New Rivalries

Our ONLY rivalry this season is watford.........its still on going and the scenes after both the last games at gp and vr showed the yooooof on both sides take it seriously too i dont like em and never will....we wouldnt have a song about em and still sing it regularly if there wasnst a rivalry/history there

Celtic v. Rangers, Spurs v. Arsenal, Liverpool v. Everton: big “rivalries“ are must win games that leave you feeling sick for days if you lose.

I’ve disliked Watford since the battles (on and off the pitch) in my own late 70s yoof, but we’ve only played them, what, a dozen? times in the 40+ years since. So, whilst I agree about the history, you have to have regularity - the burning desire to stick it to them next time - as well as the dislike, to make it a rivalry. Maybe playing them more often will rekindle it, but I doubt it. I’d rather they get relegated to play Luton and forget about them for another five or ten years.

It’ll have to do, though. It’s a tough life, having to make do with novelty rather than rivalry this year ?... Maybe we’ll get to go to the Cottage or the Bush in the cup ?

I would say Chelsea would be the closest, and will probably be lightly marketed as such.

Watford are probably the team I dislike the most in the division.

I would take some pleasure from beating Leeds/Aston Villa, but that's only because of the staggering arrogance of their fanbase.

I don't see anything to replace Fulham or QPR though, and that's fine by me.

After England stopped playing Scotland every year, it soon ceased to have any resonance for them.

Though not for the Scots.

I wouldn't like Brentford to be seen as "needy" like our Tartan Tranny cousins, so no artificially concocted or resurrected "rivalry" for me, thanks.

Internationals is a different topic though.
Internationals are different in the sense some dont follow it as much, club before country, although id say the fans cared more about it the other night than the England players, after the performance.

Very true, forgetting the big rivals like Liverpool/Everton, Arsenal/Spurs and Rangers /Celtic, often the "need" for rivals is orchestrated by the lesser/lower club, so lets not go down that route to others amusement.

Got to be Watford this season. They are nearer to me than Chelsea by one mile and there is "history" although you have to be in your late 50s to understand it fully. I wouldn't mind creating an irrational rivalry with Manchester United who we haven't played for nearly 50 years as I can't think of a reason to dislike them other, of course, than the fact that they are Manchester United. Apart from the Forest Greens and Harrogates they are the only club left that I have never seen us play as I couldn't get up there for the LC game in the 70s.

Rivalries come in different forms, the big ones are often local and longstanding but other, nasty little ones can just pop up temporarily through a niggly match or some random incident. It doesn't take much for me to 'hate' another team - I remember Wolves (their management team and fans) a few seasons back when we were competing for promotion in L1 being the most arrogant bunch of c*nts I've ever come across and have generally despised them ever since. I really f*cking hope we put one over on them this season. The same with Sheff Utd but we obviously we won't be playing them for a little while yet

If we create a new rivalry I hope it’s a weird one like Wycombe v Colchester (iirc some ancient beef fighting to get out of the Conference which nobody much remembers the detail of). If Notts County ever came into our level or in a cup game I’d enjoy bringing up Gary Owers’ disgraceful knee walking to mock Evo. Something esoteric about a ginger steward at Everton would do.

You can add Newcastle v Sunderland to that list of proper derbies. And Chertsey v Abbey Rangers too. ?

Have to say I’ve got an irrational hatred for Liverpool, prob because EVERYONE supported them when I was young. Would LOVE IT if we put one over on them...

Otherwise, one of the most enjoyable things of the first couple of seasons in the championship was watching the absolute horror and disgust from supporters of the big dinosaur clubs on being beaten by ‘teams like brentford’. Hopefully we’ll get to rattle a few more, even larger, cages next season!

Means more to England fans maybe, but ask a German fan and he/she will tell you their big rivals are the Dutch.

And I guess any Argentinian would say Brazil.

I remember being more scared walking into the Shed with the Stretford Enders, even though The World's End never even crossed the road, than I was when we ended up on the pitch,. to the chant of "if you want to stay alive. Get out of the Rookery". I mean, in the Annals of Human Conflict, it was a bit like being pecked by a budgerigar.
Personally, I don't need rivalry, real or manufactured as part of a cheap marketing ploy, any more than I need plastic tat (apart from a particular fridge magnet that I must have).

You can’t just invent rivalries. The M4 derby….. The 888 derby…. It’s all b***ocks.

Rivalries need to be built over time. Leeds and Birmingham etc aren’t rivals. Yes, I want to beat those clubs more than others but realistically there’s no true rivalry there at all.

Even a lot of Fulham and QPR fans don’t regard us as rivals (and we failed to sell our allocations to the last two games against both) so even those are a bit one sided in the rivalry stakes.

On a weeks holiday in Cornwall and went to St Ives today, only saw a bright yellow hornet coming towards me,had to cross over the road in case I said something

There’s still a rivalry, be a political one.

International rivalries can be very different to club rivalries, not just neighbours
