Yes you are right that we need to try something new and the old way of thinking has kept us in this division for a long long time. Uwe's style of play is new and will bring us success but I just don't think the constant tinkering helps. Strikers don't tend to perform if they are in and out of the team. Centre back pairings can't build up an understsnding if they don't play consistantly together. Man U or Chelsea may be able to rotate players but we could never build up a squad with enough quality to achieve this. Any player worth his salts at our level is not going to want to be in and out of the team.

Isn't that the point though? Uwe is trying to build up a squad mentality and he should IMO be given enough time to get his methods embedded. Who said recently that Alex Furguson never plays the same team twice? I don't think we should stay locked in a League 1 mentality on this issue and I don't see why it can't be operated at our level just because no-one else has done it.

Id be sad to see Marcus leave cause hes been a great servant to the club and his attitude is exemplary but I can also understand Uwe's thinking in letting him go. Assuming we'll be able to pick up better centre mid options is a bit of a risk but if were looking to take the club forward with good, passing football then we should look at other options. Ideally id like to see him stay as a squad player but thats not fair on him.

Agreed. I'd like to see him stay on for another year and fight for his place. Not many would have said he would have started as often as he has done this year. We have more skilful players, we have better passers with greater vision but we still need a worker and a grafter and that is what Bean offers. We are not Brazil and will not turn into them overnight. Total football is some way away, first thing is to mount a serious challenge next season for promotion if we don't make it this year (which looks a long shot at the moment). I still see Beano as part of that squad and like every other player he should work hard to be in the starting XI (and I'm sure he would push hard). We are at the moment a mid table Division 1 side with aspirations of promotion, I still see Bean as a part of that squad.

Not a big fan of him myself but he does give his all, and that seems to satisfy a few of the punters ?
It's all well and good saying we need a better class of player , however if Rosler doesn't think Bean's good enough then he needs to take very close look a few more who aren't good enough to get us even close, let alone survive in the Championship. Take a look at the quality of players at Forest, Bristol City and Coventry and they are all still struggling to avoid the drop.........

Bean has done enough this season to deserve another year imo.

Which goes to prove that it's not the quality of the individuals in the squad but the ability of a manager to produce a coherant unit which has the correct blend of solidity and flair to mount a challenge to get us out of this division. That's my point with Bean, gods gift to football he certainly isnt but in the right system and the right circumstance he is very much an intergral part of the team and I don't see that changing to the point where he will become totally superfluous to requirements next season. However should we reach the holy grail of the Championship staying put would be probably see a number of the squad make way including Beanie man.

The Marcus Bean thread

UR showing his intentions by not offering him a new deal. UR probably wants better quality in the middle, someone who can pick out a pass and tackle as well.
Sadly despite Bean giving 110% he doesnt have the quality.

The Marcus Bean thread

I think it's the right move in not renewing his contract, he's not a bad player, and as long as he's contracted at the club he will be used, but if we're aiming higher we have to try and bring in better players. Over the summer I'd imagine we'll bring in 5-6 players, a couple of defenders, a couple of mid-fielders and at least one striker on permanent or season long loan moves. To play the football Uwe wants we need players who suit that system, who can help us play consistently that way. We can't be overly sentimental if we're looking to make a big promotion push next year.

Ideally we can get a mid player who can tackle as well as pass!! However, that does seem to be a rare combination.

:sorted:

If we can bring someone in who can do what Bean does and has a better all round game then it makes sense, but there's no guarantee that player is or will be available, tough decisions
What any fan likes to see is 100% commitment from a player and we always get that from Marcus.

Beano is the sort of ball-winning player that IS needed in this division. It's all very well saying that we want to fill the team with better players for the future but we have to get there first.

In League 1, our progress upwards will require a combination of good old battlers and some injections of quality in the playmaking and striking areas. I would replace Dave before Bean, as Bean is better in a ball-winning role than Dave is in a playmaking role. Not sure where Saunder fits in all this - I like him sometimes but....

Beano is a local lad who would surely want to stay with us for at least one more season to get us into the Championship.

The Marcus Bean thread

All very well saying replace Dave before Bean but Dave is not out of contract whereas Bean is . If I'm being honest I don't even think Bean does the destructive ball winning very effectively either. I'm flummoxed so many want to use valuable budget on such an ineffective player .

Maybe because they and Uwe don't see him as an inffective player. He tackles well and tracks back and wins more than his fair share of 50:50 balls. On a good day he'll then find one of his more creative teammates and get us going on a bad day (of which there haven't been too many lately) he'll give it straight back to the opposition. Anyway must dash train to catch and match to go to.

The Marcus Bean thread

I think it'd be a mistake to let him go, he's good to have around. He's better than KOC going forwards and backwards, when KOC is played in midfield.

The Marcus Bean thread

After watching another 90 minutes I am still uncomfortable with us releasing him. There is definitely a need for one player like him in your squad

The Marcus Bean thread

Must be offered a deal..if he goes who can we realisticlly afford who would be better and want to be here long term

The Marcus Bean thread

would offer him another year as a backup plan in case other targets dont come off. i doubt he's a major drain on resources and does what he does well. if he leaves for another team in this division it will bite us on the botty next season.

The Marcus Bean thread

Had a good game today  worth another season IMO.

The Marcus Bean thread

Would like Beanie Boy to stay. Box to box player, supports the forwards. Works hard. Be a real shame to let him go, in my opinion.

