Maybe so, but far kinder than you've been about one of our former players. The fact that Bees fans have been so quick to jump to the defence of one of their former players should be an indication of the high regard in which he was held and you don't draw the sort of defence from supporters of your former club if you're sh*t do you.

He may be no Grant Holt but it seems to me that many of your fans had made their minds up about him before he'd kicked a ball for you.

We have no self-serving purpose in running the guy down - why would we?

It is our money, and we all wanted him to start banging in the goals, setting them up, roughing up defences, working hard off the ball etc ... of course we did, even though to lose Holt was devastating!

What we got though is not your last year's player - we have somone who cannot even time a jump for a header, let only win it and get it to our players, cannot control the ball, is slow, doesn't find a man with his passing, has no trickery when on the ball etc

If only it were different, we would have taken to him - of course we would

Nathan Elder

Hope Nath finds himself a new club and proves himself. I think L2 is probably his level but well capable of contributing to the beter teams at that level if he has the right players around him.

Top guy, good player and great memories!:sorted:

Nathan Elder

I'm sure Nathan himself is having a whale of a time, given that he was pretty much slagged off from the start of the season for not being Grant Holt, as far as I could tell.

Now he's been made a scapegoat for your poor cup game - in which he barely figured - so I hope he gets a move away to somewhere where he's a bit more appreciated and then maybe he will be able to show his qualities. I hope it costs you a fortune in the meantime.

Quite right.

As others have said he did lots of the above for us. I wonder if his injury has taken more out of him than anyone realised. Have you thought about getting him some help to get over the psychological effects?

I would have him back tomorrow and pay his cab fare, if I was Andy Scott.
I fully understand all parties reasons for allowing him to leave, however, Carl Cort is no Nathan Elder and likewise Elder is no Carl Cort.
We have been under pressure at the back this season because we have had no outlet up front to knock the ball upto in the hope that it might stick and the defence can get a breather. Nathan not only won plenty of Aerial challenges, he also directed the ball onto Bees players or at least into danger areas. On top of that he was a nuisance at set pieces and most teams spent two players dealing with him meaning that others around the team benefited.
His hold up play is also better than Cort has showed. On the flip side Cort and Charlie appear to be forming a partnership with both parties chipping in with goals instead of just one. If you are going to challenge you need strikers plural scoring goals in this division but you also need to create enough chances that the strikers can benefit.
Nathan probably had as many assists last season as any midfielder in the squad!

Nathan Elder

Hi Guys,

well he didn't last long! Any chance of you taking him back? Am sure you would get him on a free!

He has been pure pants!

Cheers and good luck with your season.

Bizarre behaviour publicising a lot of that unless you are a manager trying to take the heat off yourself. Why wouldn't you do all of the loan arranging privately rather than damaging the players' confidence still further by sticking it on the website before any deal has been done.

Does seem like a desperate move. Like you say, taking the heat off by agreeing with the disgruntled supporters.

I can't imagine that there is a great atmosphere in training. Who's next to be hung out to dry?

We never saw him play after his injury, being out for 2 months probably hasn't done his career much good.

Albeit I agree with much of what you say regarding Nathan's qualities, I disagree completely with your view that Nathan held the ball up better than Cort. His ability to hold the ball up if one of Cort's best qualities IMHO, whilst it was one of the weakest parts of Nathan's game.

:imwith: Cort's hold up play is the best I've seen for many a year and the control of the football is something Nathan could only dream about.

I've a lot of time for Elder but he is not a League One player.

Absolutely. I've got a lot of time for Nathan due to the stint he did for us last season and on his pre injury form I'd say he could do a reasonable job for a middling to upper level 4th tier side. But Cort is light years ahead of him in terms of quality - its the one area of the side where we have without doubt upgraded since last season.

i think your post is fair enough but this does show the difference between our manager and yours I'm afraid.

yours should have done more homework on elder and realised that it would be difficult to come back from such an horrific injury. nice guy apparently, but it was always going to difficult for nathan to recover psychologically from what happened.

andy scott however must have realised this and thought 'thank you very much' when he was offered money for a player whose value had decreased.

nathan clearly thought he could do with the new challenge but in hindsight probably realises that expectation up at 'the new gay meadow'* would have been really high following in the boots of grant holt. unfortunately for this reason, he seems to have become their very own murray jones.

i hope nathan finds another club and does the business for them but i also hope that simpson continues to struggle. losing to staines? dear dear dear.

* is that the name of your new stadium or has the 'gay' been dropped? if so, why?

Nathan Elder

Well, Ive not got anything new to say about this all, but I think its obvious that we all have a lot of respect and love for Nathan, probably because i think he had the same for us.
I remember when we lost at home to Bury at home, after AS had taken over 2 years ago, a few people were booing the players off the pitch, and i stood and clapped them as i usually do, and I swear to this day that Nathan looked up, saw me and clapped back, and every home match after that for the next year and a half, he would look up to where i sit and we would give each other a clap. And that s when i first realised it was love...

anyway, the point is that yes, Cort is better, his hold up play and his flick-ons are class, but Elder is one of the good guys, and he is one of us, and will always be welcome back to GP.

This is comedy gold lol

Nathan Elder

If you could combine Cort's touch, vision, heading ability and football brain with Nathan's naked aggression, pace and energy then you really would have a player on your hands.

