True but as I understand it and happy to be corrected they have ditched the soft signal - so the third umpire in my view should be 100% certain that the ball did not ground. I need to watch the replay again later but Green’s reaction on the big screen at the ground said it all for me and others.

It is impossible to tell if this was a catch or not. Like a tight offside as you cannot determine when a ball was kicked to the 1/1000000000th of a second. Decisions like this are all part of the game. Officiating decisions have been part of sport for centuries. If you have to rely on moaning about a tight decision going against you, then you are not winners.
You made the case that if it is impossible to tell this is a catch or not then you can't give it out. Not moaning but this is 2023 not 1983 and with all the advances in technology one should get decisions like right.
And nothing can change that it is IMPOSSIBLE to tell if a ball is "grounded" or not.

The soft signal only comes into play if the technology doesn't work for the third umpire.
Perhaps put a sensor chip in a cricket ball that can indicate the ball contact against ground/grass versus the hand. Naked eye and current TV technology as you say aren't 100%
Maybe we could just accept that marginal decisions happen in sport and move on from them. This quest for absolute certainty is tiresome. I guess we'll have AI making all the decisions in no time anyway.
Bad decisions are part and parcel of sport, DRS works very well in cricket and cuts most out but not all, a toe nail offside doesn’t interest me in football, the quest for perfection is insane.

I had to Google this earlier. Handling the ball was removed as a stand-alone method of dismissal in 2017 and is now incorporated into obstructing the field.
I don't think it really matters, the balls not gone dead and he's handled it, it seems a fairly obvious dismissal to me.
So obvious that it looks like the umpire had to confer with his colleague!
