Flekken might be good with his feet but not so good with his goalkeeping skill set .
He should of caught cross easily for 1st goal instead of punching and they recycled the ball and scored and second should of been a routine catch when corner came across our 6 yard box we're was our keeper inside his goal. Also not helped when Collins doesn't challenge for headers.
None of these signings since been in premier league are any better than the players that come up with us from the championship.
Is De Gea still available

Goalkeepers only catch a ball when they are certain they can get two hands on it unimpeded. If not, they punch. I think most keepers would have punched that ball.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

A ball floated into the six yard box, headed from the centre of goal about 4 yards out and you're saying he has no chance of getting it? You know he's allowed to jump and put his arms up right?
It wasn’t floated in, it was played in quite flat with pace. I don’t think it was an easy ball at all for the keeper to claim. The problem was that not one of our defenders even jumped to challenge for the ball.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Mbeumo could have headed it backwards?…

Each to their own opinion but a lot happened after that punch before the ball went in the net
You're right, he could have headed it backwards. The flight of the ball didn't alter significantly though. A consequence of the punch was that the ball remained 'live' and that Everton regained posession and subsequently scored.

What Banana has posted is the after angle I stuck a video on X yesterday and the whole corner is a calamity watch Flekkens starting position he is on the back post KLP has the giant Collins Ajer Norgaard standing like statues ball comes in Flekken goes to his left then to the middle of the goal it’s a horrendous watch but Collins Norgaard Ajer just literally stand there doing sweet FA

De Gea is as bad as it gets in the air, and he’s also horrific with the ball at his feet. I’m far from convinced by Flekken, but there’s a reason De Gea is still a free agent.
For Jug Ears goal , I suggest people look at how congested the six yard box in front of him was , he got a good punch on the ball, it was bad control from Bryan that lead to the guy getting a cross in . And it was a mistake to put Jensen marking/stopping Jug Ears

Why oh why did Mbeumo just hit the ball long and out of play he got caught , no way was he going to run 3/4 of the pitch

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

I disagree the whole team where awful, but a gk that can not claim a ball in his 6 yard box is a problem they score make it 2-1 goals change games.
I suggest you look at how congested the area in front of goal was , I don’t believe any keeper could of caught the ball

Indeed, horrendous. Flekken's initial position should have enabled him to come and catch or punch the ball, but for some reason he makes the decision to go backwards into the centre of the goal. Others may not have covered themselves in glory, but a keeper has to dominate his 6-yard box. It's the number one criterion for me; all the kicking ability in the world won't make up for the consequences of being unable to dominate that area. Alvaro Fernandez couldn't do it; now we have another keeper who apparently can't do it. What's going on?

I'm sorry but the ball wasn't there to be caught regardless of whatever anyone on here says. Tarkowski is backing into him so much that Flekken can only get contact on the ball by jumping and reaching over him. To risk a catch in that situation would have been madness.

This is where the punch ended up – he executed it perfectly. The coaches will be clipping it up and replaying it to him as an example of what he's done well ffs.

Because despite all of that, 1, perhaps 2, of the 3 goals happened because of his weakness in the air. Outfielders playing poorly shouldn’t make the keeper immune to criticism.
One perhaps two of the three goals happened because of rank awful defending. The same rank awful defending which led to the third goal too. Flekken needs to be better in the air but to lay the blame for any of the goals yesterday at his feet rather misses the wider issue of a defensive unit which was frankly hideous on the day.

Should have been a routine catch without doubt.

We’ve named our 25 man squad until January

I'm suprised that as Tarkowski was backing into him so much that nobody appealed vociferously for a foul on the keeper.

You don’t think the former might be some of the cause of the latter?

I think the fact we’ve barely had a settled defense all season and we’re now missing two of last season’s most reliable performers is much more of an issue. Flekken’s command of his area must improve but he’s in no way responsible for dreadful marking nor individual errors.

You really talk some reactionary b***ocks.

What is xollocks about saying our last 4 keepers haven't been good enough. Have any of them inspired you. The previous 3 were pretty decent in Raya, Bentley and Button.

What worried me was Pinnock who is normally Mr Reliable had perhaps the worst game I’ve seen him play in a Brentford shirt.

We conceded 3 goals. Could have been 4 or 5. The problem was not Flekken.
Yes we could have conceded 4-5 the fact we didn’t wasn’t because of any wonder saves from flekken. Like I have said catch a corner in the 6 yard box we don’t go 2-1 down simple as that.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

If that is your opinion. For me a gk should be commanding and catching balls in the 6 yard box.
But if he can’t get there because of his pathway blocked Lewis Potter we’re running round Flekkin. Oliver pulled them out and had words with the two but that did not stop it

Yea crazy to think a gk making his way past anyone in the 6 yard box. If you think a gk staying rooted to his line instead of claiming a corner in the 6 yard box is acceptable gk that is up to you.

