Problems on matchday (split thread)

I was at the match on saturday in the away end and it all looked quite dramatic with the police and horses/stewards on the pitch at the end. This seemed a bit ott at the time but I couldn't see that bottles had been thrown from where we were and I couldn't judge the mood at the other end either. Perhaps this was sparked off by Flinders slinging the muppets off the pitch but there was no sign that the stewards were going to do anything at all to stop them.
The stewards we had watching us mostly looked like they needed a good meal in them. I wouldn't fancy their chances of sorting any trouble out if any of our lot kicked off during the game.

The time has come to start saving our club from these mindless cretins, all of us have mobile phones capable of taking photographs, why don’t we start a rouges gallery and pass on all info to the club for them to then take action, or would that be “infringing their civil liberties”.

This is a good idea in principle, but the last bit about "infringing their civil liberties" is the first and last refuge of the scum in our country and is exactly why the decent majority are always left frustrated and feeling ineffective.

I still enjoyed the day out at your ground despite the bit of needle and dubious football, and I intend to come back next season as we were given a warm welcome by all those we met.

Problems on matchday (split thread)

A total of around 24 pages about this incident and I STILL haven't seen exactly what the stewards are or are not allowed to do.

After being venomously boll0cked by a long standing fan for taking no action, a steward told me that he was not allowed to do anything.

I'm unsure if he meant not allowed to manhandle the pitch invaders or go onto the pitch himself. It seemed strange as we've all seen stewards chasing pitch invaders in the past.

So what exactly are they allowed to do?

Because in this particular case they did absolutely feck all. And even when the keeper caught the little scroats, they made no effort to take them from him. If they had, perhaps he wouldn't have felt the need to throw them....?

As for the suggested "heavy handed approach" at the start of next season, I don't agree. All of us who travel to away games have been treated like sh!t at certain grounds and it's not right that the decent fans should get tarred with the same brush as the morons.

I agree with Les. My ten year old regularly attends with me nowadays and I don't find the chavscum element a problem really. It's a fantastic lesson in life for my lad - "here is how NOT to behave".

However, I'm guessing that if you'd never been to GP before and chose to stand slap bang in the middle of the Ealing Road, you might make the (wrong) decision to not come back again. I say wrong because anyone with half a brain would realise that there are other parts of the ground that are, shall we say, a bit more sedate.

I suppose if you've followed Brentford for as long as me and my "lot" then you know who to avoid at away games too, and we always avoid the "knobheads" if possible.:)

If drastically increasing the levels of security in the Ealing Road stand will stop the knobheads attending and attract new support then go for it. However, I don't think it'll make a blind bit of difference.

I'm certainly happy to see that it's not just me who has noticed the chavscum/ edl types that seem to have pitched up in recent seasons.

Football is about passion and passion brings alot of the atmosphere. Apparently I need to be pissed out of my skull and full of rage for the oppo fans or that makes me a prawn sandwich eating Daily Mail reader according to some. I disagree. It's quite possible to have a good time and get behind the team without being a total dick.

I think you are right on all accounts I would extend that to pubs to avoid before or after the game we all know where to go and not to if you want a row.

Problems on matchday (split thread)

I just read the adjacent thread 'Who do the Bees hate then' with some despair. Why all the venomous hatred? I remember 1967 and will never forgive QPR till the day I die, and always smile when they lose, but I don't 'hate'. Sure, there are teams I want to see lose - I was well chuffed when Man City failed to get 4th spot despite their millions, and I shared in the pleasure when Gillingham got relegated, but I don't hate them. I would much rather share banter with opposition supporters. I was the lone Bee in a pub after the Oldham game (my last game, I can't go very often) and shared a thoroughly enjoyable pint with some of their supporters, arranging to go back next season. A happy evening.

But then I read this thread and realised that I can hate after all. But not opposition supporters, I hate Brentford 'supporters' who spoil it all for others, who bring our club into disrepute, and who are a downright embarrassment to us all. They will never put me off because I have red and white blood flowing through my veins, I am stuck with it for life, but how many less determined supporters are put off by their actions, how much revenue do we lose? Were I younger, fitter, and blessed with a lot more courage (not much danger there then), then I would gladly punch some of these urchins in the face and tell them to go away and not come back.

So to abee, I share all your frustration, and would support any draconian measure you care to try to get rid of this horrible minority. Sadly, in today's society, it may be extremely hard to achieve.

Problems on matchday (split thread)

I think most (probably all) clubs have an element of retard followers, that are territorial and confrontational by nature, given any sort of stimulus. The sort of scum that say 'what you lookin' at?' even if you're not looking at them in the pub.

It's been around for as long as I've been watching football, which is over 30 years.

I have to confess I also felt on a bit of a downer after Saturday's match. The 3 little urchins on the pitch really irritated me, because I know the consequences and magnitude of fine the club might face, the bottle throwing, youths charging towards New Road looking for trouble after the match. Didn't see the beer throwing, but that is very depressing stuff....don't know why one or two one here are making any excuses for it.

