Ref Watch

Hope this is in the right place, thought after today it would be good to have an ongoing thread to comment of referee's performances. Some refs no matter how hard you try to forget, you just cant (Andy Durso :mad1: ) but with this thread we can monitor their performances (good and bad of course) over time.

Andy Woolmer - Went Looking for fouls that hadnt happened and in the process missed those that had occured, or just got them wrong. Sending off was right as i have just seen on SSN but he even went about that the wrong way. A good ref is a one that is in the background but this little fella tried to steal the show unfortunately. :banghead:

Ref Watch

Good idea for a thread. We can also see who is coming our way and decide if they are rubbish or not before hand.

For example this Saturday we have

Referee: Carl Boyeson of Kingston-upon-Hull
Assistants: Ross Joyce of Middlesbrough & Robert Atkin of Scunthorpe
4th official: Michael Denton of Todmorden

Bizarrely Boyeson reffed the exact same fixture last season and sent off Joe Skarz of Bury. Gave us a pen, but should have given us an earlier one.
Joyce is a ref in the Blue Sq Premier and last lined one of our games at Rochdale in 2010-11
Atkin is a ref at Blue Sq North level and as far as I know may not have lined one of our games before.

About 15 years ago, Andy Woolmer used to own my local corner shop in Kettering. He used to do this strange little trick with coins (change) - FACT!

Ref Watch

Excellent idea.

I thought Woolmer was appalling last week.

The sending off was correct and one of the few decisions he got right.

as said earlier, the good ref is the one you don't notice - Woolmer was diametrically opposite to that.

I would go as far as saying he didn't make that decision... the assistant did...

Officials for tonights game...

Referee..... Carl Berry of Cheam
Assistants....Daniel Leach of Witney & Wade Norcott of Harlow
4th Official.... Andrew Laver of Portsmouth

Berry is a 2nd year FL referee. Local-ish appointment. Reffed 2 of our games in his first season. The defeat at Stevenage, which he was dreadful, and the pre Christmas win over Hartlepool, which was also a dodgy performance, but that time in our favour. It seems he is being earmarked for the top after 4th officialing a PL match on Saturday.

Norcott is a regular at GP, either running the line or 4th official . He ran the line at our last home game against Wednesday. Leach only previous Bees experience was in the 2-1 home win over Chesterfield last season.

On a side note, I believe the linesman for Bury was changed from Ross Joyce to Mark Astley (from Manchester!!).

Also a number of referees have now gone after last season including Colin Webster the villain at Huddersfield. Andy Penn, Andy Hall. Grant Hegley, he we used to see a lot of, and of course Danny McDermid who reffed his last game for the Bees. A number of linos have been promoted to FL referees, including Steve Bratt, who used to be a ref before being demoted. Lots of comings and goings with linos. Overall there is 9 more linos to chose from then last season.

Ref Watch

Lets see if he gets the game away on time. Games always seem to kick off three or four minutes late nowadays.

Ref Watch

Thought Carl Boyeson on Saturday was alright, he gave decisions both teams diagreed with but he was an improvement from the plonker at Walsall. Seemed a fair shout for a Bury penalty at the time but having watched the FL show i think Dean got the ball (although i dont want to see anymore last ditch lunges like that again because it will only be a matter of time before a pen is given, especially away at the "big" clubs)

I don't remember Berry being dreadful at Stevenage and he gave us 2 pens!

Yeah but it wasn't good refereeing to give those  I'm not moaning and hope he continues his trend of awarding us penalties (Hartlepool too), but I've seen better decision making. The one he gave us against Hartlepool was also quite soft.

and the problem is?

If he gives somewhat questionable decisions for us in those games, it's equally likely he'll give questionable decisions against us too.

As I said I'm not moaning at us getting those penalties, just that they weren't great decisions (one was right though).

Thats exactly what I feel about Berry. Gives dodgy decisions, so far in our favour, but they wont always be. He's also a bit handy dishing out cards as well, not as bad as Malone or Deadman though, but then thats fairly impossible

Ref Watch

He stood & stared as a Yeovil player deliberately kicked the ball away to waste time right in front of him.
He watched Douglas chop one of the Yeovil players in half in the dying seconds & barely even mentioned it to him.
Crap ref, but at least he gave both teams something to grumble about...

Ref Watch

The first decision he gave our way was on 31 minutes. I did look at the clock at that point.

You often get a sarcastic cheer if a ref is being a little one sided, but this cheer was a lot louder than the usual given how long it had been before we got anything.

His decisions did not change the outcome of the game though, more of a side note.

Ref Watch

Poor ref, but gave us a penalty so didn't matter (ffs)

Ref Watch

Can I also say that in the last three games this ref has managed our games, we've had 4 penalties, and missed them all.

Ref Watch

Just being pedandic I'm pretty sure the lino gave the penalty as he flagged immediately with his flag across hios chest. Berry then blew up for it.

Ref Watch

Well Mr Berry lived up to his reputation!

Onto Saturday and the officials will be

Referee...Graham Scott of Abingdon
Linos....John Busby of Berinsfield (Oxon) and Alan Young of Cambridge
4th official...Wes Linden of Northwood

Scott's only Bees game last season was the 2-0 defeat at Charlton, and before that the 1-0 defeat at Orient in September 2010. Dont know much about him, which can only be a good thing.

Busby is a Conference South ref, who last lined for us at home to Colchester last September. Alan Young is a Conference North ref and is making his debut at Football League level on Saturday. Lets hope he doesnt get overawed. In fact its unusual for a rookie to be thrown straight in as a lino, especially at League 1 level. Odd appointment, you would expect at least a turn at 4th official first.

