Absolutely no smoke without fire, something happened for it to end like this. We are not a club that has a habit of treating players poorly and just throwing them on a scrapheap, we just don't do it. That aside Jonathan Douglas was absolutely instrumental in getting us out of that poxy division and for that I will always be grateful. Thank you Dougie!

Jonathan Douglas

Can only judge on what I know - been great for us over the years, shame it hasn't worked out for whatever reasons and I'm glad he's sorted himself out at a decent level.

Jonathan Douglas

Good riddance, I don't know why he's so surprised how it all ended. A bit of respect for the man paying your large salary is not an unreasonable expectation.

Yep mate, never bite the hand that feeds you.

I doubt that it's wise to mess with MD either.

Jonathan Douglas

Poor the way it's ended, from JD as much as anyone else. I don't want a team of choir boys but there are limits. As fans our loyalty is with MB.

But we should all thank Douglas for his service. He gave his all whenever the shirt was pulled on. When he arrived we were used to watching a central midfield of Bean, KOC, Owain Tudor Jones and an emerging Jake Reeves. None fit to lace Dougies boots.

We had his best years and anyone who helped us get out of that hell hole L1 is alright by me.

But we need and have better now.

Can't disagree with you at all mate, but if League One was a hell hole, what was League Two?! Marcus Bean and Kevin O'Connor were both too good for that division at the time (peak of their careers with the rest spent in League One) and played a huge part in getting us out of that horrible chapter. Let's not forget that the same way that we shouldn't belittle Douglas if we made the premier league and signed XXXinho !

Douglass was a massive part of a team that got us to the championship and kept us there...he deserves a lot of respect no matter how it ended

Jonathan Douglas

... but we've saved a year of his salary. ISTR he had a clause that he got a match to the highest paid player.

Is that how Free Transfers work? I am not sure that is the case but I am sure abee or someone can clarify the situation???

Spot on and in fairness I think he's had plenty of respect. He's not some sort of one club champion, he left Blackburn, Leeds and Swindon who all didn't beg him to stay. I think he was great for us but reckon it's time for him to go.

Jonathan Douglas

So sorry that Dougie has gone. One of my favourite players.

Now he has gone, who is now going to rent Sam's spare room?

I now have an image of JD and NS in the spare room with Sam desperately cranking up the volume on the TV to block the noises out.

With his record and performances for us along with still being in contract he must have been worth a few hundred K at least as a transfer fee. I haven't read any mention of a fee from Ipswich so presume he was released. Given that the club clearly has values below which they won't sell each player I think the fact that JD seems to have gone for nothing tells its own story.
Often when a club gives a free to a player who might otherwise command a transfer fee, that is a sign of gratitude by the club for services rendered etc.

Of course, that doesn't apply here, but the fact that his release on a free means JD can now negotiate a more lucrative contract with Ipswich, suggests to me that his contractual position with the club may actually have been a strong one.

So that when he didn't fold under the pressure the club was putting him under (train with the stiffs etc), maybe the club "blinked first" and give him what he (eventually) wanted?

I don't think he was in a weak contractual position - he could I'm sure have sat out his contract and drawn his wages while letting the club go and see if they could get a fee for him. Given that he has expressed his disappointment I suspect that he didn't get what he wanted but got a move away instead, saving the club his wages and the presence of someone who could only now be disruptive as a result of having not managed to fit in with what was asked of him. As it seems the club is looking to instill a philosophy throughout, I doubt it would have really wanted him to be anywhere near even the stiffs if it could be avoided (sending him on gardening leave though would have required them to pay up his contract to avoid an unfair dismissal claim).

A sad way to end 4 really good years with the club, but good that it was done fairly quickly after JD having been given a chance pre-season.

Sounds like you two are not endering yourselves to each other with your poor spelling.....

Re your bold, I think you're right, in that what he (ideally) wanted was to remain at GP.

But my point was that once the club decided he wasn't going to be permitted to do so, he must still have been in a strong position contractually, to ensure he left on terms which suited him i.e. on a free, whilst he still had some transfer value.

So that he'll (likely) have been able to negotiate a nice signing-on fee from Ipswich; possibly on an increased weekly wage; with a (much) better chance of playing than had he stayed at GP; and for a club which should be in the mix for the promotion race.

Agree 100% on that. :sorted:

................good reception from the faithful............

Jonathan Douglas

Changed the game, the applause for him was awful, we're 2 down and we give an oppo player a standing ovation, I loved CD and a polite clap before but during the game he was the enemy. Josh gave us space for 15 mins and we began to attack.

Jonathan Douglas

****ing standing ovation for an opposition player. Really?

I was surprised by the reception he got. (very very positive). Almost certainly a function of how we were playing at that moment in time. Substitutions certainly made a difference today.

Jonathan Douglas

Agreed. Didn't even clap him. The guy caused unrest in the dressing room for 2 managers, and is playing for the opposition!? Bloody day trippers.

Jonathan Douglas

He turned the game for us! Talk about an impact sub!

Jonathan Douglas

was the same when Charlie Mac came back...still think we could have done with him in the team today

Jonathan Douglas

I think part of the reason behind the 'standing ovation' was borne from the fan's frustrations at the performance. It seemed to spur our own players into action so no complaints from me.

Jonathan Douglas

i have no issues whatsoever clapping Douglas when he came on - it was our way of saying thanks for the last 4 years where he was instrumental in where we are right now.

Douglas is not a loss to us but as a club we should always acknowledge a player that contributed allot.

Agree I felt proud of the reception he was given

Jonathan Douglas

That was feckin embarrassing. Losing 2-0 and our supporters standing and applauding the enemy. If you did that, have a word with yourself!!!

We were trying to win a football match, it wasn't a ****ing testimonial.

Standing ovation during a game when we're 2 down ffs. I thought I was hallucinating when the people around me starting standing up. Mugs..
