There was a £7m fraud that went on … maybe they would not reveal where the monies went to so that contributed to the harsher sentence? (I’m not saying it’s right)
Depriving sky of money they can ill afford to lose, oh my heart bleeds.

White collar crime. Personally I think the sentence lengths are bonkers. When you see what people get for drug driving and all sorts of other offences. Ridiculous as far as I am concerned.

Exactly. Seven million quid, a £5.99 table from Argos and too tight to pay for a cleaner.

Makes you wonder who the real criminals are.
Here in NZ I was paying $25 per month last season with Spark Sport for the EPL and a few other sports.

Sky took it over this season and it immediately went up to $40 pm and they raised it again to $45 mid season.

To be fair, it’s not too extravagant in GBP terms but to almost double the price within 6 months in the current financial climate, at least Dick Turpin etc, etc …

One comment on this. When Brentford played United away this season there was not a single UK TV channel covering this game ‘live’and one could be subscribed to every paid channel and still not be able to watch it. Whereas the rest of the world could watch it on various international channels. So one asks the question why would you not stream?

Not disagreeing any of this but if there is no legal means of watching a game then obviously there will be a market for it.

Revelling in the Premier League prize money that keeps our club afloat while paying money to a dodgy IPTV sub. This feels a touch ironic

We've heard this a million times not every game has to be on TV and not every game has to have a TV audience ?

If it weren’t so poorly priced I think I speak for a lot of us when I say I’d have no problems going the legal route.

As things stand, it’s not so reasonable to be paying £30 odd each per month to three different rights holders and still ending up missing more then half of the games because of the way it’s set up. Especially during times like these.

Whereas you can pay infinitely less for a dodgy stick and get everything you could possibly need. The Premier League set up this grey market thanks to their own incompetence, they have no one to blame but themselves.

People are using TV less and less, especially younger people. Streaming is the way to go now and I’m surprised they haven’t started their own subscription based platform yet.

The pandemic definitely distorted people’s expectations around how much football should be televised. While it is a bit annoying when games aren’t shown, I just shrug and move on

No matter how reasonable the legal channels made Premier league coverage, IPTV would still be cheaper and offer infinitely more value. Same goes for Gillette razor blades in the shops vs a man down the pub. There’s always scope for a discount when the goods are stolen. It’s down to the individual to make a moral choice about whether they are comfortable with that or not.

I don’t intend for that to be condescending but for all intents and purposes there’s a fair degree of equivalence there

Funding any criminal activity ends up funding more criminal activity, it’s never isolated when it’s done on an industrial scale.

I’d guess the trial included information on what their entry-level activity was and the investigation into where the money went will uncover further criminal activity.

6 years in nick for that. A few weeks ago they let a child rapist walk free after a guilty conviction.

Some place this.

My view is this taking the United Brentford game as an example (for the record I was at the game) but it was a 8pm kick off - an individual could have a subscription for BT sport, Amazon, sky, Disney, MUFC tv or whatever it is called but despite paying for all this can’t watch the game anywhere legally in the UK whereas Michael from Nairobi can. There is something wrong here IMO. I can understand the point for Saturday 3pm kick off to a degree but not for an evening game. Solve this issue first and then you will go halfway solving the issue of illegal streams. Although not sure why anyone would pay for this when there are lots of free streams around (as I have been reliably informed) ?

I think the problem here is that with the internet, many have come to expect it as a 'right' that they should be able to access pretty much anything that is televised and many of these people want it for nothing.

I have never linked to any free streams because they are illegal. I never will.

I think one of your earlier posts made a better point - there is demand there to view these games, where people can't get a ticket, but no legal way to watch the game. Whereas no-one has a 'right' to watch this on the telly/streamed, I think within 5-10 years that is the way it will go. If people are prepared to pay, someone will offer that service. But people that offer to run those subscription services are doing it to make lots of money - never forget that.

I don’t disagree, but when you decide to make the experience so tiresome to navigate, viewers are always going to gravitate to what they deem is a better option.

Of course there will always be a few people who do this regardless of how expensive it is, but nobody can honestly say with a straight face that it’s a good deal.

It’s down to the individual to make a moral choice about whether they are comfortable with that or not.
You know the saying, ‘no ethical consumption under capitalism.’ No doubt is it illegal, but the likes of Sky TV make it an easy choice. They’ve been on a mission to ruin football for the last 30 years. If pirating makes me a bastard then I’m fine with going to hell with them.

I very much doubt that viewers subscribed to this and other illegal streaming services because they wanted to watch, say Bournemouth V Sheffield United and it wasn't live on Sky. They did it to save money.