What can you do? - The guys running the club, the team and vast majority of supporters are really decent folk from all walks of life....try to ignore the few retards and accept they exist at every club. Don't let them drive away the majority. Hopefully the club will take note of the general sentiment on this thread and the Flinders one, and get heavy on the scum that are spoiling it for others.

Problems on matchday (split thread)

You're right but we have acquired a following of horrible little chavs over the past couple of seasons Nick. I sit in the relative slumber of D Block so don't see any of it at home games but I've had to put up with some shocking little sods away from home.

At Norwich, a bloke sat in front of me and my dad with his two kids (14 & 15ish). The dad was off his face, and the three of them spent the entire game standing up gesturing to the home fans. I'd be amazed if they watched more than 15 minutes of the entire game. When I eventually got fed up of seeing nothing but their backs, I asked if they might like to sit down so the rest of us could watch the game. This was met with a volley of abuse from all three of them and the threat to "smash my f***ing face in"...

We all know what happened at Millwall and I was two rows in front of the little sh*t who threw the sign. Again, if he and his little group of chavs saw as much of the game as they did the Millwall fans I'd be astonished.

And again at Swindon. The top row of our fans were an absolute disgrace. Ten or so spent the entire game aiming the most disgusting abuse they could at the adjacent Swindon fans and barely spent a minute watching the game.

I love the atmosphere at football, especially the away games and many of the youngsters make that atmosphere what it is but there is an increasing element of nasty little oiks who have absolutely no interest in the football side of things and are there simply to abuse the away fans and look for a row after the games. If they were proper Bees fans, then they'd take notice when other Bees fans asked them to behave or tone it down rather than simply turning their abuse and violent threats on them instead.

thank you for not putting us all under the same blanket!

Problems on matchday (split thread)

Have to say after reading this and the other thread regarding the Hartlepool goalies attack on the kids who came on the pitch I find it bizzare.
1 We have the official site saying thank you to the fans for keeping off the pitch
2. We have the FD of the club coming on here to explain the problems this and other incidents have not only upset him but the expected financial fallout from the FA re fines. If the club believe this is a major problem why don't we hear from our Chairman Dyke or the new CEO rather than letting a fan who gives his time up to sort out the clubs finances to vent the clubs frustrations.Whilst I don't go along with Abees views on the latest incidents l will never question his loyalty and his great work he does for our club (wish he had been FD back in the Piggot days)
3 Found it hard to believe that according to Abee the new CEO and the exCEO escorted the Hartlepool Goalie to the team coach after the game.Talk about getting a dog and barking yourself, surely someone must have known there would be a problem, dispite having god knows how many police and stewards we leave members of the staff to escort the person at the centre of the problems. The CEO would have been more effective if he had chosen to step in to stripes and adressed the apalling issue of trying to get drink at the bar.Now that is an issue.
4The club desperately needs an effective CEO to front the club at all levels
something we have not had since Keith Loring not everyones favourite at the time but he was good commercially and knew exactly what was going on with the fans by mixing with them and sorting out any fans who stepped over the line as many on here will remember.

Finally people on here who think the reason for falling attendances is down to these "new" hooligans they have god their heads and arses firmly in the sand.

Problems on matchday (split thread)

I went to a lot of away games last season and the Carlisle and Hartlepool games were among them. Carlisle was a wonderful start to the season and i took a friend who fancied a day out. There was a chap amongst our 511 that day who was spitting pure venom and hatred (to quote someone above) the whole game and five minutes in we moved a few rows away to escape the earache and aggravation. This buffoon was so drunk he could barely stand. He didnt ruin my day but we moved because of him. At Hartlepool which was a friday night game there were eight to ten idiots sat directly behind the goal giving Flinders absolute dogs abuse re his wife etc etc. Classy stuff it was. They were getting very disapproving looks from all around but it didnt stop them. We would hardly have had floating fans traveling 265 miles to an away game so these people are amongst us. Fortunately they are a tiny minority but are present all the same.As Abee said earlier the days of shaking hands with opposition supporters and wishing them luck seem to be long gone. I feel that these scumbags follow every club. Its not just us.

Hartlepool away.... piss up on a Friday night staying over....
Its football just a bit of a abuse to the goalkeeper.

I would only question it if they were being racist or throwing stuff on the pitch.
Every match anywhere the goalie gets stick...

I agree Nick but maybe it does come down to what people 'think' may happen. I'm guessing that's why my workmate asked me if GP was a safe place to take his son. If he'd seen what was happening on Saturady he may have come to the conclusion that it wasn't a good place to be with a 7 year old. I for one wouldnt condemn him for that.

Yeah its rough as **** in New Road.......

fact is that the people who threw bottles will cost the club money in fines. realistically it's only a small group of about 20-30 people and i'm fairly certain the police know who most of them are.

Problems on matchday (split thread)

There is a serious cancer developing in football in general and sadly now at Brentford which is the only club I care about and we now have an element who have latched onto the club and who I despise to my core. Their conduct is nothing to do with football but they use football as the excuse to roam the streets offering anyone out who looks at them sideways.

Hasn’t this cancer been spreading through football for years and BFC has managed to avoid/control it. Or is it because you are more involved in club and it is impacting you more.

