Jason Crowe

Local paper here in Portsmouth reckons that we are to take Jason Crowe, a right back, on loan from Portsmouth next week as they have just taken on Lambourde from Chelsea.
Anybody else heard this?

Jason Crowe

Heard something about it from a Pompey fan who works nearby. Crowe used to play for Arsenal and made it few substitute appearances in the Worthless Cup etc. I think he went to Portsmouth for quite alot but hasn't done the business.

Jason Crowe

I thought we had a decent little right back at the club waiting in the wings?

were not allowed to play squad players.Weve go to play people out of their normal positions instead.

The only specialist right back we have in the squad is Danny Boxall, who is hardly "waiting in the wings."

No doubt you are referring to Michael Dobson, a versatile player who has decided to argue his case for playing at right back, but hasn't proved to the coaches/management that he should be chosen ahead of Robert Quinn. He is less experienced at right back than Quinn (although it isn't Quinn's natural position either) and has virtually no experience at first team level.

I am sorry but people who think Dobbo is the answer are simply clutching at straws.

I do not mean any disrespect to Dobbo, who looks a decent prospect - but I would rather he came into a winning side, rather than the team we have now. The moaners would round on him in no time.

I heard the same story yesterday from someone who has a contact with an 'insider' at Pompey. The only two words that come to mind and Marsh and Simon in no particular order.

Jason Crowe

Edmundo, The point is that if they are not going to use these lads what is the point of keeping them at the club?

I accept the point that blooding the younger lads could be detrimental to their development if coming into a poor team, it is one that I have argued myself in regards to Mr Graham.

However, the management threw Mac and Mahon into underachieving sides, so why not Dobson? Obviously they see it as a problem with the player as it is a policy that they have used in the past for others. Theobold has played at full back in the past for us as well and must also be wondering when he will get a chance.

It is also worth pointing out that we are bringing young, inexperienced players who are not match fit anyway. I do not understand what the difference is between them and the players in our squad waiting for first team experience? Please explain Edmundo.

If we were top of the league the coaches could still argue that blooding youger players then was too risky because the defeat would have a greater effect on the side.

I feel that this attitude stems from the loss of the reserve side last season and the coaches being unable to get a good idea of the squad players in competitive football. Basically, they have not seen enough of them to form an opinion. If the player comes in and has a bad game the staff should give him the support etc that he needs so that it does not effect him.

...and inexperienced before being given the chance.

Jason Crowe

The Reading match was over at half-time when we were 0-3 down. (My reference for that statement is Ron telling us that the Bristol Rovers game was lost by half-time with the same score). On that basis why did the coaches not use the opportunity to blood young Williams when he could have had a run-out with no pressure. If he is good enough for the bench then he is worth taking a look at in a competitive game.I agree that we cannot just toss Williams, Dobson et al into the cooking pot and expect them to solve all of our problems but Reading was a golden opportunity to have a close look at one of them.It is these decisions that I find hard to accept together with the constant switching of personnel and formations during a match.

Jason Crowe

Looks like the coaches feel Lovett is more of a midfielder than a defender. He certainly played in midfield in the reserves game against Norwich.

Jason Crowe

Must say I'm confused. Teamlies is quoting Lewington as saying that we have a small squad! am I missing something?

OK accept that we don't see many of these fringe players everyday so the coaches have a better idea of their capabilities but if the likes of Lovett, Thoebald, Dobson etc can't at least be tried out now when will they ever and what was the point of signing them if they can't act as cover for injured players.

Thoebald in particular is barely a "youngster" now, is he that bad that he can't be used??

Jason Crowe

Since young Crowe spent a little while at Selhurst Park on loan two years ago, I thought I'd ask the Palace boys what they thought of him ...

Looks like he might be joining us on loan (if he isn't rather alarmed at our current performances).
Can any of you offer a view on what he's like?

Is he the chap that we had on loan from Arsenal a couple of seasons back?
If he is, he played left back. His performances do not exactly stick in the memory I'm afraid Edmundo, other than the fact that he was singularly unimpressive!

Perhaps some of our more studious fans can remember a bit more detail?

Edmundo, because you're a nice guy i'll be honest with you.
He is diabolical - especially his woeful performance at Bristol City and the 3-0 thrashing we received at Bury. He was also turned inside out easily at Bolton.

I hope he prooves me wrong but as SKATE says "be grateful he's only on loan".

Phew! Edmundo, you really had me worried there. When I saw this thread on the homepage I thought for a minute that WE were going to be signing him on loan. I really don't need to add to the above comments about Jason Crowe as I can't really remember anything he did for us, but to be fair I didn't see all the matches he played in and there may be a chance that he's improved since then to become a player of second division standard.

Jason Crowe

Quick, sign him up, he sounds just the player we need!

Jason Crowe

err...if noone else has noticed, he's actually signed...hip-hip HOORAY!!...i think...

Jason Crowe

Crowe's arsenal career is as follows:

30 seconds as a substitue in a league cup game against Birmingham in 97, terminating in a red card. Apparently he never played for the arse again.

