............................having been to B'muff,Yeovil and Posh this month already this afternoons non-display was the worst of them all...........what non-prescriptuions drugs is the manager on ,to pick that starting line-up ?????????watching the ten players warm up ,I thought I had sussed the teams formation but as soon as the game stated I realised I was oh so wrong...........a creative centre midfielder at centre half and a non threatening right side of Kev and Wright...and a bench with our best two right side attacking options.........the only outlet was to be Myles.............a coma inducing first half failed to warm me.............the second half was just as painful........a toothless midfield contributed nothing............fair play to Simpson for trying...............it has to get better .......and soon........

Oldham Match Reports

Oumare Tounkara was superb for Oldham today, a right handful for our back four and lead the line excellently, just the sort of player we could do with.
He's a kid too. 20 I think. On loan fron Sunderland but I think he's out of contact there at the end of the season.

If the lad could shoot straight (lacks composure in front of goal so today's effort was not a certainty once he was put through) and jump more than two inches off the ground he'd be the best player I've ever seen at this level! He looks a bit like a Heskey sized lump, but is significantly more skilful. One report in a Yorkshire paper after we beat Huddersfield described him as "a wrecking ball of a human being". Quite apt.

I thought he had a good game at your place, but his workrate in every game this season has been tremendous.

And that's where Oldham have struck gold in Paul Dickov. A lucky punt on an untried manager. He has fired off those on a wage to reserve team football or loan deals elsewhere. He has given some young players an opportunity and used the loan market well. And despite every player on the pitch today having their own indiviual frailties they all work hard for each other. They all want to succeed and the sum of the parts is so much greater than it should be as a result. Average age 22 I think.

I'm not here to gloat at Brentford. I sat through some turgid football last season and 2010/11 is like a rebirth for Oldham Athletic. It's been great so far. On the edge of the play-offs on a shoestring. Nothing today suggests that Oldham will finish higher than 8th but I'd be surprised if it was much lower come May. I've seen this side lose a 3-0 lead after being sensational and totally in control. Southampton mullered them 6-0 and I don't think the players had an off day. They even went to Peterborough and led 2-0 before losing 5-2. Shocking scores, but I didn't feel bad about them I didn't feel that my side had rolled over and died because they weren't up for it.

For all his limitations as a player, Dickov was a hard worker. He's got players who want to work for him.

As I stated before, I didn't see much to excite me about Brentford. I felt Oldham should have pressured more and wrapped the game up well before you pulled one back. Based on the two performances I've seen this season I don't think you're safe from relegation. But you did show enough endeavour in the early minutes at Griffin Park and the last few minutes at Boundary Park to suggest that there's enough about the side to escape the drop.

Maybe you should train this lot as not sure regards there current training runs are adequate also the runs I do with marines is probably more than there taught

I'm an all arms PTI so know a little bit about training and motivating people . Doing my FA level 3 next year so I can help coach a local team , nearly got selected for the Commonwealth games at cycling . Won numerous events and came 7th in the Services steeplchase champs despite being ballbagged haven done a 90 mile bike race the day before. Footballers play 90 mins twice a week if they are unlucky.

Good to hear of a fellow serviceman . Not as fit as I used to be as I'm now doing a degree and trying to get to the games.

Thats my braggin over .

Seriously though where has the passion and hunger to win gone ?

I've not been this fed up since we got relegated and that was coming anyway that year !!!

Oldham Match Reports

By the sound of it no. OTJ was the one who played Oldham's forward onside  Someone posted about their Norwich mate laughing when they were told OTJ was playing CB. I suspect Pim, Spillane were carrying injuries and that Bush couldn't be trusted......... sad sad times
Haven't read anymore than this, if OTJ played CB than why the F did we let McCracken leave????? We are joke team tactically

Oldham Match Reports

Seems that I am first back.....Not much to get excited about today.....one shot in anger the whole game....at least Simpson seems to know where the goal is......we always seemed to bee on the back foot....the new bloke seems to bee ok.....Lee unlucky with the first goal as it struck his foot on the way in....could have been deflected wide....MOM really hard one...maybee Leon for some good headers and tackles.....like the look of Oldhams striker...put me in mind of Akinde on a good day......much more mobile than any of our forwards....all in all a bit of a sh*te day....this was my consulation prize for missing our Wembley final..ah well......YOU REDS.....

