Well just about a week to go............................. Im struggling to high heaven to predict the starting 11

Im not sure what the match day squad allows in terms of numbers on the bench................ But my word that was hard work. Im being harsh on a few and Nico who i rate isnt even in my squad. Who do you drop??? Thats with no Dean, Judge, Lewis etc.

Given the strength in depth we have, it's not very straight forward, so here's my explanation of some of the key positions....

- Canos can start in place of Jota if the worst happens, but otherwise I think Jozefzoon deserves a go from the start more.

- Bjelland starts for me, assuming his role as vice-captain in Dean's forced absence. A bit harsh on Barbet but need leaders on the pitch.

- Given we are in for a battle, I would go for that three in midfield. All on form, all technically gifted but all strong tacklers. Romaine, for his abundance of qualities in other areas doesn't posses this trait.

- Maupay and Watkins - both youngsters who should perhaps be given their full debuts in a less fiery atmosphere, given we have strong competition from more experienced players in their positions.

- Dalsgaard has been more impressive than Colin and the latter has been struggling with injury/subject to transfer speculation. I get the feeling we are going to need height in defence for this fixture also.

I think Egan at right centre bank. Otherwise agree with what it will be rather than your should be.

I have no idea, only Jota, Henry, Bentley and Vibe definite starters with Sergi, Woods and Kamo probables. I do know Dean will need to earn his corn this season keeping everyone happy.

Colin-Egan-Barbet-Henry - it's a conundrum: who will organise the defence? Maybe Mokotjo will be designated in that role?

I would go for what you would like but Egan for Bjelland, but as with you I don't think that is the team that will play

I originally put in Egan but then after his recent performance how can you not give Bjelland a chance so suspect he might? I also don't think he's as much of a leader as Harlee but I think he'll be given another shot with him injured or he'd probably sulk.
We might know better after today though ;)

From the friendlies I think he's been planning on starting Egan and Barbet in defence, and McEachran and Mokotjo in midfield with Woods to come on for Josh early second half. Sawyers to start as the attacking midfielder in front of them with either Nico or Watkins to replace depending on circumstances.

I suspect Dalsgaard will start ahead of Colin as he's figured more in the friendlies and should get the chance to throw down the gauntlet to Colin, particularly against a team which might be quite physical and direct and as yet unsure whether they can play a more cultured game in a higher division.

Bentley, Henry, Jota, Vibe, Canos nailed on (unless Canos' injury makes him a doubt in which case Zoon).

I would agree with all that.

It's a straight shoot out between Bjelland and Barbet for the second CB slot in my mind and not an easy one to call as they both have different qualities. Barbet generally quicker and plays wonderful cross ball diagonals and Bjelland slower but more solid defensively, not quite as good a passer of the ball but reads the game better and gets into better positions. I suspect we may well see these two interchange throughout the season depending on who we're playing. Barbet might be better at home in a more aggressive attack minded side and Bjelland away when we need to be a bit more defensive.

Motojko, Canos (Josezfoon whilst he's injured) and Jota are the main starters I think in midfield. McEachran and Woods will interchange with a battle between Sawyers, Watkins and Yennaris for that advanced No 10, box to box role. It would be Sawyers for me. Vibe up front.

On centre backs fact that dean smith played bjelland first half and Barnet second half indicates Egan will play and one from other two. I actually think will be Bjelland only because Egan will benefit from an experienced head next to him. It certainly looks as though Moko and McEachran will start and can't see Dean Smith playing Woods as well against Sheff Utd. Canos will always play if fit at moment . I don't think Watkins will start ahead of Sawyers for first game of season. So:

Amazingly that means no place for Colin or our new French striker on bench !! The latter one would think would make bench but for who??? Maybe Clarke would miss out as Yennaris can cover right back and Barbet left back.
As long as Woods stays he will force his way back into line up as he is too good not to and the one player the opposition always notice

I don't think Barbet and Bjelland will start in the same side, better to have a right footer (Egan) and a left footer, I would have gone Barbet but I thought Bjelland was very good today.

I love Woodsy but based on pre season Josh M has been at his best with Kamo alongside.
Tough call and shows how far we've come when a top quality player like Ryan isn't a nailed on start.
If 100% honest, if we decided to consolidate and played Woodsy as well and left out Ollie I would understand.
Dean has a nice problem and it will be the strongest bench ever next Saturday?

For me the only tough selections Woods or McE (because McE played well until knackered) and who to partner Bjelland. Egan and Barbet have been the opposite to impressive imo and will be our biggest weakness this season I think.

Edit: sorry forgot Sawyers vs Watkins. Watkins a bit more solid and aerial threat but Sawyers better through balls. Think Watkins needs to back himself a bit more when attacking and he might stake more of a claim to the position but right now it's 50/50 based on performances imo.

It may be a case of not picking the best 11 players but the best formation to get results.
Josh looks superb and is pulling the strings when playing alongside Kamo. Not sure we can play all three although I might be tempted away from home.
If as I believe there is serious interest for our players Woodsy is likely to be one that we'd be able to make a huge profit on.
I hope we find a way of keeping the talented set of midfielders happy and at the club.
