Team v Middlesbrough

Starting this early as after today, might it be the case that of our 4 defensive midfielders, 2 are injured (double Mac) and one will have left? That'll be a problem. George Evans loan up at Walsall today I think - get him in quick.

We're still going for MacCormack then are we?

Let's just hope that Dean Smith knows so little about Middlesbrough that he selects a team based on our own strengths rather than worrying too much about the opposition. Whatever he knew about how to beat Walsall today, he obviously kept to himself!

.......are we resting players again, given we have a TV match coming up on Friday and the players have a day off on Saturday. They might want to go for a game of golf or snooker on Saturday, Cant have them tired out for that.

I agree with this, with Woods right and Canos left.

I think the strongest back 5 picks itself, with Diagouraga sitting just in front. McCormack will then be needed to make sure Leadbitter and Clayton don't get too much of a grip on the midfield, with Woods holding the shape and keeping possession from the right-hand side. Vibe is probably our best option upfront, with Djuricin working his way back to fitness and Hofmann's approach less likely to trouble Ayala and Gibson. The question is then Canos or Swift on the left, and I'd go for Canos as he offers a bit more pace and directness.

That's great, except Diagouraga is widely tipped to be signing for Rangers in the next 48 hours.

Why is everyone putting Toumani in their team when he's more than likely leaving before Tuesday?

Team v Middlesbrough

Our "wide" players need to be at the top of their defensive game on Tuesday so a bit controversial but not sure this is a game for Canos to start. IMO Friend is a rugged, experienced, full back who will wind him up and get him rattled and make some good space without being tracked. However, I don't know what the answer is, think it is too much to expect Gogia to cope with him and not a part of Vibe's game. I think Colin has the pace to go up and down the wing, seems comfortable on the ball, can cross well enough and has an eye for goal. Maybe him in front of Nico. Would like to see Vibe with a bit of a free role behind Djuricin, if it doesn't work then replace him with Judge in that role. Presuming McE and McC wont be fit, probably get shot down with this but;
Button,
Nico, Dean, Tarks (if available), Bidwell
Woods, Toums (if available),
Colin, Vibe, Judge,
Djuricin

Subs: Bonham, O'Connell, Canos, Hoffman, Swift, Gogia, Saunders

But if McEachran is injured and Toums is off then we don't have much choice

Yep, that is the big worry at the moment: if Toumani goes we suddenly look even lighter in the midfield which leave Mac as the only option - and against f**king Boro as well! We have needed at least one more robust midfielder for a while, but we seem to be going in the opposite direction! :banghead:

We have problems. With Toums looking like he wants to go. Macca showing yesterday he is too slow and probably injured. McEachran still not ready. Jota unavailable. KK not up to it. We lack midfielders. Unless a George Evans comes in tomorrow on loan, we're very lightweight. Tarky could sit I suppose, with O'Connell in CB position, but it's a worry.

Team v Middlesbrough

Why are we even thinking of letting Toums go at this stage. We won't get F all a for him, like it or not he is under contract and we have no obvious replacement.
I just don't get it!

If we are letting Toums go before we have secured a better replacement then that is a mistake especially if JM is injured.

Team v Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough will come and sit deep and look to hit us on the counter. Since we've acknowledged Vibe doesn't do well against a deep lying defence we should probably start with the Hoff up top and try Vibe out wide again to run off him. Then swap Hoff for Djuricin & Vibe for Gogia on 65/70.

I can't imagine Toumani will be allowed to leave until a better replacement is bedded in. Yesterday proved that none of the existing holding midfielders can take his place and McCormack just proved hopeless whichever position he was, starting in the attacking midfield and then swapping with McEachran to let their midfielder sail past him to score. So, I think it has to be Diagouraga and Woods as the two holding, it's not time for another experiment putting Nico in there, although his speed may be useful.

AM went off injured yesterday. He was stretching his calf and waving to the bench to be replaced. He won't be involved in Tuesday unless he's a real quick healer.

I would normally agree but what's your take on the observations that when oppo defences sit deep Vibe struggles to find the space he needs?

Team v Middlesbrough

Irrespective of what team he puts out, can they at least play with tempo from the outset and press all over the pitch

Not comfortable yet with Smith's tactical nous and whether he plays just one way without the ability to change if it goes wrong

Accept he is coaching at a higher level however the basic principles remain the same its just supposedly doing it with better players. Think we will have a far better idea of his abilities as a coach by the end of this week

I would like to see this - as long as one of the attacking midfielders supports Hoff at all times when the ball is played up to him. This applies particularly to Vibe, as Canos and Judge will also be required to help protect Colin and Jake.

4-4-1-1 is probably the nearest we will get to a 4-4-2.

Team v Middlesbrough

Could play tarky in the holding role

I think we need Tarky at CB. However if we're thinking outside the box then I think Barbet has the ability to play there.

I've pondered this before. Vibe being the 1 behind Hofmann, I think that is probably his ideal role and I suspect defenders wouldn't quite know how to pick him up as he would be playing deeper than the front man.

The annoying thing is if we were going to tinker with the side like we did yesterday it was actually an opportunity to try that even for 45 minutes.

I agree. DS should have put Djuricin on to support the Hoff rather than replace him.

Maybe we've got someone lined up to replace Toums?
Get £x for Toums and pay £x for a younger, combative midfielder.
just a theory but i'm hoping we get an enforcer type in, we've been crying out for one for ages

Very interesting idea. It requires Canos, Judge and especially Vibe to be ready to make lung-bursting runs beyond the lone striker (Hoff). And for that to happen we'd probably have to play higher up the pitch, which might play a bit into Boro's hands. (Lofted balls over the top from deep positions). But I can't think of a better idea and it might work. I recall Vibe himself claiming that he was capable of playing in the "number 10" role. Well, this might be the right moment to call his bluff.........

Presumably we could decide Toums can't go until Wednesday or even nest Saturday. Or even at all if they don't improve their insulting and derisory offer.
