Paul Evans

Paul Evans has been slated again on the GPG for his Cardiff peformances - you remember the games, the ones where the ten men around were all super heroes - yeah right !

Paul Evans should be remembered as one of the best captains this Club has ever seen imho. The Play-Off Final was similar to the recent Sheff Weds loss, the team had performed miracles to get us to the play-off's and if that useless **** MacGammon hadn't of missed from 1 yard at Laughtus Road we would have achieved our dream of playing in what is now the Championship. After the Reading game, the body language of ALL the players said it all, they were running on empty.

But for some strange reason, some of you blame Paul Evans solely for Cardiff - why ?

Paul Evans

What a scorcher Vs Burnley  Plus his cousin used to drive me up to Manchester as she went to the same Uni, therefore he is A OK in my book :sorted:

Paul Evans

I think you got a point, he should be remembered for the championship season and the brilliant goals he scored during his time. I just think because he was our captain and a good player people expected more of him than maybe others and he was poor on both occasions (i dont meant a bit poor i mean awful he seemed to be running so slow he was going backwards at times) But generally he was a good skipper and his goals from midfield ratio is one we could have done with this season just gone thats for sure.

Paul Evans

Couldnt agree more with Bee H. Evo was a cracking player and also a leader, and thats what we could do a bit with at the moment.

He also bigged himself up saying how great and Welsh he was and how playing at the Millennium would spur him to new heights etc..

He also acted like a t*sser at the end of the match IMHO.

Apart from that he's alright. Wish him all the best/no hard feelings etc but I don't think any words that have been uttered in his direction on here are unfounded.

Is this intended irony? If so, very good. If not, even better. lol

I remember a peach against swansea penultimate game of season i think, where he swiviled on a ball direct from someones throw in flew straight in the top corner. Magic.

Paul Evans

A favourite of mine while at GP.

A great player on his day but unfortunately "hid" when it mattered in the big games.
That's not to say that others didn't too.

Is this a duplicate thread?

yep, one of my favourite ever goals - i was actually watching the championship video last night (what?! ) and the goals against Chester and Plymouth were a bit special too.

one of my favourite players until he left with a few games to go of the 2002 season :fishing:

and i subsequently saw him indulging in a bit of blatant cheating while trying to keep Forest up - but hey, i better watch out criticising Bee H's mates

I'll listen to arguments from other people and consider them but I'm sorry, I just can't see why Sir Evo gets the stick he does

Pretty much the whole bloody team had their heads up their ars*s at Cardiff. As a side issue, I would love to know what went wrong there. We never even got out of the box. Not the point of this thread I know, but it was an odd display, nonetheless.

yes yes... i don't think it is excessive, he's just become a figurehead of sorts for the collective failure of 2002. anyone who forgets what he did for this club and doesn't remember him fondly is a tw*t tho :sorted:

Evans was one of my favourite all time bee's. Has to be the best set piece taker this club has ever seen. Since he left we've never looked dangerous from corners or free kicks.

i think i started to lose my love :love2: when he missed 113 free-kick opportunities in THAT reading game

For the sake of an arguement (do you want the five minutes or the full half hour??!!), I reckon that we simply got beaten by a better side this year against Wednesday, whereas we had the beating of Stoke, but we for some reason just didnt get off the coach. I was the end of a tough season for them as well, but they were really up for it, and we choked.

Paul Evans

Pual Evans Was class if we got a free kick on the edge of the box i was almost certain that it was in .the only player i have ever seen live score from the half way line .he could also take a good penalty

Paul Evans

He was a good player on his day but a great player i'm not so sure.

Surely Herman and Ivar can be classed as better players?

For me Evo scored good goals but had too many games where he didnt turn up.

Maybe the team of that year made Evo look good whereas if we were playing poor then evo played poor.

Not slating him tho.

Paul Evans

I had a pop at Evans on that thread and I stand by what I said, although perhaps my view is based on the last month of the season rather than the play-off final itself.