The Marcus Bean thread

Put in a brilliant shift for us today and fair enough Uwe is bringing in talented youth on loans but Marcus is the kind of player that'll prove to be beneficial to those with less experience. Not only with ability but attitude. If Uwe let him go I think he would find it hard to bring in someone of a better calibre with his experience.

The Marcus Bean thread

Cant even believe he is a pro footballer he spends all his time on the floor and we should really be looking at better players if we want to push on next season! He has served us well but its time to find better players IMO!

The Marcus Bean thread

Thought Marcus played well today to be fair. I wouldn't have him as Man of the Match but he played his part in a great team performance. I'm basing my opinion on a new contract on his performances over the last 2 seasons though not the last month !

The Marcus Bean thread

If contracts were awarded for pure effort and committment then Marcus would be one of the first in the queue. It's such a shame that his technical ability doesn't match. I think he'd make a decent squad player but we have to improve the midfield if we hope to progress.

The Marcus Bean thread

I like him but when that great move ended with his shot you knew it wasnt going in.Shame if he goes but you can't be too kind in football.....

I'd blame Douglas for that one (assuming I'm thinking of the same move). He's always too reluctant to shoot, though he sometimes has a decent shot when he uses it

I thought Marcus performed to his max so we had good challenging for the ball which is important but nil creativity. We need to up the quality in midfield. We have now seen what a difference a quality striker makes. Add another centre mid , a wide mid and a left back and if we can get quality in those areas next season then we can go places.

Despite his hard work his final pass was generally poor.

he gave his usual 100% and I thought he had his best game for a while, maybe worth another year ?

Had an excellent game.
I hope he stays

Yes he played well but looking at the bigger picture Uwe can only bring in players if he can shift some out. Unfortunately there are not many whose contracts are ending at the end of the season. What do you do? Uwe is looking to bring in players who can play the way he wants, ie Logan, Bidwell, although Bean gives 110% every game he is lacking in technical ability and Uwe obviously believes he can bring in someone better. If you honestly ask yourself the question is Bean a player who can take us forward to the next level my answer would be no.

Have to agree with this and beleive that Marcus is also fully aware, however he can still influence decisions, continue to battle and Rosler might feel another year is reasonable whilst on the flip side continued decent "Marcus style" performances should make finding a club easier and in the interim will not do us any harm!!i

Can you imagine if we had a Rowlands / Sinton / K Jones player instead of him though? We would probably have scored another couple of goals yesterday. That's why I think we should try to do better.

I agree with this as much as I like Bean all he has is work rate, his shooting and final ball are atrocious at times.

What a player Keith Jones was by the way.

Keith Jones took a long time to establish himself with the GP faithful as I seem to remember. Much of what he did was underated much in the same way as Bean does (No I'm not saying Bean is as good as Jones before people start). Bean is currently worth his place in the side without doubt despite his limitations and I for one would not be dissapointed to see him here competing for a place next season.

The Marcus Bean thread

If he could shoot/cross without hitting a defender we could of got 6 or 7 last night. I can't fault him for positioning or work rate but his general footballing abilities (i.e. passing, shooting, crossing, first touch etc) are not great. He would be a good squad player if we had the budget, but KOC is better and Reeves has the potetial to be a lot better than him, then you also have Oyeleke who is clearly rated by the coaching staff. Them 3 plus Douglas and Toumani is more that enough competition. Id rather see Bean's wages invested elsewhere in the squad.

I think you are confusing Bean with Donaldson.

Excellent performance by Bean against Carlisle, especially in the first quarter of the game when he was the only person in our midfield shutting down the opposition - and actually finding his team mates with passes (despite his often-stated perceived limitations in this skill)

He is a proven, vital part of this team and must be offered a contract for next year. Reeves, Odelaki etc may turn out to be better ball-players, but currently lack the physical presence required in the centre of midfied - something that Bean definitely provides.

I sincerely hope that the lack of a contract for Bean for next year is just a delaying tactic to keep him mean rather than a fait accompli.

The Marcus Bean thread

He's currently in the side deservedly on merit.

Having said that pre season most of us were expecting him to struggle to make the subs bench due to the 5 subs rule and Douglas, Dave and KOC being ahead of him seemingly in the pecking order.

Would suggest he's done enough to warrant a new deal but at the same time he's not getting any younger and if we can sign someone to do a similar job but better we should do.

Also we have Reeves to call on if back up is needed.

So long as we can replace the midfield bite that he gives the side then It'll be a case of fair play and genuine feelings of good luck in his future. If we can't sign an improvement of similar style then a one year deal would be welcomed.

Forshaw will fit in nicely if Bean is out for a while.

not a good time for Beano to get a bad injury although on twitter he does not seem too down....

We are lucky then, the that we have a more than capable LOANEE here to take his place   That is assuming most of us ( including you ) want the potential to grab the 6th spot this season ;)

Very poor.
Most of the time our players were being pushed, held and ending up on the deck and Scunny got the foul!

And which of them play in the same way asBean, ie a box to box, ball winning midfielder? It's all about having a blend.

None. The 4 you mentioned are all offensive players who have barely made a tackle all season.

I shouldn't have wasted my time replying to you as you have your own opinion and maybe agenda and won't ever be swayed by others.

It's just so bloody frustrating when the same people spout the same things (you could insert a different word here) time after time after time, relentlessly without ever being prepared to modify or consider other views.

There is a word for people like that and it does my head in having to read their posts as nothing will ever get them to change their default and preconceived opinions.

Maybe they are very obstinate or just want to get a rise or response from others on the board?
