So if you were made unemployed, you would only look at pay levels you used to earn as possibility of getting back into work?

He's what 33, now, had injury problems. I would be very surprised if he ever got near what he used to earn.

I was talking about Liam Rosenior...:sorted:

.............good luck to him...............

His legs may give way (although there was no sign of that tonight) but his class won't desert him. He broke up play, intecepted the ball and found a team mate with every pass. He did more work on his own, in the first 25mins, than our whole midfield did all game.

Gavin Mahon

Man of the match in my opinion

Gavin Mahon

MOM tonight for me. His reading of the game, positional play and passing were top draw.

Just like he used to do for us at his peak. Good luck to the bloke in the twilight of his career.

My dad says when he played for Brentford he was a very skillful midfield player or centre back. Last night, I saw a bit of a clogger. Mind you, he is 37 now.

"my Dad tells me" ! Was it really that long ago,Blimey..

A very good player..Some said he'd be no loss when he left,oh how they were proved wrong when we were just left with Rob Quinn

Didn't Quinn leave way before Mahon went? GM leaving may have cost sun promotion that season, we'll never know for sure.

He could leave his foot in at times but I suppose at every level and when you start to lose it, leaving your foot in becomes a bigger part of one's armoury......

Quinn left as part of the Andy Scott transfer to Oxford during the 2000-01 season, Mahon left in March 2002.

He was an excellent player who was underrated by some because he wasn't particularly flashy and was happy to pass backwards or sideways rather than always driving on. I'm definitely of the school of thought (possibly just containing me) that he was a key part in our near miss season in 2001-02 and his departure was a serious blow to our chances. Around November that season Paul Evans was injured and Mahon marshalled a very inexperienced midfield well enough to push the team on. When Evo returned we didn't seem to be able to accommodate both and we went on a disastrous 5 match run of defeats. Mahon's last game (IIRC) was at home against a very good Cardiff side who had just started to put together a run which had them just fall short of the play offs (and was a platform for them to go up the following season) - we were losing and being outplayed by half time and Mahon was instrumental in turning that round into a win. Late that season we were playing with walking wounded and had we still had Mahon might just have had enough to have pipped Reading to automatic promotion without the heartache of the last day of the season (think how you felt after Doncaster at home season before last - that's how we felt when Cureton equalised).

He was a clever player who while a bit sluggish glided about the pitch and had a very sweet left peg.
Sideshow did well for us and really shone at sweeper bar that moment of madness vs Port Vale.

I was there !!

Gavin Mahon

Wasn't it Mahon with the sloppy back pass in Cardiff against port vale in ldv that lead them to go 2-1 up?

Gavin Mahon

I thought Mahon was an excellent centre half, more class and composure on the ball than Ingimarrson/Sodge. That Cardiff game on the Tuesday night was memorable.

Gavin Mahon

Oh no, it was far worse. There was no, "with this team we'll get 'em next year!". It was go up or go bust, and we all knew it. Closest I've ever come to crying after a match. We lost that whole side and came within a lot of bucket shaking of being wound up.

Yes we were playing with walking wounded and that's why it didn't work. Otherwise it was a great first eleven which picked itself.A lesson for those who want to play the same eleven week in week out. You need a squad and we had no depth that year. You can get away with it sometimes but more often than not you won't and we didn't. A lot of discussion now about what team we Warbs will select but it's largely irrelevant as Warbs will use his squad to the full. Rotation has arrived.