When Evans 'wanted it' he was a fantastic player, a great leader and for the first half of 2001/2 he was simply awesome but IMHO when he knew he was off the effort dropped off.

Evans was a player who got by at times on sheer will and determination when he wasn't playing well I don't think he had that towards the end.

We had players who put their careers on the line: Dobson (never been the same), Burgess (haven't seen the best of him since), Rowlands (played having injections for the last month or so). We had players like Sidwell who was just on loan and others like Owusu and Ivar who must have known they were off too but I never felt their effort dropped.

They wanted to get us up, I felt with Evans he knew he was going up a level and didn't really care if Brentford went with him.

It's just my opinion and those who know Mr Evans better might feel differently.

Paul Evans

**** all wrong with Paul Evans it was that **** Noades...... Coppell wanted out allegedly but he stayed on till the end of the season just for the players

Paul Evans

Anyone who went to Cardiff really thinking we were going to win with 9,000 mice against 32,000 maniacs is having a laugh.

To be honest Stoke were the one side I really didnt want to face. We lost to them away, and scraped a 1-0 victory at GP when Deon missed numerous 1-on-1's and they played with 10 men for an hour!

Back on topic, always thought Evo was quality. Id love to see someone like him now, just to put their foot on the ball and spray the ball around a bit as opposed to hoofing it forwards. Good captain as well IMO

Paul Evans

I wonder if 14 goals from central midfield would have made any difference this season. :fishing:

Paul Evans

:D :imwith:

I knew we would beat Huddersfield but I also knew we would lose to either Stoke or Cardiff. Unfortunately, despite being a gambling man, I didn't put any wedge on it cos I was so desparate for us to go up.

This is Paul Evans we're talking about, right?

He had an excellent shot, scored some fantastic goals and took decent free kicks but he was no Glenn Hoddle. IMO he spent too much time trying to make killer 40 yard cross field passes that usually succeeded in giving the ball away or else just moving the ball on aimlessly. I don't recall him as any kind of play maker.

I often got frustrated that Gavin Mahon was shoved around the place to accommodate Evans because I thought Mahon was the real deal.

Can see what you mean, but take my point in perspective. No disrepect, but compared to Eddie Hutch and others we have had to endure Evo was like a Hoddle.
I think your being far too harsh on him, without him in the team we weren't the same, but its all about opinions!

Not suggesting it would be fun, what with them having the whole city behind them and all that, but IMO Cardiff were not as good a team as Stoke.

If you're talking about passing then comapred to Eddie Hutch, Jay Smith was like Hoddle. Evans was a good midfielder who I'd have in the team tomorrow ahead of anyone we've currently got but not necessarily because he was a good playmaker but for his other qualities.

Give me the choice between Evans and Mahon though and it wouldn't be a contest.

Stoke were the best team we played that season by miles. I'd have rather we played Cardiff in Cardiff too.

Yeah.....right  The only person seemingly up their own ars* was the silver fox whom was still at the club, was he not? We didn't perform on the day and Stoke deserved their result. I can't help thinking that the off field situation was what beat us in the end! I was in tears that day as the realisation hit that we would lose near enough the whole of our team!

Paul Evans

If the hugely talented Coppell team had played with as much heart and backbone as the not quite so talented Allen team we'd have been promoted in March 02 and still be in the Championship today.

I think the problem for the Coppell team at the end of that season was too few players. After Mahon's departure I reckon we played the same 11 in virtually every game, and some of them (Burgess and Rowlands in particular) were obviously being patched up and sent out when they would have been rested if we had had any decent reserves available. Sooner or later that will catch up with you and it hit us in Cardiff

bury away, rowlands couldn't cope with 2 games in 3 days, and that was our only loss of the run-in - ultimately cost us promotion. f*cking n**des :mad1:

Thanks Mark for posting that picture, I was pretty sure that at one point I saw Evo briefly break down into tears whilst Stoke celebrated but have never seen any one round here mention it.

As to his alleged lack of effort in the last few games, I imagine it is often difficult to prevent a lack of motivation coming through when you know you are effectively going to be sacked after the last game of the season.
