Rewatching the Play-off Final

Just watched the whole Sky programme from yesterday after being lucky enough to be at Wembley for the game.
The montage of previous playoffs defeats to start with set the tone and made me realise again ( if i needed reminding) just how lucky we are.

Its easy to say now watching on sunday morning in hindsight, but we really did control the game from start to finish. The only wobble was the start of second half what in a might have been moment for Swansea , but beyond that we never looked panicked or nervous.

Being at the game of course was different ! Even at 2- 0 , the old ' its Brentford innit' thoughts come to the fore but it was totally professional , the game was seen out perfectly.

Watching the Pontus interview, seeing Thomas dragged off by Henrik to get the bumps, giving another great interview and even apologising for swearing.
The eyes got misty again this morning

Who knows what next season will hold, but for now ' We're Brentford FC, we're Premier League'

Trust me, watching at home was exactly the same. My son said after we had gone two-up: 'We're two-up dad, be happy!!' The embedded experience of so many past disappointments made it impossible to be so until about the 94th minute!!!

Same for me. I kept thinking of the two stoppage time goals that saw a 2-0 lead disappear at Loftus Road in 2017. Interesting bench that day by the way - included Watkins, Maupay, Mepham and Sawyers.

Haven't been on for a while but just a quick congratulations from me. Obviously gutted as a Swans fan but I mentioned to one of my former work colleagues we'd either scrape a scrappy game or you'd control it.

I watched the whole post-match the next morning as Sky were re-running the whole thing (I tuned in for the 85th minute onwards there), and have watched Quest twice. So 4 times in total and one more time on Youtube.

I also noticed just how much we are ahead of them in terms of fitness, transfer fees paid, current valuation, etc. We really shouldn't have been as worried about them as we were and they have over achieved massively. They won't be back in contention next year IMO

My heart rate went from 47 to 110 for the entire game, that what happens when I run. Even the whole of half time it was up there.

I said to my son before the game we will cruise to a 2.0 win because we are that much better than cheating Swansea but only if we turn up.

We bossed it from the first minute and I really believed we had it but as always you just hope we don’t do something daft.

Several time I told people what I am trying to imagine and hope for is BM bursting through and being brought down, pen and red card would be perfect, a second goal follows soon after.

Second half Swansea lose their sh*t and get a red card and we cruise home being able to enjoy it.

Well, I should have put money on most of it however I was bricking it until 90 mins, that was my check point when I thought at 2.0 it is over. We got there but the 6 mins of injury time still took 25 mins and we played it out brilliantly.

I can genuinely say I hated every second of the game until it finished, I watched the highlights and the goals at least 25 times since and other than one Ayew header which he couldn’t get near enough to there was nothing from them and we did pretty much cruise it. But you did not feel anything like that during the game, all you could think was don't be the first team to throw away a 2.0 lead versus 10 men but in the end we were spot on professional about it.

I have never known a clock to go so slow.

Watching at home with my son, he asked me as the second half kicked off when I’d relax and just enjoy it. I said possibly if we got a third goal, he agreed that would be game over but was inclined to 60 minutes. He asked again when Fulton got sent off and I said not until 85 mins and then only if Swansea hadn’t scored. I couldn’t even be fully optimistic then as with time added on there’d still be time to throw it away even though we looked comfortable. It was really only with a couple of minutes of added time left (around the time Cooper congratulated Frank) I accepted we were finally going to do it. It is only on watching the replays I realised how comfortable the team was (though a different matter if Ayew hadn’t headed wide) and that we’d had two great chances second half to kill the game. He did say he understood I’d had more experiences of disappointments!

I think Ivan’s magnificent unsuccessful effort was a wonderful epitaph to our season where so many goal attempts (and games) seemed to just elude us. Those 4 defeats and 6 draws that simply didn’t matter any more, were all encapsulated in that wonderful goal attempt. It was the icing on the cake that in the end we didn’t need because of that brilliant breakaway goal of a few minutes before.

Don’t you think that Thomas’s greatest managerial coup this year has been how he kept faith in Bryan. Bryan’s 11 assists and brilliant resurgence at the end of the season have meant we kept both the B and the M from the BMW !

Was watching the highlights again this morning at 7am before I went to work .. will never get tired of watching Emiliano’s goal .. I think it’s got to be up there with my all time favourite goals along with Jota v Fulham ?

Have watched it so many times and I still have tears in my eyes at the final whistle .....did anyone notice that when the players and Thomas do that huddle with the chant that literally just before that Thomas congratulates Goode I think then Janelt thinks that Thomas is coming to him and then the huddle starts....it looked to me with Janelt like that situation when u think that someone on the opposite side of the road is waving at u but in actual fact it’s for someone else u quickly carry on with what u were doing!

Re clock and also pessimism

When the game kicked off I almost immediately glanced up at the clock. By the time it got to 07:00 I realised I had already looked at least four times. We weren't even winning then!

Who on earth are these lunatics that weren't worried? It would have been the most sickeningly predictable twist of fate for Swansea to nab one in the last few mins and then get their customary late penalty with the last kick of the game...I know we were the better team, that's why it would have been so painful!

And on not enjoying it.... the journalist Jonathan Wilson told the story of going to the 1973 FA Cup Final with his dad. His dad spent the first half an hour dreading losing, and once Sunderland were winning, spent the remainder of the game praying for the final whistle. I now feel like the match itself can only be actually be enjoyed in hindsight, on days like this.

I will forever be grateful that the players did not behave remotely like I was pacing up and down in the stands, they looked calm and confident. One of my champagne moments wasn't a goal or even a chance, but the crowd doing a "YOU REEEEEDS" early second half whilst the ball was just calmly stroked between the back three. No danger here (in hindsight )

Anyway I watched the full 90 again last nice tuning in again now for the celebrations