£70 on petrol, 430 miles from start to finnish. £20 on match ticket. £10 on food/drink etc. That's it, No more away games for me whilst Andy Scott is in charge. The football is horrendous, it's tedious & very difficult to watch!

Paul Jewell recently described little Doncaster as The Championships version of Arsenal, I'm not sure of an appropriate description for us... An unimiginative, sluggish version of Dave Bassett's Wimbledon???

The mood in the away end was depressing, the numbers also. It reflected the general feeling around. I gave up chanting after 50 minutes or so, we'd not manage to get a shot on target for another 30 minutes. Sure, we had the odd free kick won through hard work & determination, although Craig Woodman's set pieces made Marc Laird's corners on Monday night look impressive. Clearly we're set up to stop teams (which we're evidently not very good at) with nothing going forward. Personally it's draining the enthusiasm all the time, & like many on here I've had enough. I'm still attending home games, but BFC is a chore & I urge the club to act.

Today was more of the same old rubbish! Not one positive, nothing learned, no improvement. More of the same for the next game, Why????

Oldham Match Reports

Wimbledon used to work their socks off. We don't

Oldham Match Reports

just gone through the posts it seems im right AS does not know his team at all! tbh i didnt think we would get a result at oldahm but to lose so negativley yet again im slowly turning and thinking league season over and time to get a manager in who will get the best out of the team and knows where to strengthen next season.

Oldham Match Reports

God this thread makes for depressing reading. Never did I think that I'd be glad that current financial circumstances have meant I've had to stop the away games for a while.

I just feel sorry for those who make the trip and had to endure what sounds like a shambolic team selection and performance. We've all been watching football long enough to understand that teams go through bad patches but ultimately as fans what we want to see are signs that the manager is capable of recognising the problems and taking steps to address them. How on earth can yesterday's team selection give fans any confidence that AS is doing either of these things ?

Oldham Match Reports

Didn't go yesterday, but fair play to all that did. Time for Scott to go, his team selections make no sense, the players look to me like they don't want to play for him we seem unable to string more than two passes together, and as much as it pains me to say this, if I didn't have a season ticket there is no way on this planet I would shell out £20.00 to watch that crap. Go Scott now.

 The bloke has gone out of his way to interact and give another side of the story, he isnt taking thee piss or being rude. Dont have a dig just because he didnt mention the Bees all that much. He said it isnt focussed on the bees anyway. Opinion5U thanks for your view. :sorted:
To be honest I missed post 58 of which he expressed how poor we were and even though we got a goal back never really threatened. So,fair do's there.I have no problems with fans from our opponents coming on here,it fact it lightens up the thread more often than not.

It's been great so far. On the edge of the play-offs on a shoestring. Nothing today suggests that Oldham will finish higher than 8th but I'd be surprised if it was much lower come May.

And there's the issue. You're on a shoestring and as such you're expectations are more realistic. Brentford apparently have their highest ever playing budget (bar the Ron Noades plaything season) and we've spent pretty big - certainly more than anything that us Bees fans would usually expect. As such, I think most of us expected Brentford to at least be competetive in the league this season and by and large, we haven't been. Despite what others on this thread have said, we DO have good players. Unfortunately, the man pulling their strings is currently failing in his task. Miserably.

I agree we do have some good players, but we also have at least 2 who aren't good enough and yet always get picked ahead of better players who warm the bench. Yesterday was a prime example when THE MANAGER picks a player who struggled in one position, then get's moved back to his usual position, where he's just as ineffective, and when the player who SHOULD have started comes on he scores..........things are badly wrong.

That's the worse thing, IMO we have a great set of players who with a decent leader and motivator could make them into a great team. These players need to start believing in themselves!! They should be played where they are used to playing, where they feel comfortable. Surely this is the easy part of managing a team!!

Watching AS on the O/S is painful, he has lost it big time!! It's never his fault is it!?!?! For your own health Mr Scott step down!

Oldham Match Reports

Wimbledon used to work their socks off. We don't

If we carry on in this vein, then AFC Wimbledon will pass us in about three seasons, on their way back to the top flight.
I remember it happening some 30 years back. They came up, they went back down, they came up again and they were gone. We just trod water in bloody Division Three.

Your reasons are why I stopped going to away games this season as well. It's just a waste of time and effort as well as money more importantly

Oldham Match Reports

Nice report opinion5U from the Oldham point of view but if your coming on here just to blog about your team, remember there are two sides out there so some reference to how we played and a bit of name dropping of some of our players will not go amiss.Otherwise it's all rather boring, which it was.BYE.
It's a fair call. I went to watch Oldham, not Brentford. I can name all the Oldham players and only have a vague awareness of your lot.

