So that's another two teams on his list. Who would have thought that Watford, Brentford and QPR fans would think this guy is an absolute tit and should never referee again.

Add Millwall to that list...

Also thought it was interesting that he then bottled the Neill sending off - remind anyone of him sending off Elder but miraculously not doing the same to Wood?

I remember saying this straight after the Notts County game....I would actually have had more respect for Attwell if he had sent Sam Wood off. It was either as bad as Nathan's or arguably worse - by showing a yellow he bottled it, plain and simple.

As long as referees are consistent, I don't think fans mind the odd honest mistake. The frustration is when refs make several bad decisions AND are inconsistent with it. Unfortunately, I can see Attwell being back in League 2 before the end of the season. Let's hope the FA have the sense not to send him to Griffin Park...

They've just been slating him on Talk Sport.

Recommending he gets dropped a few divisions for experience.......

absolutely, Wood was a very very very lucky boy in that incident.

Can't believe that so called experts reckon he will be a better referee if he drops down a few divisions. He is either a capable referee, or he is simply not up to the job. The facts would suggest that he should not be allowed anywhere near the professional game in any form of refereeing capacity.

Most people seem to understand that, except the ones that matter.

I am starting to feel a bit sorry for him now...don't like to see someone so much of a target after all he is just doing his best.

Ian Wright actualy said something sensible tonight, some of the Wigan and West ham players should look at themselves after some pretty pathetic displays of over hamming it to get players sent off ....Parker for one

Stuart Attwell

Parker was an absolute tit, does the law about simulation cover things like his overreaction to the tackle that resulted in a sending off? That's not the kind of honesty I'd expect from a footballer that I thought might fancy grafting a bit after languishing in Chelsea reserves for so long...

Stuart Attwell

hopefull for them, they will lock him out side the ground and he can book the pigeons ,,

hmm, i thought when i read this last night, that's actually Atwell's fault for creating a situation where "hamming" it works... Cascarino explains it better tho, i think:

Referees such as Stuart Attwell, who sent off two players at the JJB Stadium on Wednesday, are a player’s nightmare. He’s the sort of referee who stops footballers from playing their natural game because they are worrying about what the referee might think when they make a tackle. The kind who fails to notice when players are conning him but sends off Carlton Cole because he saw malicious intent in what was an honest attempt to win the ball.

All you can do with an official like that is constantly get in his ear in the hope that he might give you the benefit of the doubt once or twice

Stuart Attwell

"but sends off Carlton Cole because he saw malicious intent in what was an honest attempt to win the ball."

Another footballer that does not know thw laws of the gamr

Stuart Attwell

But there playing the Hammers, whos fans are hardly the forgiving type.

Plus Steve Bruce whines on about descions, when they're marignal, he's going to blow his lid when he sees tw*twell.

Are you some kind of clairevoyant?

Stuart Attwell

Of course he is out of his depth. Evidence has been there for months. Guilty as sin.

Just been named as the 4th official for Bury V Rochdale tomorrow. Could be a lively afternoon out.

Surely there's a limit to what even he can manage to do as 4th official... perhaps he can take that as a challenge, and try to persuade the ref to send off a sub for having an insolent expression on his face

That is a demotion for him deffo. Fourth officials in the FL are not National List fererees more likely to be those who regulary do non-league games. Interestingly the ref for that game is Alan Wiley. Clearly the authorities have said to Attwell, "look here son it's not working is it, you're not getting any better ? Go and learn something from an experienced ref doing a tough, important, top of the table local derby. Oh and by the way don't f***k up the number board - they're expensive pieces of equipment"

The Football Weekly podcast yesterday had a discussion about Prattwell and mentioned the NE incident as further evidence of his total incompetence.

Do you really think Cole deserved to go though? If Charlie or Rhodes had been sent off for those two challenges we'd have been livid - and rightly.

What about it is was Bircham or Rowlands?

Then I'm sure I would've gleefully sung "cheerio" at them - but it doesn't mean I would have thought they got what they deserved. I think that cole decision (and the following decision not to send neill off) sums Attwell up. Awful ref.

And then they will give him Griffin Park on 14/3 !!!

Soon they'll be 92 clubs that'll be saying the same thing about their ground though:(

If he's league 2 4th official is about right.

Stuart Attwell

to be fair to Attwell you could argue that by the letter of the law all of his decisions including Elders red card were right except the goal that never was obviously... he does seem to be a scapegoat at the moment

If you follow that logic (and the world according to Atwell) just about very foul could be a booking.

He understands the letter of the law I grant you and I am sure he is very clever, trouble is he just doesn't understand the game and how it is played.

He is being scapegoated to a degree but it is of his own making sadly. Frankly his position as a professional referee is becoming untenable although I fear he will be "demoted" to Divs 1 and 2 to keep him out of the limelight so I doubt we have seen the last of him.

Stuart Attwell

Despite my comments on here I am actually beginning to feel a bit sorry for him as I'm sure he is a decent, honest bloke who is trying to do his best which clearly isn't good enough. In fact he looks sh*t scared all the time and must be a bag of nerves every time he goes on to the pitch. However it's the authorities who are just as much to blame for allowing the situation to get this far. If there is one thing I can't stand is this "fast tracking" lark. I'm sure most of us have seen it in our professions. Very often those that are fast tracked are crawlers and arse-licking, 'yes' people whose only competence is saying the right things at the right time to the right people. I've seen it in my prfession (teaching) where young people are given big responsibilities often in senior management and just can't handle it. Just like twenty-five year old Mr. Attwell being given Prem. games and could quite possibly Internationals.

law of averages says one out of 88might be right 3 and a bit cards every game ???????

Not sure about decent and honest, in this case. He knows (because he's watched the video replay) that he got the Nathan Elder decision completely wrong, but still stuck with it even when this meant that a young professional's career may have been affected.

Good post,he looked in a state of shock as he was being coached by the 4th official during the Wigan game.

Listening to the Guardian Football podcast and one of the guests referred to his performance at GP.

Surprising these days when anyone knows anything outside the 'Premier league'

Stuart Attwell

You'd think everytime he saw a foul he'd start to give the benefit of the doubt to the offending player though.

Agree with what everyone's saying about the authorities though - if they'd done the right thing and rescinded Elder's red there'd be less criticism of Atwell on this board