Jason Crowe

I can't help thinking that the hard-as-nails Gladiator star should really be using his muscle in attack - the way he sorted out all those dirty Hun with flaming arrows and boiling oil was just brilliant...

Wild lunging tackle. (what wouldn't you give for wild lunging tackle?) ;-)

Turns out not to be completely true. Crowe played for Arsenal twice after that. Once, later that season, in the FA Cup against Crystal Palace, as a sub. And the following season in the League Cup against Derby County, again as a sub.

Jason Crowe

As you read this I am beating a gooner anorak over the head with a large kipper.

my apologies.

Jason Crowe

Right, then. How much do Portsmouth want and will he be happy to join us permanently? I know it's only one match, but I want him to become a permanent Bee!

Jason Crowe

I agree Crowe looks excellent the only problem is if he cost 650k to Portsmouth from Arsenal 14 odd months ago how much would they want. I guess they would wish to recoup as much as they can. Would he then be cover for Boxall or the other way round.
Much as i'd like to make his loan permanent I guess it would cost shedloads to do so.

My guess Boxall would play sweeper as Ron's tried him in that position a few times.

Jason Crowe

I'd sign them both if I ahve the cash, if Ronthinks likewise he may wish to sell to finance the deal.

Being realistic though, the value of both players is probably at its peak. This is unfortunate asi beleive that we need to make a profit by selling our assests as soon as we discover/ develop an adequate replacement. The profit on both of these players will probably not cover the additional expediture of their wages.

Jason Crowe

Sad it may be but there is a chance that Danny B will not get back to his past form, two serious injuries of that degree must cast a shadow over his future,Crowe looks as good if not a better player, But I doubt Ron will pay a large fee with the transfer system in doubt.

Jason Crowe

I think we could sign Crowe as we only have one real right back (a loan deal for the whole season maybe). We do not need Marsh as we have 2 left backs in Ijah and Gibbs, it's just really bad luck that they are both out at the same time.

We can't buy anyone until we sell some or release them:

To-go:

13) Pearcey
18) Graham
21) Pinamonte
22) Kennedy
24) Charles
23) Theobald

Plus others which I can't think of at the moment.

Even if we are not going to sign someone we still need to reduce wages and cut the squad.

Jason Crowe

Ok you lot enough beating round the bush how much should we be prepared to pay for Crowe?

£300000?
(higher or lower)

Jason Crowe

What do you mean by "we"?

I think Crowe is worth £300,000, assuming that the transfer system is retained. Whether or not Brentford FC can afford that amount is something that I don't know. We have to accept that such a decision must be made by the board/owner.

Will he want to join us permanently?

Ed, the chronny quotes Jason as saying he is impressed with the setup at Brentford, he enjoyed the Millwall game alot, likes playing back in front of a crowd and if he does well here he's on loan with a view to a permanent move. They will have to take stock in a month's time.

Jason Crowe

Totally agree Jezybee, lets get rid of the crap !! Crowe is superb, lets get him signed up !!

Agree that there should be some 'outs' but disagree with a couple of these:
Do we really want to lose our second choice keeper? And I seem to recall Graham getting good reviews for the stiffs recently. Care to comment on that anyone? As for the rest, the only one I've sen enough of to comment is del monte. Not convinced by him yet.

Crowe played centre back (or so it seemed!)against Tottenham and looked pretty impressive there aswell!

Jason Crowe

Fully agree about Crow said on Sat how good he was but a note of caution remember the Palace comments and also I remember others who were great on loan then became rubbish when they signed Holloway- Lee Frost Detzi Kry however his name is spelt

Jason Crowe

I find this amazing really.
Why hasn't this player been signed up by now,he's obviously quality, and quality that
we could do with.
I think he's on a par with Boxall maybe even better of what ive seen so far.
Lets get him signed and quick b4 someone else gets him

Jason Crowe

the problem is raybee that he cost portsmouth 750K and they want to at least recoup, then there is the salary. We have 34 odd professionals being paid already.
I think to increase the loan period would be the sensible thing until the transfer saga is sorted out, maybe another 3 months or something!

Jason Crowe

I reckon we're waiting 2 weeks to see if the situation on transfer fees is going to be so.

Jason Crowe

I am afraid that we must also consider the possibility that Crowe might consider us to be beneath him. I got the feeling that the opportunity of two games against Spurs helped persuade him to come to us on loan in the first place. Of course we must also hope that Mr Pulis doesn't get the heave-ho from Portsmouth - I gather that his position is somewhat rocky at the moment.

Jason Crowe

Er hand on a minute Ed, Pullis selling us a player?

Is he not usually buying them from us?

Jason Crowe

Fact is that when you take someone on loan, the team wants to either:
Test him out to see if he is worth it.
Have to take the player because of injuries.

For Portsmouth, it looks like they have loaned him out to see if he can play competitive football at a standard not too much lower than their own, whilst easing our injury crisis.
His wages will be fairly high, and Ron has expressed his anxiety over the transfer system. I think that he may get an extension to the loan, but we won't buy him as he's too costly.
Shame as I think he has the makings of an excellent full-back.
