IMO he should keep his thoughts in his head. A case could be made on recent historical terms for a gesture to be made when many a national anthem is played at football matches. We don't do it and neither should he.

James McClean

He's a young lad who doesn't want to acknowledge the English national anthem some may understand his reasoning more than others. I can see where he's coming from I have Catholic family who were terrorised by the British army for years living on the north/south border some days being made to wait at check points purely because there Catholic. Women being made to wait at check points whilst the army dropped the men off in the Protestant areas NAKED made to walk miles back to the safe areas. I am English born and bred and am not turning this into a sectarian debate, but a lot of the things that happened in Ireland were disgusting and for a young Irish man to witness this or see first hand the consequences of the troubles I'm sure anyone on the Catholic side would share his outlook on england and what its anthem means.

If he's that bothered and scarred how can he bear to be over over here collecting hundreds of thousands of pounds a year?
I'm sorry I can't relate to your post or excuse provided

Some of the reactions to his reaction shows how difficult it is to solve any problem.

People from both opinions don't educate themselves and attempt to understand, they just react emotionally.

In the UK we were never taught in schools about how awfully colonised/attempted colonised countries were treated by British, and conversely people in those countries are taught that and never forget. It's then a difficult circle to get past because neither understand each other.

James McClean

Throughout Ireland, people North and South are doing their best to put the past into its proper context and start looking to the future:

Yet that stupid little ***** McClean wasn't even alive when Bloody Sunday occurred.

Hypocritical, attention-seeking arsehole.

P.S. That photo or comment isn't meant to be imply any opinion on the rights and wrongs (or otherwise) of Martin McGuinness, the IRA, Royal Family or Bloody Sunday etc

James McClean

i thought you meant the suspected Nazi on the right ;)

:sneakoff:

James McClean

I think he could be referring to the troubles circa 1920 and circumstances surrounding The Easter Rising and the reprisals that the Irish succumbed to in it's aftermath.

I guess respect towards an occupying force that interned, built concentration camps, burnt down towns and villages, shot innocent men, women and children, starved it's native population, cut of the heads of any objectors, looted properties, deliberately denied food and aid, removed indigenous people from land, homes, villages, towns and cities and stood by as these were denied the right to return.

Some would find it within themselves to forgive and forget, but others cannot and never will, and who can blame them.
We have to get used to that. Our Governments of past treated people of different race, colour and creed like ***** during our empire days.
Any objections were met by force and we took no prisoners.
Seems to me we were run by a bunch of psychopaths.

McClean is entitled to his opinion as much as those who criticised him for his beliefs.

Agreed but why choose to play in the very country who's actions he is still offended by ?
If he is that offended, he can easily ply his trade in Europe or the USA for similar rewards

Exactly, to live and work in a country you apparently despise is ridiculously hypocritical. Have your own beliefs by all means but choose the correct times to express them, this was not one IMO

My views on him are on this thread already

Interesting to see what views on here would be if Dougie or Alan Mac did the same, heard on good authority both would have had an issue if having to wear a poppie on their shirt in Nov

If true (although I have my doubts) I would have had them transfer listed the following day. No compromise from me I'm afraid. Remembrance day is about the millions who died in honour of this nation and to keep it a free country. For those who had relatives who fought and died to keep the Nazi's out of our isles the action of McClean is an insult, he is entitled to his point of view but he is stupid to air them so publicly and in the face of the population where he works and makes a very good living. I wonder what Baggies fans think of it all?

James McClean

Quite simple he's entitled to do whatever he wants in accordance with his principles...also everyone is entitled to criticise or not according to theirs...

For what's it's worth I respect his stance even though I completely disagree with it...

James McClean

What a massive hypocrite. If his beliefs are so strong why the hell is he plying his mediocre at best talent in a country he despises so much. Baggies fans hound this clown out of your club

He grew up on the Creggan estate, where six of the dead from Bloody Sunday were also from. He may not have been alive, but he would have grown up with the stories and the victims families. I am not condoning his actions, and to be fair I couldn't care less about what he did and he is entitled to his opinions. At least he is not some plastic paddy from Glasgow talking about the troubles.

What I find more strange is that there was a national anthem at a friendly, a flag was raised, and all the players had to turn and face the flag?!? I am sure if it was done like it normally is he would of just stood there quietly, like all the other non-Brits playing. Why do a national anthem for two teams mainly made up of non-Brits, at a game in the US? It is almost as though (given his past with the poppy shirts etc., and it was in South Carolina) there have may have been some planning behind this.... hmmm

it's just the norm in America, innit?

he's a numpty and a disgrace to republic of Ireland national team.regardless of your believes you should show respect....I dread to think how he was brought up

The Premier League is chock full of Germans, Argentinians, Italians and a dozen other nationalities we've been at war with.

Add to that another 50 territories we colonised (not that NI is a "colony", btw).

Plus there are any number of Irish players, North and South, including several from Derry.

And what do they all have in common? They accept they're earning their wage in England and just get on with things.

So what makes McClean so special that he acts like he's the Eternal Conscience of Irish Suffering and Martyrdom?

His international Manager, Martin O'Neill comes from a Nationalist background, went to school in Derry during the Troubles, played GAA, managed Celtic and all the rest, but could still captain the NI team and accept an MBE(?), without it compromising whatever personal feelings he may have on politics, or making him any less of an Irishman.

Oh and he was ten times the player that tramp McClean will ever be.

Grew up in the Creggan, so he knows all about suffering does he?

Well it's not too far from West Bromwich to Birmingham, where a few of the locals could tell him a bit about suffering:

It is the norm to play the National Anthem before all sports events in the USA, with the players and officials turning to face the flag. (Which we may find strange, but that's just the way it is).