Sky are monopolising and getting abnormal profits. More competition would lead to lower and dare I say more affordable prices. However, Sky clearly realise that their is inelastic demand for streamed sport and therefore use the price high low volume model which reaps more overall revenue than low price high volume. Given this, control over supply, collusion with the other suppliers and industry created barriers to entry those customers who can't pay naturally migrate to the grey market.
Yes we benefit from the high payments from Sky BUT if it were half that for every team would it make a difference?

I'd say it's both. I know plenty of League 2 and League 1 fans who use similar services because it's quite literally the only way to watch their teams. For £5 a month or so, can you blame them? I know I won't.

There was a chap doing a Brentford firestick on Brentford FC Loyal on Facey. About £90 a year or summit? Don't know if he's still at it the old rascal? Have to admit, after feedback from a couple of folks I know I was tempted myself and probably only didn't because I was told it couldn't be used on a PC or laptop which is where I would have wanted it. But he appeared to have an awful lot of subscribers which goes to show the lengths (and slight bending of the law) people will go to to watch their teams.

With most Prem games sold out and thousands unable to get in or attend for other reasons, live attendance suffering seems a bit of a ridiculous reason for a blackout. I guess it's the clubs insisting on it? I don't think live showings would effect attendances. I think Sky are missing a trick here. People on the whole aren't trying to get something for nothing, they're trying to watch their team. Who here, if they were unable to attend, wouldn't pay a tenner or twenty quid for a legitimate live stream? Because I know I would. It's not about the money money money, we just wanna watch Yoane dance, forget about the price tag.

Wise up clubs and Sky. It's you driving it underground. Read up on prohibition a hundred years ago. That went well did't it? Little red buttons. Pay per view. There's a fortune in it.

Let's not forget that we in the UK pay way more for sports subscription tv than certainly any other European country, and I think even the US. Rip off Britain at it's finest. To then be told you can't watch Brentford v Man City on tv anywhere in the UK barring match of the day at 11pm is a joke when people all around the world are watching it at a fraction of the cost and live.

Until that changes IPTV will continue to thrive and there will be plenty of others queuing up to deliver the service now that these guys can't.

I believe the 3pm blackout as dated as it appears, is designed to help protect lower league clubs. I can sort of understand the logic. Young kids coming up either going to support Stockport in person at 3pm on a saturday or having a chance to watch United on telly could become a real problem

Have you got any facts as I know in Italy they pay as much as we do and have the same old things with games being on sky Italia, dazn, sky sports etc

I don't think our subscription costs are that bad as had a look on sky and atm it's £45 a month for sky sports and BT and I've not even looked at virgin and others and that's for everything minus the Amazon ones but if you really want that you can get that on a one off month trial or pay a one off £7.99 and for that you don't get all the buffering sh*t

I personally don't have sky as don't need football 24/7 and get BT via my internet package

Cos you may be worried of getting ripped off or your details ending up with bad guys - I'm already being ripped off by Virgin and Sky to the tune of £100+ per month. Who are the bad guys here?

Don't know if you'd call it facts but was listening to Kevin Hatchard (a Sky journalist) on Talksport this morning and he was discussing it. Seemed pretty adamant that the UK was more expensive than the rest of Europe. I know that you can ignore a lot of what they say on Talksport but I like Kevin Hatchard as he comes across very knowledgeable about European football.

IPTV I've seen generally doesn't buffer as bad as the online streams do. That aside, I've seen it offered for £45 for the year in some circles (no, I haven't taken the offer), ranging up to £90. All those subscriptions mentioned are £540 for the whole year, which is more expensive than some actual season tickets, with less actual coverage than the dodgy stick will get you. Especially during a cost of living crisis, saving 500 quid a year is going to appeal to most.

I am not putting this out here as conclusive proof, but it may be of some interest. Counterfeit: Don't buy into organized crime

IP theft of various types is a multi-billion dollar activity. I am more likely to need persuading that organised crime would not see it as a relatively lucrative, lower risk, addition to their business portfolios.

I definitely wouldn't pay £20 to watch it on tv.
But what if you were in a distant land Far, far away from civilisation. Say, Isle of Wight. Or Bracknell. Somewhere like that. And you had no chance of getting to a game to get your footy fix whatsoever. Even less chance now Scummers have been relegated. If the options were £20 or just don't watch Brentford, would you rather give up this fine form of entertainment? God things get so desperate here sometimes I'd pay £20 to watch the Teletubbies if they dressed them in red and white and gave them a beach ball.