Also a Middlesex official as 4th official. I know that usually means holding up the board, and telling managers to get back in their box, but also means if the ref is injured its the 4th official thats takes over.

Ref Watch

Mr Berry was poor on Tuesday, very fussy, far too busy and made many a decision about him. Hoping for better from Mr Scott.

Ref Watch

Graham Scott was superb today I thought. The early advantages he gave set the tone for an enjoyable flowing game of football. He made one poor decision against Logan for an alleged foul on Pogba infront of the paddock but apart from that he got it spot on. Hope to see him back at GP soon.

One of the best ref performances at GP for some time. No fussy reffing, played advantage well and seemed on top of everything. Well done ref - though to be fair, I thought Crewe's style meant for a clean and attractive match without too much to argue about.

Ref Watch

A very good ref today, who used common sense and dialogue instead of automatic yellow cards when players made silly comment or clumsy challenges. The game was improved by the officiatiing team, who generally kept play moving well.
Can we have them again please!

Agreed. Reffed it excellently but there weren't a great many difficult decisions to make. That said, that's not dried some other referees from having sh*t awful games in the past.

Ref Watch

I remember this guy reffed our home win against Norwich and he was excellent that night too. Another good game today. If he can do it to this standard why cant the rest?

Ref Watch

I thought he was going to call the game off when he ran over and had a word with the linesmen/forth official

Ref Watch

Top quality ref who actually knew that the fans wanted to see a game of football, not a whistle blowing ref with an ego. He blew up on Sam for a foul, Sam was arguing with the ref . Others would have booked Sam , but the ref just took him to one side and told him to calm down, same happened with Logan. I long to see refs of this standard ay GP instead of the crap we normally get. So thanks Graham Scott for making it a better game of football.

Ref Watch

Actually set out his stall with an absolutely firm word with Logan about positioning his throw-in in the first couple of minutes but then seemed to say to him, with a look and a smile, "stick to the rules and we'll get along just fine". That set the tone and, apart from a bit of diving that he fell for, was unnoticed for the rest of the game; the perfect ref.

Ref Watch

Think it might have been difficulties with miking up and couldn't communicate with lino due to thunder and lightening breaking up radio signal. However, we weren't as bad as Wycombe - lightening strike on the visitor's stand - match abandoned - but pitch thoroughly waterlogged as well from FLS highlights on the Beeb. Ours held up well although a few splashes just before ht.

Ref Watch

It appears credit all round went to Mr Scott whom we would like to see back at GP again. Interestingly, he is not a name ive heard for possible promotion to the PL. Also im guessing rookie lino Mr Young did fine too in his FL debut.

On to this saturday at Walsall

Referee....Mark Haywood of Wakefield
Linos....Adam Matthews of Stroud & Anthony Tankard of Sheffield
4th official....Neil Radford of Worcester

Haywood reffed the 1-1 draw at Notts County last season where he bizarrely sent off Uwe for getting in the way of a throw in! I imagine Uwe's least favourite referee! Before that he took charge of the home leg of the Southern Final in the JPT against Exeter. Mark Haywood is also not to be confused with another FL ref called Mark Heywood!
Matthews is another rookie linesman, who made his FL debut on Saturday at Oxford. This could be Tankard's first game lining a Bees match (although im not 100% certain)

I double checked and the 4th official Neil Radford of Worcester is not the former Worcestershire and England fast bowler!

I fear the worst. This bloke was very poor at Notts County last season and even managed to get in the way of our passing. Lets hope he can read the game better on Saturday.

Ref Watch

Like TW1Bee pointed out, yes we have got Attwell this weekend. Yikes. Granted since he has been demoted ive not heard much about him, which can only be a good thing.

Linos...Constantine Hatzidakis of Bromley and Justin Amey of Bournemouth.
4th official ....Paul Harris of Maidstone

Hatzidakis is a rookie lino, whos only previous appointment was the League 2 game between Barnet & York a couple of weeks back. He currently refs in the Isthmian League. As far as I can see this is also a Bees debut for Amey, He refs in the Blue Sq Prem. Coincidentally, Harris is also a rookie and whos only previous appointment was the abandoned game at Wycombe the other week, due to lightning.

I thought he was OK on Saturday. Gave us a couple of undeserved corners in the 2nd half, but I don't remember any major problems and no cards IIRC

Ref Watch

Seems our "mate" Carl Berry from the Yeovil game had a stinker again on Saturday at Pompey sending two off. Both managers have gone on record to say he lost the plot. Oldham appealed the decision I believe.

not really, it might mean he's due one of his notorious errors

Ref Watch

It always makes me angry when I read of referees like Attwell and others who have "mares" refereeing a premiership game , - are then disciplined and "demoted" to the lower leagues. The implication behind this is "well it doesn't matter if he makes errors in those matches", he is being punished.
So are we! Just like premiership managers, lower league managers can lose their jobs and fans see their teams robbed of promotions by "lousy" referees - if they keep making mistakes they should be asked /told to quit the job.
We seem to have had more than our fair share of rubbish officiating at our matches why should we (along with other lower league clubs) have to tolerate incompetence. Once upon a time referees used to officiate in all 4 leagues - which I am sure was beneficial for both them and the clubs - some good/some average and some poor. Now, it is deemed that only the elite premiership league has to have the best.
Their greed and well being is seen as vital - the rest of us are of no consequence.
So much for the legacy of the Premiership.
