Had the privilege to play there in 2020. I've been lucky to play at other county grounds and Malahide. But this was by far the most special place I have played at.

Its really tough as a bowler there as its a road and anything that beats the ring races for 4.

One of my best wickets was taken there. Top of off. As you had to be perfect to get anything out of that track.

I played at Hampshire's ground on the IoW once. I'd never seen an 800 yard boundary before

I imagined opening the bowling at Arundel yesterday, a quintessential English scene, slight breeze behind, slight downhill approach to the wicket and then BANG, CRASH!

It's a bowlers graveyard for sure.

There is lots not to like about the Hundred (why are the kits so similar for one), the standard of player has risen a lot this year with the new investment. No more county plodders. Some of the actual cricket had been OK even if the premise remains very flawed.

Here is my take, I'm not the first to say these btw and reading between the lines you might be in agreement

It's like having fast food everyday, it becomes bland.
It degrades other forms of county cricket (Surrey have lost 17 players to the 100 this season)
It forces test match cricket away from the summer peak of August and early September and squeezes the test schedule (like the Ashes next season) into six weeks causing injuries and fatigue to the best international players.
Someone in the crowd is going to get killed or seriously maimed before long by the barrage of low flying cricket balls.

..and yet the crowds come in. It's popular of course and extremely lucrative but it's damaging to the game I once knew and for that I am sad

To answer the two posts above - yes the crowds are down, and I have been getting increasingly frantic emails trying to get me to go (I went a few years ago when I was working in Birmingham - nothing better to do and as an aside I'm glad to see they've demolished the area of the ground I was in, despatately needed!)

@HMDBFC - you make a really good point about crowd safety. There was a real "near miss" last night at the Oval, the ball disappeared down an exit but only narrowly missed people who were walking down there fairly oblivious to the missile threat was on its way. They might need to stop people leaving during play (overs?sets?10 balls?) so there is more chance they are focused on the cricket.

A steward (who wasn't watching the game through the course of his work) was hit on the shoulder this week, inches away from a potentially lethal blow. Half the crowd aren't watching properly... it's going to happen

I suspect what Ben doesn't understand is how tribal sport is in this country. Seeing a group of mercenary players who usually represent Yorkshire, Worcestershire etc, or from overseas, are not the same as being connected to a team that represents your local area. Even more difficult to feel connected when that team is taken over by an Indian IPL side, and so it feels even less connection. Ok for a bit of fun, but no real connection.

T20 and the like is a fairly mundane and formulaic watch anyway so as you say, take away the tribalism and it's just some big lads hitting a ball a long way.

Has always been my big thing/turn off about The 100.
I simply dont care who wins.
And for me, when watching any sport, I need to have some sort of investment.
Even if it's only where if I'm not bothered about a certain team winning, I really want the other team to lose!!!

Would make sense for outfield stewards (facing the crowd only) to wear some form of head protection.

Why do they need to be there? They can see the crowd from the spectator areas. And I don't think they're going to stop a pitch invasion.

It's not for a UK audience, never was, that was just marketing guff. It was always for the Indian TV audience, that's where the money is.

I think what they should do is fill it with sub standard Indian players, give them all stupid names like Sunrisers and Superkings, play the matches on Indian roads and fill the crowd with people who scream everytime the ball goes in the air.
Oh yeah, maybe it should be called something silly like "IPL" too.

Absolutely. Has more variety in his bowling than Bashir. Is also a genuine all rounder who can bat both styles - been opening the batting for Leicestershire in CC this season and is a highly effective one day batsman.

Missed the fifty over game at Lords last Sunday and at The Oval on Wednesday( I had not been aware of this one). Best chance of an affordable game with a result where you can bring your own food and drink.

Interesting take on the IPL by Usman Tariwlq, who's over here for the Hundred. Something for the IPL to think about.

To which Usman Tariq replied: "I've never even thought about playing in the IPL. The reason is their flat, easy pitches and short boundaries, where only batsmen get to play—bowlers just bowl. There, even a No. 10 batsman can hit you for six sixes in an over. I play in England's The Hundred League and the PSL, but in those, both bowlers and batsmen get a full chance to perform. But the IPL is the only league in the world where there's nothing for bowlers—they just make them bowl, while only batsmen get to play."

The fact he plays for Pakistan might limit his opportunities somewhat!

Looks like Australia on the rack at the moment. Obviously they were never going to play at Melbourne but i wonder if it was counter productive to play "offseason" at an unfamiliar ground. Either way they have an aging side. Still think Bangladesh will find a way to choke it up but here is hoping they win this.
