Having been critical of Flekken earlier on this season I just wanted to say I think he’s been very good recently. I was right in front of the save from van Dijk’s header today and it was class. Won’t get talked about because the rebound went in and then called offside but showed great agility. Nothing he could’ve done for the goals either but was solid throughout.

Yes blameless today. He was very solid in his decision making, positional play & shot stopping.
Has looked assured & confident in the last few matches.

Seems to be getting a lot of stick on Twitter from quite a few Bees and the journalist. The header for the goal was low and went through his legs.

Am I missing something?

I thought he perhaps could have done better it's disappointing to be beaten with a header between your legs and he'd been good catching it today so could have come for it?

I thought he flapped at the first disallowed goal. He could have done better with the goal. Saying that, the defence also got done at the far post.

He made some good catches. Looked confident and his distribution is second to none.

No, he was excellent today. Some fans don’t watch properly. Simple as that. And I was an early critic. His decision making with regards to when and when not to catch was optimal today. Becoming more and more comfortable; more and more commanding. Good work Mark!

Re goal, he could do nothing about it. Headed down at your feet from short range, you either get lucky or you don’t. He didn’t.

There was a corner that he punched out in the first half that I swear no Brentford goalkeeper over the last 48 years that I have been watching wouldn’t have tried to catch (certain might have dropped it into the net).

The disallowed goal was not a great bit of goalkeeping either.

Their goal could have gone either way - luck isn’t in his favour at the moment for sure (Crystal Pslace goal very similar).

Sorry, but the jury is out for me. It has not been a great start for the lad, and we are going back to pre-season.

And can I just add the obligatory “I would love to be proved wrong on this”, mainly because I would.

The one he chose to punch he came through a crowd of players, was decisive, and punched emphatically towards safety. To catch would have been risky. He was really judicious with his decisions today compared to the first couple of months. And I can certainly think of BFC keepers who would have punched that. Bentley, for one. Probably most, actually, upon reflection.

Do me a favour!

He was fine, for the most part, but MOM…?!
Exactly. To be MOM, you have to have made some outstanding saves. I don’t recall any.

The goal was unlucky, the disallowed goal was very lucky.

I was reassured he was reminded he was allowed to catch the ball at half-time. In the first half he did not inspire confidence.

Had a good game tonight - made a very good save from Jesus in the build up to their disallowed goal and looked more assured from crosses than previous games.

Not sure what he could have done about the goal - Havertz was a yard out so if he saves it it is pure luck. Compared to the first few games he is far more solid and looks more comfortable.

Is this the one where he was under no pressure at all?

I’m no Flekken worrier but from the NS and imo he had to catch that one and not punch it weakly straight back to unmarked Saka, should have pushed the offside goal over from the first header and had to catch that weird effort that was hit into the ground that reared up slowly. All imo, much better in the 2nd half and needed and deserved a bit of luck with the goal.

OK, I only saw it once, but for me to shout at the television “F***ing catch it why not?” when he did not deal with it effectively explains my view.

You and Gordon Banks are obviously describing one that I didn’t see. The one I have in mind wasn’t punched weakly or to an unmarked player. I have it recorded. Will check tomorrow.

Had a decent game. As per a previous poster, I feel a lot happier overall with him compared to the start of the season.

My exact words on more than one occasion at the start of the season. Found his reluctance to catch ridiculous and extremely frustrating. Not today though.

A so-called supporter who sits near me in the South Stand spends half his time every single game slagging off Flekken (that is until he leaves with 10 minutes remaining every week!). I try to restrain myself but the time is getting closer and closer when he gets it with both barrels.

He had a really good game, there was one punch at the beginning which maybe he could have caught – but I would have to watch it back to be sure. He made a few big claims in the 2nd half and an excellent save from Jesus' header in the 1st.

As for their goal... it was headed from point blank range, Flekken got himself in the right place, positioning was fine... sometimes you save them, other times you don't.

Distribution and ball at feet work was excellent as it always is.

Anyone criticising him today... please drop your pathetic agenda.

Nice and virtuous but can you quote anyone criticising him please.

FFS. Again, a difference of opinion is not an agenda.

I support Brentford and support every player on that pitch. The ball has gone through his legs at his near post. I think he could have done better, you don't.

Flekken is not the reason we lost

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Said it for the disallowed goal too.

If opposition have a free header in the 6 yard box the goalkeeper can’t be to blame for the goal.

Thought he looked very assured in distribution. Still a bit “punchy” but he’s doing well.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Don’t wish to argue unnecessarily, and no big deal, but are you suggesting you weren’t criticising Flekken in post 1126?
Not at all, just disagreeing that it was a good punch and although he played well, nowhere near mom imo. ?
probably 11th in line for that. ?

I've seen plenty criticising him on twitter, as has been pointed out earlier, and that's what I was referring to.

If I was responding to someone in particular I would have quoted them.
Not on here NB but it’s looking grim over on Twitter.
Absolutely.

I think Priddy would have too. But different rules 50 years ago where keepers weren't a protected species especially if some one like Nat Lofthouse was attacking.

Like you I really want to be proven wrong about him. I’m sure he’s got all the building blocks and is a nice guy etc. He’s improving week by week and this season doesn’t really matter as we are in no real trouble, but we need better sooner rather than later. Hes unfortunately got the look of Bentley about him at the moment.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Guy behind me slaughtered him for the first disallowed goal and again for the goal at the end. Almost like people are waiting to blame him. I thought he looked confident from crosses, distribution top notch and generally did everything well. Got a bit unlucky with the goal and perhaps could do a bit better but not a howler by any means. Their first goal he also got unlucky, made a decent save from a close range header that looped up and back towards goal. He’s getting better each week and will be fine

Point blank range Ghoddas loses his man.

Haters are always going to find a way to hate. Quite sad really.

He was very assured, great distribution and looked a lot calmer coming for crosses, punched a couple but in dodgy areas he couldn't catch.

Actually I think you are wrong, the evidence is there every game. He has had to cope with replacing a crowd favourite , playing in a new league and having constant changes of personnel in front of him. He has coped brilliantly and will get even better. I suspect the ‘jury is still out for me’ brigade come to every game ready to pounce on any misconceived error and then amplify it.
