I thought the rider was English but she franchised to GermanyThe H said:Goddard would have got a bronze.... we've got our hands full stopping the cheating Germans from winning the horsey Gold at the moment.....
Anyone watching the semi-final of the mens individual table tennis would immediately understand why Britain often disappoints. Here the veteran Swede was fervently supported by the King and Queen of Sweden, with the Queen waving a national flag after every point won.Now it's obvious that if our Queen, aided by Prince Philip, led the fan base with Union flags and maybe leading the singing,we would do so much better.Dangerous said:sh*te from the brits yet again. 100 th post![]()

Debbee said:Agreed! After a slow start things are really picking up for us and if we get a decision in our favour later on today re the Eventing farse we could add another gold to our tally.![]()
Btw, I did get up to see Redgraves 5th 4 years ago, infact I think I watched all of his wins, although don't really remember the first very well 'cause I was only 8 @ the time. We've got a chance of another gold in the rowing tomorrow with the women scullers so I suggest you get up early to watch that too!![]()
It's so entralling, I doubt I'll be doing much else than watching our athletes this weekend.![]()

Boston Bee said:I was saying for weeks that the pressure that the English media had put on her was absolutely rediculous. So much can happen over 26 miles, especially in the heat of Athens. The media more or less sold us on the Olympics with the thought: we're not great at too many things...but stay tuned and Paula will win the marathon!
Too much insane pressure
I really feel for PR, she so desperately, desperately wanted to win for Great Britain. You could see how much she felt like she let everyone down.
Debbee said:I hope she comes back and may be tries again in China in 4 years time 'cause if anyone deserves an Olympic medal it's her.
34 is no age for a marathon runner but to suggest that she tries the 10K on Friday is ridiculous as at least 8 other runners in the line up have beaten Paula over this distance in the past.Boston Bee said:She'll be 34 when China rolls around. Think this is it for her. Do very much hope that she gives the 10k a try on Friday as it would be such a shame if she ended up without anything to show for her Olympic dreams.

Paul O'Brien said:I wanted Paula to win. Unfortunately, I'm also a cynic. By dropping out and explaining how bad the conditions were (which were, after all, the same for all the runners) she's able to retain the awe and affection of the British public far more than if she had finished fourth.
Quite remarkable.

Yes the Japanese girl was brilliant but Paula's still the world record holder and therefore the best in the world IMHO.finchbee said:I can only think that she had not prepared well enough !!
The Japanese girl ran brilliantly
Boston Bee said:I swear, it's like somehow Radcliffe personally let down the beeb! Already today I've heard the news reader on Radio 1 and on 5Live say that this afternoon she'll give a press conference to "explain" what happened - like she's some bad schoolgirl. Also liked the early morning stories where the script described how she "stopped and sobbed at the roadside". Made her sound like a weak little girl.
So does the BBC dislike Paula or just think little of woman athletes?
West Wilts Bee said:The beeb let us down , by having a pratt such as Sue Barker, as one of their main broadcasters, what a joke . Talk about jobs for the boys(or girls) She is one of lifes losers. Back to the point, Paula Radcliffe has let nobody down. Thank god we have had her over the years, because our athletes are not up to standard. Our swimmers were a joke with the exception of a few.
I was watching one of our girls being interviewed after finishing 7th in a heat.
Her excuse was " I hit my knee on the table after having Sunday lunch, So I was just pleased to have the swim and experience the Olympics" With attitude like that it's no wonder we are where we are. I watched the the Womans 400 metres qualifiers yesterday.and frankly we were not up to scratch. The class that we had, are sadly now to old.
Paula Radcliffe has been class over the years, she has been a credit to our country. I dont blame her for knocking it on the head. She wanted gold, she may have settled for a bronze. She had nothing left, I have ran a marathon, you have to be right. We are one of the richest nations, but we have never given our athletes the facilities that they need to compete.Look at the Aussies , it's all down to grass routes. We dont let our school kids compete against eash other, for fear of upsetting Mums & Dads. This will to win needs to be installed at an early age. We are a sporting nation, but sadly we are light years behind the top sporting nations.
West Wilts Bee said:Look at the Aussies , it's all down to grass routes.
I agree GABS, it is an advantage. See Bostons post about school playing fields. sad, but true. To be a winner you have to have heart. The likes of backley, Christie Coe Cramb Ovett, they had the heart. We need to be a nation of winners, not a nation that is just happy to take part.GABS said:Even the Aussies admit their success (relative to the UK) is mainly to do with having the weather for kids to takeup and practice outdoor activities much, much more than we do in this country with its crappy weather.
Anyhow, they have never won the main athletics event, the mens 100m![]()