If an opponent stands out I'll usually clock the number and maybe the name and pass comment. Perhaps that explains my lack of reference to Brentford players.

Your goal was taken superbly. But he had so much space my instinctive concern was which centre half was out of position and why - not the name of the scorer.

If I'd been looking at things as a Brentford fan I'd perhaps have referenced "the ginger lad" and "the big striker" for Oldham. The other 9 are capable of playing far better and I doubt many would stick in the minds of the visiting supporters yesterday.

Something changed the complexion of the game in the last 10-15 minutes yesterday. Not sure if it was Oldham sitting back, the substituions by your manager or a tactical change. If it's one of the latter two then perhaps your manager isn't a lost cause.

Oldham Match Reports

Very poor display by Brentford.

You can forgive almost everything if there is 100% effort. There wasn't.

Quite why Spillane was on the bench and Wright chosen is difficult to fathom.

Taffy looked like he could be useful but wasted at centre back. Why was Pim on the bench when we could have played him and Taffy in place of Kev?

Laird anonymous. Woodman's free kicks woeful.

Depressing that not long ago we were 3 points from the play-offs, now we are only 5 points from relegation and playing the worst 'football' seen by any side in our division this season.

Next games are Yeovil, Dagenham and Plymouth. 7 points would be very acceptable but looking like an impossibility.

With no pace in the team except for Karleigh we are always struggling to score as our forwards have the ball lumped forward to them as they have their back to goal and never have a ball played through with the forwards on the last defenders shoulder to spin and run.

Sadly, Andy has really got to accept that his obvious desire to leave is having an adverse effect on his players.

Apart from choosing Simpson just because of his goal the MOM is almost impossible to decide.

Oldham Match Reports

Just got back, what waste of time, money and effort.
We did not look like creating anything until we were two behind, and even then we were disjointed and bettered by an average team.
I can't explain the line up OTJ got stitched up and made errors in both boxes.
The usual hoofball out to the wing to Weston who only got going, like the rest, late on.
Simpson's goal was a good take, but i thought 2-1 flattered us.
We did nothing for 70 minutes and couldn't hold out for a draw.
Wright was very poor again, inviting runs in to the box, not marking well and barley crossing the halfway line.

Oldham Match Reports

Thanks, good post and fair points, didn't go yesterday but
can't even retort that we're too good to go down because if based on performances we're nailed on. For all that the players we have need to be galvanised and play to a system that suits and we should be fine.
The difference is the Manager has a budget of £3.5M this season and next, a figure Dickov can only dream about yet at our place after 25 mins you controlled all areas of thd game and thoroughly deserved to win and we haven't evolved or improved and that has to be down to the Manager and not the players.
While you are enjoying football again after some turgid stuff, you've been lucky enough to enjoy premiership football, cup runs etc in the nof too distant past, we've had one season in the last 50 in the second tier. The recent investment offers us a window of opportunity to get up and we're wasting it.

That is an obscene amount. I'd hazard a guess that by the end of this season the wage bill at Oldham will be half of what it was at the start. Probably well under £1m.

that has to be down to the Manager and not the players.
I'm a great fan of 7 or 8 younger players in a team with 3 or 4 wise old heads to keep things calm under pressure. Dickov's effectively gone for 10 younger players and Reuben Hazell as a wise old head - so they all panic under pressure!! But it is exciting. The thought of scraping in to the play-offs on a shoestring when 17 miles away the likes of Huddersfield might not make it is fabulous. Losing 0-6 at home didn't seem like the end of the world. Last season was all 0-0 0-1 0-2 and it felt awful. This season the players want it. They might not always deliver, but they want it to work more than I've seen since Joe Royle was in charge - when finishing 1 place above the relegation places was fantastic because your players gave it their all.

Premiership was a long time ago. Oldham have been in this division longer than anybody else. Somebody missed the boat by failing to invest at the right time. Bolton made that investment and can hold their own in the top flight with a shiny new stadium. Oldham didn't and play in a three sided freezer. You're right about not wanting to waste investment. I've been around too long to know that a rich guy will get bored of his toy and move on. So a manager who can use what's at his disposal well is much needed.

Anyway, I've waffled on for too long on your forum. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Nice one. Thanks for your intelligent posts.
I rate Dickov highly. Keith Hill too. Good managers working with little money, so they can't fake it.
One last thing, why hasn't Chris Taylor gone to a bigger club? He seems to be capable of playing at Championship level.