The picture shows that the punch worked, and a catch would have been very risky. The vid shows that he does not cover himself in glory, but what that angle does not truly show is that is was a superb ball into the box, the flight being beautifully curved with dip (no not salsa). It deceived the defenders as much as the keeper. No way was he the problem yesterday. But it is always consoling to have a whipping boy, and Saman may not play enough games to cover that.

Agree, but why did the defence look suspect. Many on here are very concerned about the keeper, so I guess the defence have as well. We have plenty more issues other than the keeper.

Be stronger and run through them.you can guarantee Pickford would not be letting someone head it in from 4 yards. It may not have been his fault yesterday but when the rest of the team are having an off day you could do with your keeper having a blinder.did he make a save

It’s not about having a whipping boy it’s about confidence in what is called the best league in the world. If you’re referring to the first goal with that cross do you think Raya would have caught it or punched it ?

Yes and no. Not directly responsible, but perhaps indirectly.

We all agree that Flekken, indeed any goalie must dominate their box. If they don't, then defenders start to lose confidence that the keeper will claim the ball and try to compensate by changing position of going for a ball they shouldnt . Look at Hickey's back pass last week, that he would probably have made to Raya, but Flekken reacted differently. It puts doubt in a defender's mind, so they behave differently.

No doubt Flekken is a good player, but he needs to build understanding with his defence.

And on the punch, every corner has a congested box. In most cases, any 6'5" keeper should be aiming to catch. If they drop it due to being fouled, the ref will always back the keeper.

Raya literally punched a cross today that plenty of Arsenal fans are saying he should have caught ? so what's your point?

Didn’t see the game and not interested in watching other teams. Could he have caught it or was that the only thing he could have done? Flekken could have caught the cross for what eventually was their first goal, that’s my point which was my question to Mobbeez!

Not at all. If we could convince him that he is joining a growing, building club and would have the opportunity to win trophies and play in Europe, he'd sign in a flash. Money is very much secondary to professional footballers. As long as they can pay the rent and Council Tax.

There were others more culpable then Flekken yesterday but it wasn't an assured performance from him for sure.
Needs to find a different level of assurance in the PL. However the defence in front of him was very poor yesterday.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Plenty of others ahead of him yesterday in the "had a stinker" table.

I don't think he was at fault for any of the goals, with several others getting out muscled and out fought in and around our box.

Potter’s knee high to a grasshopper. Flekken is six and half foot and built like a brick outhouse. It’s his area to command, if he flattens his own player that’s just unfortunate.

Apart from Bentley’s season of horrors where he made more errors than any other goalkeeper in the Championship. It is quite amazing how history seems to have been rewritten on that.

Just to give some balance after the Sky commentator’s remarks on the first goal, the MOTD guy said ‘Flekken is nowhere’ on the second.

As for retreating to his goal line, he actually goes back further than that, which is bizarre.

I fully accept though that the defence has got to do its job in that situation - there were enough ‘big lads’ about to deal with it. However, whoever made the decision to put Jensen on Tarkowski needs to give their head a wobble.

Goalkeeper recruitment since our old goalie coach has left has been terrible just look at the last 4 keepers simply not good enough for us or this league.maybe we should be looking at keepers who are used to playing in the English league.that won't hide inside the goal when a cross comes over. But I think the recruitment for the 1st team hasn't been good enough since we have been in premier league we have spent lots of money but none of them have improved the starting 11 and our best players are the players who came up from the championship.
Apart from bee mee of course. And I'm guessing we have spent close to a 100 million quid.

The description of the ball into the box relates to the superb corner taken for the second.

As for David, even if we limit ourselves to the Premier League years, I have seen him catch, punch and flap at crosses: so how could either of us know.

I stand by my opinion that I do not think most keepers would have caught the ball for that first goal, and the punch was effective.

It's very difficult to argue with this. However, it isnt as simple as that. So many factors e.g. injuries etc.

I think Flekken will come good.

I stand by my opinion that the players we have purchased are not improving the squad right now. But then we finished 9th last season.

I'm an emotional mess ? ?

Our recruitment recently hasn't been of the success standard of when we were in the championship for sure.the big money buys like KLP, onyeka, damsgaard, ajer haven't really got going properly yet .schade looks promising but you'd sort of expect more than 1 goal for an outlay of £25m.The keeper is ok
