why it isn't possible to just pay the reduced student rate on the turnstile when a valid student card is produced, like for Ealing Road.

A few logistical reasons but fraud is one of them. I don't think booking in advance is too much of a bind if you're getting a discount.

I can't see 'fraud' being a major issue. Having said that I think the current arrangements are fine, Ealing Road is the best stand in any case!

Wherever there is an opportunity for people to take the piss, people will take the piss. In a recent NASA test 74% of all turnstile operators accept a stupid haircut and a scowl as being sufficient appropriate evidence of studentness.

I held an NUS card for 8 years through college and uni and received a discounted ticket through New road turnstiles all the time-this was through the late 1900s early 2000s-was paying 10 pound i believe when admission price for an adult was about 15. It does save a lot of money over time.
