Player contracts

Is this info right.... ?

Date of expiry

May 2008 - Peters

June 2008 - Charles, Smith

July 2008 - Tillen, Heywood, Carder-Andrews

May 2009 - Simon Brown, Mackie, Thorpe, Connell, Ide, Poole, Montague, Dark

The club has an option on the second year, in May 2008 for Montague and Dark

June 2009 - Karleigh, Mousinho

July 2009 - Masters, Pead

Sept 2009 - O'Connor

If this info is correct, we need to think about Charles, Heywood, Smith, Montague and Dark before the summer rolls along !

Player contracts

I think all contracts end in June rather than July.

I thought that Connell and perhaps Poole were only on a 1 year deal and that Charles rather than Osborne had a 2 year contract - but might well be wrong

Doesn't the woman type thing take the male's name? Surely your new surname will be Osbourne with a u!

The really interesting one is Heywood, whose contract expires this summer.

When he was signed up, there was much wailing & gnashing of teeth on the good old GPG that we were paying way over the odds for a journeyman centre back.
Now, 18 months on, he is the rock of our defence, & maybe just as importantly in terms of his value to the club, a mentor for our young defenders learning their way in the game.

So, bearing in mind that any contract extension offer must (if I am correct) exceed what he is already on, should the club

1) Look to tie him up with a contract extension at improved terms as soon as possible before he talks openly to other clubs.
If we want to push for promotion next season, he will be a vital part of the spine of our side, and his partnership with Osborne is just now bearing fruit. Worth every penny.

2) Wait until his contract is close to expiring, the clubs situation will be a bit clearer in the summer. After all, there is still a small chance we might yet get promoted. Maybe we can beat off the competition & persuade Matt to re-sign a similar contract to the current one. Perhaps we can ship John Mackie out in the summer to help fund a new deal for Matt. A higher risk strategy in terms of losing the player, but wisest to play a waiting game, could save a good few quid.

3) Thank him for his contribution & let him go in the summer, we can spend his considerable wages more wisely elsewhere. In John Mackie, we do have experienced cover for the "number 5" position & with JM on a 2 year deal & unlikely to leave, we simply can't afford to keep both in the long term

There's nothing that says that a new contract must be on the same or more: before Bosman, that was the condition to avoid someone claiming a free transfer, but now you offer them what you like, and they take it or leave it.

If the sort of figures bandied around last season are right, I don't think we can even afford to match Heywood's current salary for another season (despite his improved form). If his form continues, we could offer him a contract on perhaps 80% of the current deal - if he takes it, great, if not, thanks for your efforts. Same would apply if Kev's contract were coming to an end (which it isn't): he's a good flexible asset, but he's not worth that much at this level. Exact figures we might offer someone obviously depend on (a) our budget (b) the going rate for an experienced League 2 player in their position

The directors' dilemma.

Mackie is no longer good enough for Div 2; Heywood was not good enough for Div 1 (although it seems both can claim fitness as excuses). Either or both could get an :owusu: at any time.

Prevarication would seem to be the prudent course at this stage. The unknowns outweigh the possible loss of Heywood, who I should imagine would be the most expensive central defender in Div 2 next season. I'm also confident we could replace him adequately on the kind of money he'd expect.

Hmm, doesn't give us an awful lot of room to manouevre in the summer does it? I'd imagine we'd like to keep Smith and Heywood's the only one in the 2008 list who we could make any substantial savings on (and he's been our best player this year!!)

Player contracts

Heywood is playing at his level, that's why his performance has improved, offer a contract but on half what he's earning now i would have thought.

Smith i'd definately offer another year to.

Tillen, Peters can go. Carder-Andrews needs to go out on loan for this season and maybe next as he's still very young. Dark ? Montague, on his performances so far, i'd take up his option.

Player contracts

I would not be offering any new contracts at this time. If we did somehow manage to go up then how many players would honestly be any good in the higher division...........probably one or two! If we do not go up then they can accept another contract or leave, there are plenty more fish in the sea and there are no Jay tabbs or Ivar Ingamarssons on a 1 year contract in this squad who are going to increase in value!

