Could probably start a pretty decent prison XI soon with Adam Johnson joining him soon...and Javier Mascherano being sentenced to a year also!

one law for them, one law for us.

Get more for slapping a steward at a football match.... Justice system is a joke all about either having no cash or lots of cash. Its the mugs in the middle who get shafted

Marcus Bent

Numpty. Idiot. Fool. An ass. Plus any other word/s you wish to use.

Marcus Bent

Judging by the reports of his previous arrest, the guy seems to have some fairly serious drug/personal issues.

Feel a bit sorry for him but, seriously, how do you get caught getting on it at Chessington WOA?

Marcus Bent

He has almost the same name as Marcus Bean

There is an element of risk in all substances, but cocaine leads to more nasty situations than most, in my limited experience, especially when people have prodigious sums of money.

Marcus Bent

Got away with a £385 fine, with £85 costs.
what's the point of a suspended sentence if you commit another crime and get a slap on the wrist....he cd have potentially killed a tiny child if he'd dropped that at a flaming theme park...hopefully Bent gets a proper punishment next time he messes up

The press reports say his previously suspended sentence was for affray and possession of cocaine. Maybe the courts see affray as more serious and if he had committed that again the suspended bit would have been revoked and he'd be behind bars?

I don't agree..he's a total **** and the more druggies banged up the better

Brief reference here to his time playing in Indonesia(!):

[English coach Simon] McMenemy set about crafting his new side, with one of the first major decisions being which marquee player to sign. Former Premier League players Michael Essien, Peter Odemwingie and Didier Zokora are among those to turn out in Indonesian football in recent years - but Bhayangkara's new boss was after more than star power.

"In my first spell in Indonesia I signed Marcus Bent from Birmingham. He was an incredible guy, a lovely bloke, but he took a lot of time to manage on and off the pitch because he was new to Indonesia and found the new surroundings difficult.

"I wanted to avoid that again - why sign Robin van Persie if you have to focus all your time on helping Robin van Persie settle in Indonesia? It's not fair on the other players."

McMenemy brought Marcus Bent to Indonesia from Birmingham - and learned lessons from the experience

You'll see more stories like this. HMRC are going after these "film" tax scams in a big way.

I see he played for Brentford Athletic (!) between 1995 and 1998....

We used to play them in the old Chiswick & District on a Sunday morning. Don't remember him ever playing against us!

Marcus Bent

Not defending him at all, as he doesnt sound a pleasant individual, and was obviously trying to avoid paying tax BUT...

When are HMRC going to go after the professional advisors who marketed these schemes as legal and earned fortunes from them?

(and i say that as an accountant lol)

They probably weren't illegal as such, just based on advice from a friendly barrister which proved to be incorrect. Such barristers will tell you what you want to hear.

Probably didn't involve barristers.
More likely to be questionable financial advisors / asset management bods who tried to push the boundaries of the law to avoid tax and went too far.
In some sense that's nothing wrong with that but you can imagine it was sold as all perfectly legal and no real risk of losing a fortune (as many did).

Most of the pre-packaged tax avoidance schemes are sold to the client on the basis of being backed up by barristers' opinions. However, those barristers are by no means always correct.

And the tax advisory departments of the big 4 accountancy firms and investment banks!

Quite, an opinion is just that until it’s formally tested and found to be correct, or otherwise. It would have been in the small print somewhere.
