Watford and Brighton colluded, and some Watford players accepted bribes to throw the matches between the two clubs, both played within a matter of days, so that Brighton could get the vital points to overtake Brentford and become top of the Division and be promoted.
A blatant case of match fixing, which was proven in 1960, but no one was ever prosecuted for it.

Watford’s match-fixing scandal
Apart from that the whole history between us and Loutish Road*,which has exposed some odd events.
*Peter Gilham refused to announce their name when they used to come and play at GP, introducing them as ’the team from down the road’.
Apart from the 1967 infamous attempted takeover, there was also the issue of the strange sale of our two best goalscorers, Towers and Francis, to Loutish Road in 1961.
The link between these two events seems to be Jack Dunnett, the owner/director of the Bees both in 1961 and 1967.
Was he really a secret Loutish Road agent, who obviously stood to financially gain from the 1967 situation, but also from selling our massive strike force in The Terrible Twins.
Dunnett then left us to own Notts County, another team that gave us the controversial Ray Biggar match in 1993, although Dunnett had sold his stake by then.
He was also on the FA Executive at the time of the Hillsborough disaster, with the FA immediate handling of the investigation being recognised as very poor.