It blows my mind trying to understand why anyone would want to throw a bottle/coin onto the pitch. Sadly these people are becoming more prevalent in our society. Things like Facebook and Youtube make it more attractive to kids to record themselves breaking the law and gaining ‘Notoriety’ via hits.

The passion and dedication you have is obvious and I applaud you for it, but you can only effect what is in your control. You cannot stop someone throwing a bottle or a coin. These are deeper problems than you can't possibly hope to impact. However could the club do more? Is there enough deterrent? Could the stewarding be better? All questions I am sure the club are asking themselves.

Just like in the past these things run in phases and the best you can hope to do is protect the club as best as you possibly can during this phase. You mustn’t beat yourself up about it, if you do you will send yourself to an earlier one.

Take comfort in the fact that the large majority of fans are on the club side.

I hate QPR, hate their supporters, ground and colours. It was bred in me and in 1967 it took on its life in me. So what does that make me. Any QPR supporter near me if we happen to ever play them again gets the verbal treatment. So what does that make me. I pray one day they go out of business and a sewerage plant is built on Loftus Road. So what do you recommend for me. There is no room for piousness when it comes to QPR

Just out of interest could you not add an extra bit to season tickets/ticket terms and conditions that says, in legelese obviously, that 'If you are involved in something within the ground that leads to the club being fined you will be liable for at least a portion of that fine' (Proof required obviously)

No didn't think the club frork out £60,000 a year for CEO to escort visiting players, when the the stadium is full of stewards and police, some on horses.but hey ho its Brentford. If you didn't know there is a major problem getting a drink in stripes which needs addressing before next season as many on here have mentioned, this is going to cause a loss of revenue next season for the club.

Not to single out you in particular, but this general sentiment really gets on my tits. People act as if before Labour and the Human Rights Act there was no violence at football; the whole bullshit about "declining society" is a load of old tosh, in my opinion. Consider the amount of racist abuse in football in the 70s and 80s. Consider the riots, strikes and hooliganism of the 70s and 80s. This isn't a problem with the "lefty wets"; if anything it's because of Thatcherism and the rise of individualism and "there's no such thing as society", and the pursuit of money and wealth as the driving factor and reward in society. And it isn't a decline that's started recently; it's barely a decline at all. It's a huge improvement over the state football was in 30 years ago.

That's not saying there is no problem now, there clearly is. But it needs to be kept in perspective and dealt with rationally without over the top rhetoric about "declining society". It's a minority element that has always existed...

Look, as said many times before. The violence at GP in the 70's and 80's was

Nothing happens in the paddock apart from the odd burger hitting Stimson which AS thoroughly appreciated. Football is tribal and diverse, isnt diversity the in pc word, get used to it or take up bowls. The gossip amongst bowls players makes the paddock like a chapel on a friday afternoon

Feck me, I'm a bowls player now.
What happens in the paddock is that people offer out the other fans and vice versa all bloody game. No banter and nothing subtle, it's got boring.

I'm prime suspect for that burger hitting him but it certainly wasn't me, I'm all up for a bit of tribal banter and always have been but offering people out isn't clever or brave.

Sorry mate, but you are wrong. Where you are is great no probs, but where I used to sit is now the domain of the throw slitting **** I am generalising a bit, but it is not the usual "friendly" banter with the away fans, players etc etc. It can be very tedious foul abuse, with mobile phone gestures and outside etc. It is not of course every game, but still enough for me not to want my son to endure it.

There are a few of us who are quite bored with it and am moving next season. I moved already to the ER last year, but we are now sitting up at the far end of the paddock now.

As for STRIPES, it is absolutely shocking and something/anything needs to be done to increase the bar size and reduce waiting time to less than 15mins.

they do know who they are because they see them every week and keep a track of them (e.g. police van outside the lord nelson plus walk throughs when they were in there recently). it's just that they have to physically catch them committing an offence. etc

It makes me really sad to read posts like this, John, and I hope that you might reconsider and find a quieter part of the ground to relocate to.

I don't agree with NorthamptonBee that the club can do nothing about it. It might take some time and make for some ugly scenes as the culprits are identified and pulled out, but if the will was really there it could be done.

some of the spotty little oiks from the bye or whatever they call themselves. you know the ones who always 'just manage' to get picked up by the police and escorted everywhere so they dont have to get their stone island/burberry dirty doing any real fighting but can tell the rest of the morons on their council estate that they 'went to xxxxx and we took liberties on their manor' etc etc. its not like any other firms are going to find them in a pub as well hidden as the nelson though you would have thought they might the way the boys went 'patrolling' outside every few minutes, just in case lol  rofl

Spot on mate.

Er, I think you can identify the time when football violence really kicked off as the mid-sixties when Mrs T had very little influence. I am struggling to remember the utopian society which apparently existed before she came to power. It must have been great.

"Violence has always been associated with football since the origination of the game and its ancestors, dating back to 225 BC"

I think anyone under 25 shouldn't be allowed in unless the're with their Mum or Dad, who must be wearing a long raincoat and a flat cap and carry a wooden rattle....and the only swearwords allowed are damm and blast.....then everyone will be happy :)

A perishing good post and no mistake!
