Hate Corner

People talk a lot about this "Hate Corner" I wasn't around when it was here, so what was it, where was it and how good was it. Alot of people seem to mention it so was there any good memories of it, games that kind of thing?

Hate Corner

Hate Corner is what you would call 'the home end'. It was the last couple of blocks on New Road - the Brook Road end of it. I can't tell you what went on there as I am sworn to secrecy :sorted:. :shudder:

Hate Corner

It was a lot of fun.

Hate Corner

In a nutshell, without giving too much away, it's where you used to go to hate people. Fulham, Queens Park Rangers, Birmingham City and anyone from the north. You would then clap your hands .

Hate Corner

great atmosphere in that corner, it has never been the same since unfortunately. But due to fans standing I'm sure one block had to be closed.

Hate Corner

Hate Corner were the cheap seats all the riff-raff from Hounslow & Feltham frequented. The more desirable clientele sat nearer the halfway line.

Hate Corner

the only reason they shut hate corner cause ken the copper couldnt make the stairs twice in a game

Hate Corner

Isnt it the same as the paddock near Brook Road?

jesus. it was the block nearest Brook Road, where you could proper pick people out in the other stand and have running banter throughout the game. i was only little at the time, i just caught the end of the craze. Lulu used to crack me up, every game lol
but i remember a game vs Bristol Rovers at home, where a big skinhead oaf was throwing stuff at Mark Walters every time he took a corner. yeah it was fun, but it got a bit OTT sadly

Hate Corner

get rid of the tarpaulin & have cheaper tickets in the new road please chapman/ken. the atmosphere has been far too welcoming to away fans inside GP for years. costs us 10 points a season.

many thanks.

Hate Corner

I do remember the Hate Corner lot giving it large to Millwall:nono:

There was one drunk Millwall fan at the front who made himself known and nobody went near him:nono:

I was a Paddck boy in those days, The Paddock was still better then IMO.

Hate Corner

It was nothing like the Paddock is now.

Great memories. The Bristol City play-off game, Luton in the relegation year, Cardiff in div 3 or whatever it was called then, the 4-1 against Swansea, the 'Owers' game v Notts County...it all came crashing down after that Millwall game when the woman got cut by a coin.

That's the one that sprang to mind for me - properly mental that day.

Hate Corner

i was exiled for the Luton game! first "big" game i'd been to and New Road was so full I had to settle for a seat nearer the Ealing Road

Swansea (and Exeter the weekend before) were very nice days :)

That Swansea game was brilliant.

Hate Corner

How many were there in this "hate corner"?

It was like the Stone Roses gig at Spike Island every man and his dog claims to have been there.
I grew up watching it from the middleish of New Road and a lot of the banter seemed to get my dad through his saturday custody of my brother and I.

Was it my childish imagination or was their a really rabid ginger fella there who often had dried saliva round his lips by half time:confused:

My brother and I still laugh about the time he lobed a full packet of polos at a visiting player from Hate Corner. At the time it was like choosing to use your i-pod as a knuckle duster in a fight.

When was the last great Hate Corner game:confused:

I thought spurs at home in the league cup was hilarious...except for the fellow ejected for making Nazi salutes. Totally intimidated and outsung them, they even joined in with 'sh*t of north London'.

Hate Corner

But....... Despite all that's been said about Hate Corner, the pre-seated, terraced gathering just inside the entrance in the middle of New Road beats it hands down for me. Though I'm sure someone's going to trump me by going back further to the Royal Oak days of the 70s :sorted:.

Hate Corner

Was great whilst it lasted.

At it's peak between 1996-2001 IIRC.

Swansea, Cardiff, Notts C, Millwall & Luton were the more memorable games.

However, Bristol Rovers one year was funny when we sang "You're Welsh and you know you are" and they reposted with "You're Pak*s and you know you are"
A little racist but funny all the same.:afro:

The oak was special, I also enjoyed standing on New Road next to the fenced off away bit which was near Ealing Road but still in New Road. Loads of banter through the fence at our northern bros. That was "my" place.

Especially when there was no segregation of fans! The more genteel went round to ER at half time for it was always ER 2nd half (provided we won the toss).

Hate Corner

West Brom, Brum and Hudders seem memorable games to me when I stood in Hate Corner. very lively:D

Hate Corner

So why did the Hate Corner end? Did people just stop or did the club/police put an end to it?

A vicious publicity battle with the Love Parade ensued.

We lost the battle...:sneakoff:

Seriously though we all got in to nu-metal and self harm and that satisfied our angry whims instead. Damn you Fred Durst!

When Ken's autobiography, 'The Beekeeper', comes out I'm sure it will be down to the sterling work of the Met.

Moving the away fans did it.

Hate Corner

I think the legend of Hate Corner might have been over exaggerated over the years to the tune of one tad. Nine times out of ten it would thin out to virtually nothing at half time if the Bees were (and they usually were) batting towards the Ealing Road end. Still, would be good fun to bring it back for a game though :sorted:.

yes the middle of new road was great atmosphere/fun for about ten years up to 1995/6. bah GP is so sh*t these days. ****ing seats & new fans.

Hate Corner

Hate Corner was a bit late for me, I'd moved on but still had a small part in it, I always thought it was a comical place with a very small amount of nastiness attached. The Oak was nasty without too much comedy and I always thought that Hate Corner was a pisstake of bygone days. Perhaps I missed the point but I saw it as a place where people were "new" fans who yearned for how it used to be and hammed it up a bit.
The days of a BFC firm had well gone so HC grew.

What season was this picture from?

combo. it got a bit too rowdy, and a bit too close to away fans. i think i missed the game (it's not in the memory banks), but i think we riled Millwall without any serious consequences... but the club saw the potential danger, and solved it with tarpaulin :thetruth:

I think it stopped because of the safety certificate not being renewed because the fans never sat down. Police / Houslow Council, I think ?

Yep, after the Millwall game the last two blocks were tarpaulined off. There was a lot of stuff being thrown and one woman in the Bees end ended up with a cut head although it was never resolved from where the coin was thrown. I believe Andy Scott put us 1-0 up that day.

I was just looking for this. I was meaning to come back to it. But you've taken care of it already ISB. Good lad :sorted:.

thank you. i am glad someone appreciated that & i thought it would be you. x

great scenes. before you batted for the other side! speedo, oddbod, good minton, billy hunt, ISB, nick logan, gash, gumboselfish, abee, rebus + so many non geekviners & ex brentford fans as well. all the faces. lol

ISB were you stewarding around that time. I remember selling programmes on the New Road in that era, and the number of times the stewards had to tell people to filter down the side entrances as the middle was so jam packed......great scenes

i think that was when hate corner disappeared for a year as we gave the away fans the other end mate. or maybe even before hate corner. actually yes well before hate corner i was a steward as it waw when i turned 16 and the price went up so about 1990/1/2/3. always took the big games off and went as a "fan". why don't you sell programmes any more?? if only we had stuck with it mate!

Hate Corner

But............Hate Corner was comedy, right or wrong?
It twas a place to go when pissed and have fun with your mates at the expense of the away dayers and then leave quietly to go and do some more alcohol.

That's the way I always saw it .

Hate Corner

i always thought it was fun, and it got spoiled by nastiness creeping in

Are you old enough to remember the Oak? I just about am and my early days on there were eye opening. There was a general aura of "this must be defended at all costs" amongst it's patrons. It was a real end and absolutely inspiring when full and/or in good voice, HC was a light hearted version which served a good purpose.
