Just watched the Championship and saw Attwell caused a stir again, sending a player off for a second booking for an aeriel challenge that looked very similar to the red Elder got....I think he probably got this one right, but it makes Elder's red even more frustrating - inconsistency or a sign he is finally learning?

It was a worse challenge in that the Darlington player clearly elbowed him from behind and got a yellow for the offence.
Elder's hand came came into contact with the players face with him not looking that way and got a red.

i watched it and thought "if that was Attewell, he'd have sent him off".... and lo and behold, Attewell gives him a 2nd yellow...

In years to come Attwell could have [or could have turned out] to be a good ref. Unfortunately, I think he was thrown in the deep end and the damage is done. I agree with what has been written already - his reputation will follow him everywhere and that phantom goal will follow him for the rest of his 'career'.

His rehab is complete ( apparently) and is back doing the Premiership on Wednesday at Wigan v West Ham and then on to a UEFA tournament in the summer
So he says, he is a better ref for his experiences.

If he had sent off Neil then Cattermole wouldn't have launched into his assault on Parker, who shouldn't have been on the pitch anyway.

Cattermole is a loose cannon, worst disciplinary record in the League I believe.

He got a lot wrong, thought both Cole's bookings were harsh and most refs would have given him the benefit for the last offence. It seemed to set the tone for the rest of the match and after giving several unnecessary bookings he then lost control thereafter. Could have sent Neil off though for that challenge, Cattermoles challenge was bad but Parker made a meal of it.

That must just about do it for Mr Attwell for a while. Blame the players if you like but when they are faced with someone who is incompetent and totally lacks any ounce of common sense in favour of their own ego and does not understand the principle of consistency then they will lose it, God knows it happen in most walks of life when frustration gets the better of people. This was typical of a game getting out of hand because of the way it was handled by the ref. Zola should have been a diplomat, you could see he wanted to say things but thought better of it. As Lawrenson said he (Attwell)needs to be given a break from thr limelight or words to that effect.

He lost control again by the looks of it, I don't like the man but I do have some sympathy as his publicity and halo selection have heaped loads of pressure on him. Maybe Cole's 1st challenge was a card but the 2nd!
The players didn't help him but he looks so lost, not a good ref and the FA need to help the guy by taking him out of the limelight and admitting that maybe he was the wrong guy to promote.

I could see why Cole got a second yellow, it was a bit of a risky challenge, but common sense should have prevailed. What did annoy me was that little **** Michael Brown charging in telling Atwell Cole had to go, and to book him, he is a right little coward that Brown.

i didn't like the way that Attwell clearly reacted to the other players' complaints for Cole's 2nd yellow card.... the Neill decision was terrible (the Neill tackle was terrible, why on Earth do footballers tackle like that?) - as the commentator said, referees have been consistently clamping down on that this season, so Attwell is letting his colleagues down by only issuing a yellow here... and that provided the circumstances for Cattermole's challenge - it's rare a challenge is so bad that a commentator just says "ooooooh"

Yep. Everything in that game came from the awful handling of the Cole situation I thought. How to lose control of a game in two easy stages. Also thought it was interesting that he then bottled the Neill sending off - remind anyone of him sending off Elder but miraculously not doing the same to Wood?
Any more games like that and something has to be done... surely?