Player contracts

Dickson and Smith could do a job at a higher level IMO out of the early possible leavers.

To back up your point, look at Walsall as they shed their skin after promotion and got rid of players who played in loads of games in their promotion side. They are on a 15 game unbeaten run so you can't argue with Money's logic. This division is sh*t and the ex Fulham scum knew that and so do we now.

Don't offer any extended contracts at the moment. Heywood is doing well but we can't afford him so we either let him go or make him a more realistic offer which he may or may not accept.

The jury is still out on Smith and I don't think we need to make a decision for several months on him.

I can't see anyone else getting a new contract from those whose current deals expire this year apart from Montague.

Hopefully we can do a deal with perhaps 2 of them to leave early.

As for the 2009 bunch, our hands are pretty much tied but I would be very surprised if we see much or anything more of Mackie.

Isn't dickson on loan?

Just a thought about Mackie...
Hasn't he been injured throughout Scott being at the helm? There is always the possibility that Scott is eager to get him back in the side, or fighting for his place again?
Whilst the fans have accepted he is effectively gone for good, we can't be sure the management agree! I have seen nothing to convince me, but would Scott be able to get Mackie performing, just as he has with the rest of the team?

I'm actually quite worried that I sound like Mackie backer...!

I'm sure Scott wouldn't reject him out of hand - and, with a squad our size, he couldn't afford to.

Based on his form to date, I don't want him back in the team, but I doubt if he has played his last game for us

You might well be right Ubee. After all AS is getting the best out of everyone else so why not Mackie? Time will tell of course but AS is obviously doing something right which TB couldn't or wouldn't.

If AS wants to continue his good run then he MUST LEAVE MACKIE OUT. AS must know Mackie's lack of capability by now, and although he came in on his recommendation he surely won't want to put him back in the team. Let's face it, the reason Mackie gets a yellow card in nearly every game he plays, is because he is incapable of defending very well and the only way he can stop opposing players getting past him is to foul them.

I haven't seen enough of Dark and Carder-Andrews to make a decision but it should be worth giving them another year.
Montague, Smith and Heywood should definatly have something sorted out quickly.

We can't carry passengers. Every professional should be ready for the first team otherwise what is the point in having them. If you're good enough, you're old enough.

People are assuming Mackie is injured, has this been confirmed anywhere? :fishing:

montague is awsum, what are you on about? his strong, ha a good touch, and is good in the air, and he can hold the ball up. his better than thorpe. just give the boy a chance, his only young, and has just come into the 1st team.

we are the mugs playing thorpe and mackie £1500 a week to do **** all.

montague is prob worth another contract to be fair, but not the other 2.

Montague - Take up option
Dark - Take up option

Can't see Mackie getting in ahead of Osborne or Heywood but problem will come with suspensions or injury to either of these, we are left with either Charles, Mackie, Thorpe or possibly KOC as cover, which sounds a bit scary....everybody else is too short!!

Can see why AS has got Partridge around

Player contracts

I think I'd rather use the money on contracts for the best of the bunch of the next crop of youngsters as these two don't seem very likely to break through.

I think the time to decide is in 6 months, which is a long time in terms of their development. I've got no idea how good these 2 are, however they are both only 18 years old. Give them some time out on loan and see how they get on. Both will be cheap, so nothing to lose really is there. :sorted:

i cannot understand all this criticism of charles. He is physically very good, excellent at making runs down the left flank, okay he sometimes has lapses in concentration but i'd say hes definitly capably of doing a job. If poole/ dickson gets injured, hes right back in the team.

Defending can be coached, physical attributes can't be. Both Charles and Osborne have a lot of things players in league 1\2 don't have, with the right coaching and experience they could be very good, both of them. People forget how young they are and what kind of team they've been introduced to.

Thanks for that

2009 - Ages away

2008 ones - At the moment I reserve judgment on Montague / Dark

Smith - Again not sure but might be well be worthy of another contract (have not seen enough of him)

Heywood - A difficult one. Wherever he ends up he will be paid less. If Mackie was to go I might offer him a contract about 40% lower. I could imagine a time when we thought we miss him, but not that mobile, few injuries. I think we could get better value for money, but could get worse.
