I haven't even started on Steve Staunton yet but let's just say that his appointment did not strike me with enthusiasm when it happened and I have my doubts whether he's up to the task.

We do not have a very good team on paper wheels.We have 1 world class player in Shay Given,who incidentally saved us the last time we played Cyprus,and 2 very good international players in Duff and Keane.

:yes: there are some decidedly dodgy players in the squad these days, and that's cos there's pretty much no-one else. it's a worry but we're not as good as we used to be. a few years back we'd have had a chance of stealing this group (czechs are an aging team and germany are rubbish, you wait til the momentum of their lucky world cup runs out), but to be honest we might struggle to finish 5th

I felt at the time the Irish were too quick to force out Kerr who i didnt think was doing a bad job. In a group with France, Israel and Switzerland they only just missed the playoffs by a whisker. Should Ireland expect to always be better than these countries? I dont think so. They had no ideas for a replacement and now they have someone with no experience and no clue. If they had a quality replacement lined up then fair enough but they didnt.

He hasn't got a prayer.

He's trying to learn as a manager in the toughest qulifying system there has been for years with a squad not up to the task and the majority of his best players out injured.

And having got someone in to help, that fella is put put of action, pretty much permanently.

I don't think sacking the manager will solve the bigger problems in Irish football, namely that they don't have many good players. However, as Scotland are proving, the right manager can get results that he shouldn't with a group of players.
I suspect if there was an obvious candidate available he would be in teh job on Thursday.

The FAI doesn't work like that Chris.Hell the FAI doesn't work full stop. :(

Staunton was never going to be the right appointment,with or without an "International Football Consultant".The problems with Irish international football run far deeper than that.We have an under 21 manager I wouldn't trust to run a bath properly let alone help to develop players ready to make the full side,we have a bunch of incompetant fools at the FAI who really don't seem to know whether they are coming or going let alone run the association in a professional manner fit for the 21st century.We failed to build on the successes that Brian Kerr delivered at underage level throughout the 1990's and we are paying the price for that now.

Although the FAI have given their full backing to Staunton I'd say another heavy defeat tomorrow night will see the end of his tenure.I feel sorry for him as he served his country with distinction as a player and does not deserve the abuse he has received from certain sections of the Irish media.He is a proud man and the situation we find ourselves hurts him as badly as it hurts all genuine lovers of Irish football...probably more so. :( He has however been shown to be badly out of his depth at this level and should no longer be in charge of the National team.I blame the FAI and John Delaney for this sorry mess more than I blame Stan though.

Oh and I would say that Jay Tabb won't probably start tomorrow's game,despite all the injuries we have.Given our likely defence it promises to be another bad beating for us tomorrow night. :(

A funny story i heard about the Irish FA was when international week comes round the various countries fa's send out to the clubs notification of the players they are calling up from them. The Irish FA sent Spurs one informing them of Andy Reid's call up. Spurs said 'great thanks for that but Andy Reid plays for Charlton!' Finger on the pulse that lot!

we're trying to work out where his best position is, where did he play for you guys mainly?

from the little we've seen of him (thanks to our an excuse for a manager) he looks a cracking player, and seems a nice lad too - which is rare in football

pretty sure its the left side, but i think he can play in the center as well. accroding to FM 06 he's left right and center

There's a cause for debate. He played mainly left midfield but is not your traditional winger but when he played in the centre he was more effective going forward but not the best defensively. He also played on the right 'cos he was the only one who could make a go of it when we short of bodies. Oh, and he sometimes played up front. And in one game who took all the free kicks and corners with either foot depending on where the dead ball was which I've certainly never seen before.

Give him back to us for the rest of the season and we'll work it out for you. He's wasted sat on your bench.

To answer your question though, I reckon left mid but don't expect him to be a flying winger.

You're right he's a great lad, sorely missed.He can play anywhere but I think he is most effective playing in the hole behind the forwards and running at defenders.
Amazed he can't get a regular start with you

Seemed to have some of his best games in the middle for us, but maybe that said more about the other midfielders. Can play on either wing and with his size maybe his best option in the Championship. Always prepared to take players on and as for being a nice guy, stands head and shoulders above the majority. Try searching for the thread when he left us, that will tell you exactly what we thought of him.

I wish he would get a start for us! possibly on Saturday, altho with our Mickeh's philosophy of give it to the centre back and lump it up to the big man upfront to lose, maybe he'd be wasted

..........don't know how old you are, covcityfcdotcom, but his best position is as an old-fashioned attacking left-half or an inside left (and if you're too young to know what I'm on about, ask someone slightly 'more mature'.......); he's not an out-and-out striker, but he does have a good eye for goal.......

....he is an ace bloke, wish we had had a manager who could have seen what a player he is......you wouldn't have got him on the cheap then......and if your manager is having second thoughts, but would like to keep him match fit......yes please, we'd have him back like a shot (and I believe he'd welcome coming 'home' as well.....)

Always felt he was best in that 'hole' position, the attacking midfielder in a 4-4-2 or especially a 3-5-2. Surprisingly successful in the air and in the tackle, when he turns and runs at opponents he's awesome. Can strike a ball from the edge of the box with success.

I think of him as a Schole-type player more than anything. It's an excellent reference point, IMO.

And like Mr Scholes, he is one supremely good man. Treat him right and he'll be in the sort list of 'legends' for your club as well. :sorted:

Jay is a top bloke and footy player, I would go so far as to say unique....

Left or Right wing, but also affective thru centre mid, if the other midfielders are secure.....

Mazy runs through the centre with terrier-like tenacity, head always up and looking for the opportunities; superb crosses from the left and good ones from the right; pin-point corners; dogged determination all over the park; no feigning and little complaining; genuine affection and respect for the fans. And how we miss him.

Thats exactly what hes used too with martin allen,and he was wasted,
