't stay around and front it, nobody knows anyone else's breaking limit and we probably don't even know our own. All I do know is that I haven't heard or ever read a bad word about GS and that he has a wife and two young children who have lost a very valuable family member, 3 people who would have forgiven whatever it was that sent him over the edge.
As a parent, I remember the day I became a father, I toned down everything I did, I had this insane feeling of needing to make sure I stay alive and not be a pratt anymore, I had this feeling that surviving until they were teenagers was massive. We're there know and I'm not ready to give up just yet, they might not realise it but those kids need of ours still need us.

Joey Barton has been panned on Twitter for saying that suicide is the ultimate selfish act. A good friend of mine had to go through the suicide of someone close to her and I saw the devastation it caused - why did he do it but more importantly, a massive amount of confusion and guilt was left behind because she will never know whether it was because of her and whether she could have done more to stop him doing it.

Interestingly enough, at the inquest of his death two things were said - keep off anti-depressants because they can be dangerous sh*t but also that the coroner believed just as hanworth says that he didn't intend to kill himself - he wanted to be found but it went wrong. A cry for help.

Anyone see Bryn on Sky Sports News on Mon evening? Gary was a good friend of his and he spoke of texting each other on the sat, then Bryn texted him on sunday saying I hear there's a sick rumour going round, please contact me. Then broke down in tears live on snn. Terrible stuff.