Nathan Elder

:imwith: Cort's hold up play is the best I've seen for many a year and the control of the football is something Nathan could only dream about.

Indeed, i am staggered that some people are still criticizing Cort. Other than possibly Dickson he has been our best player for weeks and weeks.

Nathan Elder

Doubt if Hull are lining up a bid! :-0

That's an in joke, try reading the Michael Turner Thread.

I think the "STFCFanInPeace" name is a bit misplaced...

I think it's quite apt.

He can support Staines Town without changing his user name.

What as Simpson thinking!

No doubt we won't be able to offload anyway, unfortunately - Unibond clubs don't have much money.

Nathan isnt League 1 standard. move on

Nathan Elder

Fk me, the bloke has only ever scored 5-6 goals a season so why does anyone expect anything else?

he is a bit of a heskey, he used to worl so hard and won so much ball and created havoc and gaps for other people.

Always so frustrating when you think he is a so close to being a super player but he just does not get into good goalscoring positions often enough and then fluffs it when he does.

He has so much potential it is frustrating.

Nathan Elder

Im a Shrewsbury Fan and i have to say i was delighted when we signed big nath. i do have to be honest and say he hasnt performed well enough at the moment. I am still confident he can show STFC fans and the manager what he is about. i went to GP last season with shrewsbury and was impressed with Elder, him and Mcdonald worked well.

I am still backing Nathan to come good and i am confident he will convince the fans

Do you really think that will happen after his public slating by Simpson?

Nathan Elder

:imwith: Cort's hold up play is the best I've seen for many a year and the control of the football is something Nathan could only dream about.

You must have been to away games then because where as I agree his touch when he gets the ball defies his height, this being why he was once valued at £7m, to hold the ball up a player must use his physical strength to keep his body between the ball and the defender marking him.
The other players must feel confident in the outlet and would under pressure look to find that outlet a lot more often than we have this season compared to last. Cort is not imo using his strength enough and is hoping to rely on his touch being enough. The defenders in the bottom two tiers have no respect for past reputation, if you let them get in front of you, and Cort does, they will.
I am hopeful that Strevens will be better suited to that role but I certainly dont see Cort as being better than Elder in his contribution to the team!

And could well be World Cup bound as well if New Zealand beat Bahrain on Saturday! He can play at the World's biggest football competition, but not for Shrewsbury? The Shrews clearly don't know a good thing.......

Nathan Elder

i would have him back just to lift the crowd again, his song was awesome and as i feel the crowd is becoming slightly flat. He maybe the boost we are after. :sorted:

You acknowledge Cort's ability and previous valuation at £7m yet you feel he contributes less than Elder. On the occasions I have seen Cort play this season he more often than not has brought the ball down and layed it off to a red and white shirt before the defender has reacted, something Elder was not capable of. The problem is that nothing then happens afterwards and Cort hasn't the pace to spin and get into the box. The discussion that Cort needs to be playing higher up the pitch has already been covered. I do agree that Strevens is probably a better option in terms of actually holding onto the ball for a longer period of time, whilst dropping deeper. Although I'm a big fan of charlie, Strevens and Cort could be our best option.

I'm inclined to agree with you; it must be worth a try.

I'd prefer us discussing the acquisition of a player better that Cort, rather than an old boy rejected by his new club. Elder is no longer our player and was a smashing piece of business... let's move on.

 I don't understand any of that I'm afraid. Elder wasn't very good at holding the ball up whilst Cort is IMO  And as for your last comment, Dickson aside, Cort has been heads and shoulders above the rest of the team in the past month or so,

:imwith: Him and Dickson must be the first names on the teamsheet at the moment, we have been pap for the last 6 weeks but Cort seems to be getting better and better as he adjusts to this level. Elder is not anywhere near his class when the ball gets pumped upfield (which is happening far too often at the moment for my liking). I hope he turns things around and with some confidence behind him could be an adequate League 2 striker especially compared to some of the donkeys which inhabit that division.

Nathan Elder

I'd have him back.
He would work hard as always and hes a nuisance of a striker to play against.
He did very weel start of last season watch the dvd and he scored some good goals.
I wouldnt mind Nath for on the bench and bring him on, but Cort playing good now and Strevens looking sh*t hot last Saturday and Charlie is Charlie bit hard, Especially as we have Kabba-do on the bench and Moses out on loan oh and Myles who plays as a striker

Yes and look how well we have done in that time! Get a grip owlsmoor, nice feet and a nice touch dont make a hold up player. His goal per game ratio is why he is here, not his contribution to the pattern of play.

Cort is different gravy to Nathan in everything bar fitness. Nathan is a lovely guy and has been very unlucky in many respects...but he's not a footballer IMHO

Nathan Elder

ROB, give it up. Elder is a very poor mans Cort.

ROB, give it up. Elder is a very poor mans Cort.

TBH they're very different players.

Cort is not a battering ram, he wouldn't chase into corners, try and barge through defenders or run the channels like Elder did.
However, the other aspects of his game, touch, football brain, finishing prowess, passing etc are way ahead of Elder.
Cort likes to play deeper than Elder did and IMHO is happier with his back to goal - as I said, different type of player.

The only thing they had in common was height and aerial ability - I reckon we'd conced fewer goals from set pieces with them both back defending.