Oldham Match Reports

when budgets are mentioned, i presume everyone is talking about the same elements: and would these be the same at (say) Oldham?

wages / insurance / NI / agents / signing-on fees (if any) / transfer fee (if applicable)

does this playing budget include team management - coaches, physio, and their NI ? freelance scouts? do team travel expenses come out of the playing budget ? / hotels ?

or are these expenses in another budget.

abee or nick or anyone in the know ??????

Oldham Match Reports

when budgets are mentioned... abee...
This was discussed at length not so long ago, with input from the aforementioned. ISTR that it was in reference to the "10th or 12th in the league" Budget quote by Andrew Mills and my recollection is that ours included all playing costs.

Local lad who loves Latics perhaps? Grew up on the terraces and all that.

It's possible that the club paid top dollar to keep him on a longer term deal (18 months left) although I suspect not - fair deal but certainly not one that would compete with a bigger club.

Leeds used to sniff around a lot and £1m fees were rumoured. He had a habit of losing form in the transfer window so something was unsettling him. I suspect the club wanted to sell him more than he would want to leave.

He's also been injury prone for the last couple of seasons, although back to somewhere near his best now.

And without wanting to get a reaction from you guys, he can be a bit soft. That might have put off one or two potential buyers.

There is a school of thought that he's just stupid and will play for Oldham forever!

May I thank you for coming on, it's good to have away fans having their say, I'm all for it.
I would suggest that you were very good at our place and probably one of the best I have seen this season but..........I thought you were only slightly less useless than us at the weekend and that 1st half will go down as probably the worst 45 minutes of football I've ever seen. Both sides were pathetic and we set out for a 0-0 with the team we played, I don't mean to piss on your fire but you beat a pub team on Saturday and deep down I think you know it.:sorted:
I think that pees me off even more, had we been in any sort of form or with a capable manager, you were there for us to avenge that day at GP where you rubbed our noses in it.

It was by no means a good performance form Oldham. One weakness this season has been an ability to win games when not playing well. They've now achieved that 3 times in 4 games (but lost the other one 6-0). My first post this weekend stated Oldham were poor and Brentford poorer. But 9 points out of 12 when not playing well is cause for a little optimism alongside the realism of being a lower league "nothing" team.

If you can get at our full backs, you have a chance. If you hoof it up the middle it's unlikely you'll beat us.

im slowing giving up mate, im not spending money on going for now, il be a glory hunter and 80% sure il be at exeter but untill AS gone or the football gets better im not going!

Even more annoying, when was the last time we had a striker go through the middle of the centre backs and slot home?
The 36 gave us hell, simply by running at us and hanging on the shoulder. His touch was poor, but his work rate bought him that extra yard or second every time and he chased the ball down like a fat bird chasing a cake.

The back four were so flat and paceless: Leon put himself about a bit, Woodman tried to supply to the front, Wright was just poor and OJT didn't look match fit/sharp.
OJT was caught out for the first goal, missed the target with a totally free header from 12 yards and attempted the world's slowest step over in the Oldham box with the ball at his feet in the final minute.
The second goal looked like we were doing a 'Phoenix from the flames' for Giggs goal against Arsenal.

I think Simpson would be a good signing and is showing as much, but doubt he'll come back to warm the bench.

AS need's to get over that away win at Franchise last year, we can't/shouldn't set out to defend for 96 mins and hope we sneak something on the break.

I've honestly not seen a team look so uninterested since the Butcher days. For an hour Lee was our only player trying to get things going with some quick throws/kicks out.

It's hardly a surprise when you've got a central midfielder playing as a centre-back! Our tempo at the weekend and for the last few games has been appalling - even on the rare occasion that we do string a few passes together we go nowhere with it, because it's so slow that any attacking options get closed down or read by the opposition.

It was a decent goal mate, but not that good!

Can't believe the BBC web highlights edited out the celebration though!

The game at Oldham put me very much in mind of the first game of the season v Carlisle.......huff and puff....run a lot....but no structure or pattern to our play....ok the first game you give the team some slack.....but not much seems to have changed... it was the same format as before.....I could hardly believe that we would bee so poor.....although having watched the JPT game v Exeter I can see why people are so pissed off....watching it every week....only hope we can bounce back v Yeovil and Daggers.....YOU REDS......A supporter of 62 years....
