An excellent comparison. Glenn Poole got a distinctly raw deal from Scott after scoring 15 goals in a season, many of them from midfield. It was a mistake that cost Scott dearly in the end, in my view. Saunders has again shown what he's capable of - tireless, imaginative playmaking, an eye for dead-ball opportunities, ice-cool under penalty pressure - and I hope UR doesn't make the same mistake that Scott made. I don't believe he will. It's noticeable that he's keeping Forrester on the bench, and it may be that for all his undoubted talent, 'arry still has it all to prove.

According to my stats expert Sam is sitting at number 11 for appearances this season, would suggest that stat alone would ensure him a new contract

Please re-title this thread to SUPER Sam Saunders. The guy has skill and quality. He is puffing out his chest to take responsibility when we need it most. Couldn't make today, listened to the PNE commentary. There was only one player they were worried about - Sam. Not many have got the bottle to take pressure pens. 2 in a week for Sam.

Glad he's in our team. Wouldn't want to play against him. Players like him can be the difference when things get tight - a goal threat from midfield.

Wow. Sam has really played his way into recognition since Crawley. Top player and it's people like him who can make the difference between now and the season finale :sorted:

Great first half and altough understandably tired second half he gave his all and won us the game.

I started this thread in November 2009 and Saunders on his day can be our best player, a goal scoring midfielder with a Beckham like talent for free kicks.He works his socks off and now he is in form must start against Sheffield United next Saturday which iis liive on Sky Sports at midday. As far as I am concerned he ain't missing anymore so I'll leave up to you lot if you need to close the thread.

Fair play to Sam he hasn't had a great season and has come in for a fair amount of stick on here at times including from me but the 2 pens this week could end up being the difference between top 2 and also rans . A few of the younger players have been a bit in and out recently so it is good to see Sam stepping up to the plate.

A player with the bottle to take the firm decisions and face the consequences if they go wrong. The last two games he has rose to the challenge!!!!

Great composure for the penalty and whilst waiting to take it had a great big smile on his face

He is not a winger and is not blessed with pace, what he does have is a good footballing brain, impressive ball control, excellent free kicks and a real desire to succeed. Some of our younger players could do worse than study his work ethic and the fact that when dropped he works bloody hard to get back into the team and doesn't sulk or hide

Apart from the penalty 2 things stand out today, one was him tackling in the LB position and the other when he looked up on the touch line by the dug outs and fired a cross to the other wing where Shay was in space. Worked his little socks off today

Another pressure penalty which was a cracker again.

Also produced a good save from their keeper from a free kick.

He battled well today, getting stuck in etc he wants it and just wants to play football.

Nothing against Dallas but from what i've seen of Dallas (which isn't much Shrewsbury (A), Scunny (H) and today) he has made a far bigger impact as a sub (although I read he was good at Carlisle) and the pace he injects into the side, could really be useful against tired legs.

What would you know, you've only stuck up for Saunders, when quite a few others said his career at Brentford was finished.....

If Hoolihan at Norwich can play in the Prem, I don't think SS is to small, lightweight and slow for the championship. His experience is crucial right now. He seems to have a steely determination to make things happen now he's got his chance in the first 11. UR, I imagine loves this in a player.

Its not the size of the man in the fight, it the size of the fight in the man.

Can I just temper this Super Sammy hysteria as deep into the second half he decided to play silly buggers in our own box and lost it much like the goal he gifted away to Walsall.
He was rescued by Captain Caveman, he had a great game no argument but he isn't someone who I could imagine holding a place down in a Championship side.

I know I have said it before but you cannot put a price on experience. Its not only about scoring penalties, its about playing keep ball, winding up your marker etc etc when the situation demands. Its all in the head......

Alan Bennett was experienced.

Let's not pretend Sammy has been a nailed on starter for the best part of the last two seasons. The cynic in me is saying he's doing what alot of players do when it comes to contract talk times- playing for a contract. Nothing wrong with that of course and better that than looking dejected but really can you see him holding his own in the Championship.

Writing all this makes me feel bad. He's clearly a top lad and playing well. He deserves respect but then so do alot of other players the GPG faithful have lost patience with over the years.

Sam is a player that can win you a match even if you are playing badly with his excellent touch of the ball. This type of player although infurating at times is the type of player who gets people past the turnstiles.

I don't reckon that's Sam at all in regard to teh contract stuff, Sam has these runs where he is the "Golden One", stick him on the wing with Harry and Adam firing and he'll get subbed after 60 minutes without raising a leg, start him with a roaming role after a performance or two on the wing that shows that he's in good form and you have Sam Saunders. He needs to be the main man and have the weight of our good thoughts stowed upon him IMO, I like him a lot but this won't last, he will be Sammy Splinters again soon but I love the ride when this happens.

Spot on. Sam always gives his all, I think, but it only comes together in spells. He doesn't have the pace or the real quality to cover up when it's not going for him. But when it is, he can win a match for you. Fair play to him - a good player to have in the squad for me, but not one you want to rely on to be the spark to get you up from this division.

Don't mean that nastily - I've got nothing but respect for the bloke.

He's probably the only current midfielder that the Diamond formation suits and it's when he was at his best for us last season. Sam is the man at the moment, top boy and if we get up will probably be considered a legend but I wouldnt offer him a contract if we make it up.

As last weekend showed, the diamond formation is a valid option and is likely to remain so even if we make it into the Championship. It would be plain daft to jettison the player who's best fitted to making it work.

It would even dafter to offer an opinion and recommend which players, formations and tactics UR should deploy based on what you read on the match reports thread.

The Diamond has been used less than half a dozen times in the league, Sammy has had 4 or 5 decent games this season, I hope he has another 7 where he's a worldbeater but he has to do a lot more to earn a new improved contract if we get up.

Reckon he wil get a contract as his intelligence when playing is important with a young team. He is not going to be a regular starter however as an alternative from te to time or as an option from the bench he offers a lot.

Has played more games than some this season 11th most appearances which suggests he is firmly in the managers plans

Should we get promoted there would still be a role for a player with a footballing brain plus ability and the extra space that he might find would benefit his game
