He has to score that chance. It was harder to miss.

He needs to get some goals in the bag over the next few games. You can't have your number 9 not scoring goals.

It's a tough one because his overall play is so good.
Love him to bits but his “overall play” was not good today.

Igor Thiago

i thought he worked hard for the first ⅔rds of the game, sharp for his assist to Lewis-Potter but it never seemed to gel with Anthony-Jensen-Ouattara which maybe was due to all four never having played together in those roles. Seemed to tire in the final ⅓ – I thought we'd benefit from Wilson's nous.

Igor Thiago

I dont think people have stopped to work out why we have spread goals all across the team this season.
Yes, a lot of it is because oppo teams are double and triple teaming Igor because they are so scared of him, leaving space for others.
So lets hope him being "sh*t", "shocking" and all the other b***ocks people spout about him continues for a while while we score for fun from everywhere else, hey?

Igor Thiago

People can dress it up and put a positive spin on it as much as they like. Working hard. Great holding up play. Brings others into it, etc, etc. no one is questioning his effort

But your no. 9 is there to score goals. And he isn't. Nor does he look like doing so. Form is temporary and class is permanent we know, but anyone saying they're happy with how he's been this season isn't being truthful, imo

So you would be happier if Thiago had scored 10 and nobody else on the team had scored?
Its a team game and i for one am loving sseing goals come from everywhere thanks to Thiagos tireless workrate

It's possible to have both. No relevance of a whataboutery comment. This is about Thiago's performances. And they've been nowhere near most of last year's. That's the point.

Igor Thiago

Tough gig 2nd half but in general we need way more from him. Everything seems laboured and despite the assist I’d rather he was in the box more often.

Last season he snarled at the oppo as he knocked them about. All a bit nice and smiley this season.

He is playing a different game this season, double, triple teamed.
He has adjusted to this by being more open to coming out wide, dragging defenders out of position to help others.
I would commend both him and KA for doing this - a lot of strikers would say they want to stay where they were to the detriment of the team and to keep their stats high

Agreed.
Said today during first half he was mainly wide left. And a fair bit wide right.

Igor Thiago

His all round game has been great this season. Its not working for him in front of goal but that happens.

He looks short of confidence. Hopefully he bangs in a hat trick at hull and never looks back.

Its not ideal but he is performing for the team and hopefully its only a matter of time before he gets the goals he got last season.

Igor Thiago

Apologies. just seen the equalising chance back and Igor DOES get to it. But plays it with the outside of his right foot. A side foot may have been a better option.
Do you think he had time to side foot it ?thought it was more like an outstretched toe poke others have said it was a tap in.

Igor Thiago

Not just today.
Still very important defending our box but has been beaten too often up top and missing too many scorable chances.
I genuinely think a large part of it has to do with referees. Not at the time, but cumulatively, because the useless tw*ts penalise him for everything and give him nothing.
He’s understandably, but wrongly, not ignored them, and adapted. I think the result is someone who looks and feels like they can’t win. Only way to change that is accept the referees are dogsh*t and keep bulling the opposition in attack and accepting you’ll get penalised WAY too often.

This is the only thing for me. Gets his foot shape totally wrong, side foot was the way

Igor Thiago

He was trying to be more of a playmaker today, going to the sides, and sometimes making the odd extra pass, when he could have just taken the shot. I don't think anyone would complain if he is a bit selfish, being the striker.
Love his effort and work rate, that's a bonus - but his foundational job should be scoring.

Igor Thiago

Bereft of confidence - happens to the best of strikers. Chances he was instinctively finishing last season are currently shanked or a moment of hesitation leads to him being crowded out or the opportunity blocked. Never a graceful player when he's struggling a bit he can look a bit clumsy.

The effort and work rate and positive attitude are still there though and he doesn't hide at all. Back him.and he will come good, his physicality and presence are vital to the way we play.

Best thing we can do is back him because he is a massive confidence player. @aawharris is correct doesn't matter if Thiago only nets half as many goals as last season if the other forwards step-up and get into double figures as oppo defences concentrate on stopping the Brazillian Battering Ram.

Igor Thiago

Tracking back , working hard and holding the ball I felt he had a great game at Villa and again today - in front of goal I worry, needs to get the ball on target when the chances come. Hes having a bad spell in that respect but, to be dropped would only impact on this confidence issue. All seemed to start with the world cup - he went in off the back of a great season and struggled and didn't take his chances, that I think hit him hard . I truly believe at some point the floodgates will open again

Igor Thiago

Beginning to wonder if he's a one season wonder?

Maybe time to give Callum Wilson a start and when Furo is fit hopefully he'll be able to challenge for a starting spot.

Today was the perfect game to Wilson 30 minutes, no one bullies van dijk and it clearly wasn’t working . If it wasn’t today not to sure when Andrew sees giving him minutes

Igor Thiago

Been poor pretty much all season. His first touch, hold up play has been largely sketchy, he has stopped jumping for headers and gives the defence a free run all game. His decision making on the ball has been horrible most of the time.

I think he needs to play through it, dropping him won’t help, it can turn around very quickly.

Igor Thiago

He's having a bad spell by the elevated standards we all have for him but he continues to get into all the right positions, and see a lot of the ball, so I see no reason to be especially worried. Would have backed him to break his drought this afternoon had the game proceeded in a more regular fashion.

Igor Thiago

How many changes is Thiago getting a game? Not very many.

Whenever the ball goes up to him he is being continually fouled and man handled. Not even subtly.

He’s working hard. He’ll come “Good.”

He hasn’t stopped jumping for headers. He is continually fouled when the ball comes towards him. Often by Jacquet who then collapsed on the floor when he was attacked by a daisy.

He's on 4 bookings. Granted I'm not sure any of them should've been, but hard to be in the faces snarling at opposition when you get booked for your first "tackle"

Igor Thiago

This attempt at a finish is really abject. So far removed from the Igor of last season who would have scored this chance every time.
100% disagree.
"Abject"?? In what way?
Van Dijk is clear favourite to get their first as the ball is crossed, but IT manages to get his foot/toe in front and tries to poke it in. Which is pretty much all he could do under the circumstances.
May well have gone in last season, as everything seemed to for him. Just not getting that luck at the moment.....

Igor Thiago

My stated hopes before the start of the season were that we are less reliant on IT. This is not what I meant!

Abject because it is so technically sloppy. He gets there first and it is a sidefoot into what is basically an open goal, Alisson having been completely taken out by the beautiful cutback by JA. Instead he tries to hit it with the toe/ outside of his boot, and makes a complete meal of it. If he had got any solid contact on the ball it is a certain goal, and for me it is a very poor miss.

I'm not calling him out - he is an amazing character and has been immense for us - but what we are seeing at the moment is really out of character for the player we all watched last season.

No one is claiming he had a great game (you can see that from his rating) and I’m not sure how to access xG stats for individual events. Thiago had an xG of 0.45 for the whole match yesterday. Therefore, to characterise any of his chances as “a certain goal” is inconsistent with reality. Big chances missed is also 0.
