He (apparently) did as part of a longer tirade saying that he didn't rate him as a man or a player and that he wasn't even Irish, eg he was a plastic paddy - which is I suspect why he used the word English.....

Keane could have used any selection of epithets when giving his opinion of McCarthy, but when he added the (entirely unnecessary) "English", his mask slipped.

Which is not to say I would define Keane solely by any anti-English prejudice he may be harbouring.

Rather, as someone with a mindset whose default setting is one of violence and aggression, he will use whatever insult which first comes to mind when he is attacking someone.

It's not unlike eg John Terry, who simultaneously can be a big mate of Didier Drogba AND racially abuse Anton Ferdinand. Suarez is another one.

So if someone was a fairly placid person (& I am not talking about Keane) and got punched in the face, became angry and punched the assailant back - does that mean that they have an inherent violent streak?

Yep, an Irish international who walked out on the country in the middle of a tournament and a "Plastic" who served the same country with distinction as both Player and Manager.

I guess it must be the same distinction which Keane famously made when he recently declared he "never went out to injure opponents, just hurt them" [sic].

There is a difference between possessing a tendancy towards violence and being prepared to use physical force in order to defend yourself.

And the point about Keane is that it I doubt whether it would always take him to be punched in the face first before he'd use his own fists.

I don't know the man himself, but I would be prepared to bet that if you took away the millions, the smart suits and big house in Cheshire; the fame, adulation and deference which goes with being a Man United player; and the Agents and PR Advisers etc, he'd be just another Cork Langer, hanging around on street corners and getting into trouble.

Sky used to do it when they first broadcast Premiership football - so the technology has been available for about twenty years at a guess.

I expect his point was exactly that, to make sure MM knew he was not Irish and he that played for and was badly managing his counties football team. Whilst he is at it he could call A Townsend the same thing as he one anti English irritant if I ever saw one. The ref makes an appalling decision giving a free kick against England and he always chips in with something like "a clumsy unnecessary foul by the England player there". I am sure he does it just to wind the English up as he made the wrong decision when choosing an international side. I am sure he would have got caps had he remained loyal to his own country but he jumped ship very early.

Commentators and pundits there is a difference. I agree with keane commentators are boring and often would be better staying quiet for longer periods than they currently do. Pundits just dish out the drivel
