Scouting

Is this still done at Brentford? There's an article in the Independent about DeMerit, the Watford defender, who was at Southall three years ago. He fixed up a trial with Shrewsbury before Watford got him. Is Southall a bus ride too far for our chaps?

Scouting

Why would anyone take a bus to Southall ?

Scouting

On a serious note, I have met 2 "football scouts" on away days this year, spying for other clubs.
They have both commented on how poorly set up we were at set pieces, and both used the phrase "we looked like we hadnt done our homework"

one scout was in the LR era, one in the SF era.

I would like to put forward Northampton Bee as our "homework guy".
Each week he could be sent to watch our future opposition...this carries the added bonus that the 6 people who normally sit behind him at games, could get an unobstructed view...

Scouting

We have a scout alright fixes up deals for family relatives pretty well i heard.

Not that our scouting system seems up to much at the moment with all the duds we have employed this season, but it is a tad boring when some people expect us to disciver and sign EVERY single player that turns professional anywhere in London.

It just seems that everytime a player is picked up from somewhere the club are criticised for not having been there first. Not all ex chelsea players are any good, tillen and keenan, and we should be scouting nationally just just at poor non league clubs like southall. We can not see them all and sign them all and who is to say that when we have looked they have not impressed on that occasion. How long do spend folowing a player around waiting for the 1 good game?

Thanks for that. I would suggest that Brentford should be on close terms with neighbouring clubs, especially non-league. Or is that too sensible?

Scouting

What people get confused with is scouts who are looking for new talent and those that are reveiwing future opposition for a club.

A club scout watching for talent would and certainly should have contacts from schoolboy level to non league and then in the professional game. Those contacts then come to you with players resumes' and recommendations. You may ask them to watch them a few more times and pay their expenses, but what everyone must remember is they are freelance and will quite often be recommending players to more than one club and seek payment of some sort too. If reports continue on the same players are still ok, a club would then ask the players down for trial and then from there it will then be down to the manager & coach to review and decide.
No fully employed club scout at a club can get to see every game and they are reliant heavily on theses contacts, imho Griffin may well be too old school and have a dwindling influence in good contacts. He was once highly regarded by many grass root scouts but that as probably diminished considerably ove rthe years as younger brigade join the scouting scene.

He fixed up a trial with Shrewsbury before Watford got him.

he was signed from northwood playing in the southern premier after playing watford in a pre season friendly two years ago,how do you know the shrewsbury connection?he might of wrote to all league clubs asking for a trial

Its in the article. Pity he didn't write to Brentford. Or did he?

We have had stacks of players over the years from local clubs particularly hampton. Look at powell, went on to play premiership and he is just one example of a player we have brought in. We can not sign them all though. If you go and see them play and someone has a stinker then how many times are we supposed to spend watching them when there are hundreds of other players out there?

There is a massive scouting network and these people recommend players to dozens of chief scouts who then go and watch them. you can not see everybody and sign all the good ones, the world is not that simple.

Where were Southall playing three years ago? What is the point of getting a bus to Southall?

No point for Brentford. You hardly needed a scout to know that Alan Devonshire was a promising player at Southall as was Gordon Hill a few years before or Cyrille Regis at Hayes. Perhaps our scout watched them play and decided they weren't up to it.

If you have a good player no matter what level then always make apoint of trying to contact the club. The receptionist at our company told me her boy played for an under 15 team who have swept all before them this season winning the treble-league championship, league cup and county cup.He was at Reading but not overly happy with the set up.

I got in contact with the club and a member of the youth set up contacted me and asked me to get him down to the school of excellence for a 6 week trial. He has passed and has left Reading to sign schoolboy forms at Brentford. He will be playing under 16's this season and has a very good chance of a YTS when he leaves school.

This is a different scanario to seeing a non league player as the club did'nt spend any money on a 14 year old but it would'nt stop me approaching the club if a good non league player stood out.

Does anyone know of the person to contact regarding getting someone to watch local matches (Hellenic stuff, not Sunday morning stuff - though he plays this too).

A right winger, who is very technical, can play across middle too and on left, and can score goals too.

I have had the pleasure of refereeing him a couple of times in adult matches, and saw him shine in Junior football too, turning down Reading 5 years ago as his dad (his coach too) said it was wrong for him to join a club at his age at that time (he was 13 then).

The player I am wanting to put forward is Sam Whiting. He currently plays for Wokingham and Emmbrook. He is in his 2nd term for them, with the following as his write up on their site:

A skillful, lightning fast and tenacious midfield player who can create as well as score goals Sam has great ability and is sure to be a key asset this season. Another star performer from the Allied Counties side who also turned in many match-winning performances for last season’s developing 1st team.

So far for the 1st team he has scored 4 goals.

Probably best to pass it on to the club, I wouldn't put his name on a public forum if you think he's that good........oh, you have.

Along with Chelsea and Brentford, Watford scouts are always sniffing round these parts and have training for youngsters in Hayes or Ealing or somewhere similar.

I'll look out for him in our local rag tomorrow.May try to get to watch him play if it doesnt clash with our games.

Our system does make you wonder, talking to someone at GP Sat who also goes to Harrow Borough and he was raving about this lad and he claims over the last couple of weeks at least 10 clubs have been to see him (allegedly)