So that when they were playing an overseas team, they also played their anthem, as a simple courtesy. (Not to play it might have been seen as disrespectful).

All the WBA players respected the US anthem, just as all the Charleston players respected the English Anthem.

But not McClean.

Even though it was in honour of the team which pays his wages.

And in a "neutral" country.

And wasn't singling him out any more than any of the other Nationalities who were on duty on the day.

Fair enough on the anthem stuff then.

I can see why he would want to take the 'position' he does given his background, and I am sure most people can sympathize (if that's the right word) with that. But making such a big gesture was silly, I agree with Pulis' comments on the matter, a more discrete head down eyes closed would be more appropriate.

The Birmingham bombings stuff is a bit left field though, even for you :D. It was a war and he's on one side of it! I think it is a bit unfair to suggest his actions were intended as an act of disrespect to any specific innocent victims of an IRA bombing. He does need to grow up a bit though.

Just as playing GSTQ is not "intended as an act of disrespect to any specific Irishman who may be in earshot".

Including McClean.

James McClean

Without trawling through the other pages, im sure its been mentioned already.

The huge irony is with McLean playing for WBA, and therefore in the UK, and being paid a vast amount of money each week. Its likely that through his taxes, he is paying far more than any of us for the upkeep of the British Army.

The bloke is a grade a dic*'.

Should any British Islands based teams turn their back on the German national anthem because of all of the deaths that were attributable to WW1 and WW2, should African teams turn their back on the English national anthem due to colonialism etc etc? Disrespectful little twa*.

If he doesn't like it, he should leave England and to an earlier question, ply his trade in (for example) America, China or somewhere as far away from England as possible. Go and play for Shamrock Rovers for €300 a week.

The bloke turns "Away" from the national anthem - has anyone/ ever (?) done that & you think that is just down to principles without any thought of disrespect on his part???

Of course he is aware he is disrespecting Britain, but that's not what my post was saying.

The anthem starts up, and on cue, the American players turn towards the flag, with the WBA players following suit.

All except for McClean.

That's right, the same McClean who has made his Irish Republican politics crystal clear in the past, including regarding the British Army etc.

Fine. He's entitled to hold those views.

Fine - He cannot be forced to comply with the protocol.

But the playing of the anthem was a simple gesture of respect by the American hosts to their overseas guests.

For McClean to take it as some sort of personal slight, or intolerable imposition, such that he could not bear to join all his teammates in a simple gesture of mutual respect, shows what a self-centred, classless tramp he really is.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're not prepared to give respect, you can't expect to receive any in return.

Which I shall remember if ever he plays at Griffin Park...

I really don't think he feels disrespected in that situation, he may want you to perceive it as that but I'm very sure that is not the case. He must live a crap life in England if he repeatedly gets upset everytime he sees or here's something British. I personally feel it's a case of showing off to the boys back home at how brave he is, and letting everyone know his opinion. Like I said before, respect his right to an opinion, but silly choice of gesture.

James McClean

The **** hates everything british but proceeds to pay the higher rate of tax to the government that in turn pays towards the british army that the bogside boghoppers hate so much. He should sign for Celtic would fit right in at that strange club

I think it's both - he's a classic MOPE (Most. Oppressed. Person. Ever.), who would also take delight in proving to the boys back home what a Big Man he is.

Classic "Bar-Stool Provo"

James McClean

****ing *****, sums up what's wrong with some footballers nowadays, all about me attitude. Hope he gets stick from now until the end of his career.

You can't say "Je Suis Charlie Hebdo" on one hand but then get offended when someone doesn't want to acknowledge the National Anthem

No-one is saying he should be punished in some way for holding his opinion.

And by the same token, we must be entitled to hold our opinion of him.

You can't say "Je Suis Charlie Hebdo" on one hand but then get offended when someone doesn't want to acknowledge the National Anthem
The point about Charlie H is that if they are entitled to publish their cartoons, Muslims must also be entitled to be protest about them.

It's just that they're not entitled to murder the cartoonists.

Just the same as we are entitled to be offended by McClean, without advocating taking him out with a machine gun.

hope we get west brom in one of the cups and then he will get -hit loads of abuse

As one of the papers stated today, his gesture is just as offensive as the Queen doing a Nazi salute.

Oh.

James McClean

Just the same as we are entitled to be offended by McClean, without advocating taking him out with a machine gun.
I'll point out that the guy has received death threats for not wearing a poppy, but I take your point.

In my opinion, if he doesn't want to face the flag, that's up to him, and I personally don't find it particularly offensive (but I can't speak for anyone else).

If he was going out to deliberately provoke, it would be a different matter - but the way I see it, he's had a) the poppy, and b) facing the flag foisted upon him, and it's completely his prerogative whether he participates.

I wouldn't want to compel anyone to do something they weren't comfortable with for whatever reason, even if I felt it was a nice part of my own culture.

If he starts burning flags and poppies, and is actively being provocative I'll be as annoyed as anyone, but just because he's refused to toe the line I can't start ranting and raving like lots of people have.

James McClean

......there are many people on this forum who carry a political agenda,if not the same, then similar in many respects to that of James McLean ..........even PC is a political agenda.........my only concern for this lad is that he broadcasts his protest a tad too much.........he sets himself up rather nicely for being a target.......hope he knows what he's doing......silent protest sometimes can be the loudest young man.

James McClean

nice to see Pullis telling Sky that James McClean isn't the sharpest tool in the box, after he celebrated their win, in front of his old club fans for WBA..
