Deal with magistrates a fair bit and am always amazed at how lenient they are even when faced with the most damming evidence

Nope dealt with by the magistrates as they retained jurisdiction. Judges in the crown courts and district judges in the mags are much more sensible and reasoned in the way they dish out sentences. However some are proper plonker a also as they feel non cps prosecutions are beneath them.
