The following day (Saturday) the Irish women's team beat the West Indies by six wickets in the T20 World Cup in Bristol.

Then the men clinched the above series 2-0 in Belfast again, though this time the Indians put up more of a fight, only losing by one run.

Maybe India are adapting to the hot, sunny Irish conditions?

About 11k there yesterday. Tavern stand was closed & part of the Mound Stand. But rest of the ground was open. As it was a so hot, almost everyone sat at the back of each stand in the shade. Was quite funny seeing an almost invisible barrier around parts of the ground as most avoided the sun.

Was a matter of time after Stokes retirement and the Ashes debacle.

I didn't always agree with the methodology employed during the Bazball era but he improved results and made test cricket fun to watch so for that I wish him the best for the future.

I assume Brook will be the next test captain but I hope he isn't quite in the same style as his predecessor - I think the test side is very much in transition so it might be a while before we are challenging the very best again.

Despite being a Middlesex man…. I’d quite like to see Surrey legend Alec Stewart. Put a bit more routine, hard work and discipline back into the side…. And most the side seems to be from Surrey anyway.

Wow! My attention has just been drawn to this interesting piece on the economics of Cricket's IPL versus those of Football's PL.

"IPL vs Premier League Revenue: Analyzing the Per-Match Value Surge

As of June 2026, each IPL match is worth roughly ₹125 crore ($15.1 million). Compare that to the English Premier League, which pulls in about $11.5 million per match. The IPL is now the second most valuable sports league on earth per game, trailing only the NFL. Think about that. A league that didn’t exist twenty years ago is out-earning a century-old football tradition on a per-minute basis.

The logic is simple: Scarcity equals premium. The IPL plays 74 to 84 matches. The Premier League plays 380. Every IPL game is a national event, which means advertisers pay a massive “event premium” rather than a “standard rotation” rate. This efficiency is why the salary of sports manager in IPL 2026 has hit record highs. Of course 380 PL matches at $11.5m still comes to a helluva sight more than 80-odd IPL matches at $15.1m, and imo they're highly unlikely to gain eg a "massive upside if they crack the US and Middle East markets" etc any time soon. But for a sport which is currently nowhere nearly so popular worldwide as football, those are still seriously impressive figures.

(Also explain why the IPL is kicking the arse of Test Cricket, never mind the short ball game elsewhere. And as for the ECB's County Championship... :eek:)

Looking at the video evidence it seems they have done it many times over. All players found guilty need to be given a minimum of a 5 year ban. Horrible cheating, people give up their weekends to enjoy the game and they're ruining it for them.

The last game I played - 20 years ago! - was enough for me. Surrey Champs, 3rd XI, Division 3, or maybe lower. Top of the table clash. Except we'd played all the other bad teams at the start of the season. I won't name the club, but they skittled us for 60 odd. Got to within 20 or so by tea (although their ump "failed" to hear a massive snick just before tea, which annoyed us a bit). At tea, it rained. Hard. Our 1st XI on the next pitch never resumed. We were good chaps, so as we were clearly going to lose we offered to resume. First ball back, our medium pacer slid about a yard when he planted his front foot; the batsman hit it past me in the covers, I chased it and when I turned to throw it in, I saw everyone at the batsman's end huddled round the non striker, who has slipped when turning and dislocated his elbow. (Same guy who was out just before tea). Cue a long delay for the ambulance to scrape him off the wicket.

At which point, despite the wicket clearly not being fit enough, they were incredibly keen to carry on. Someone just lobbed them up a few to get it done. Mad.

And don't let me start on the guy with the broken toe ....

I saw the wider footage last night. The batsman clearly knew what had happened, was trying to click his fingers towards the umpire but it doesn't work that well in batting gloves!
